COURSE DESCRIPTION
Second semester, students will focus on multiple concepts of Earth Science, including studies in the areas of natural
resources, conservation, oceanography, and meteorology. We will continue to develop good characteristics of science,
processing skills, understanding and applying the nature of science, and reading in the content area.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
The following academic concepts will be covered. THIS IS ONLY A GUIDE AND IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
Unit 3 – Let’s Get Physical: Physical Processes of the Earth. Chapter 10 sections 1, 3 & 4.
Standards:
S6E5. Obtain, evaluate and communicate information about how Earth’s surfaces are formed.
d. Ask questions to identify types of weathering, agents of erosion and transportation, and environments of deposition.
h. Develop a model to demonstrate how natural processes (weathering, erosion, and deposition) and human activity change
rocks and the surface of the Earth
Unit 4 –Water, Water Everywhere: Earth Processes & Hydrology, Natural Resources/Conservation &
Impact. Chapters 5, sections 1-3; 11 sections 1; 13 sections 1-3; 14, section 1-4.
Standards:
S6E3. Obtain, evaluate and communicate information to recognize the significant role of water in Earth processes.
a. Ask questions to determine where water is located on Earth’s surface (oceans, rivers, lakes, swamps, groundwater,
aquifers, and ice) and communicate the relative proportion of water at each location.
b. Plan and carry out an investigation to illustrate the role of the sun’s energy in atmospheric conditions that lead to the
cycling of water.
S6E6. Obtain, evaluate and communicate information about the uses and conservation of various natural resources and
how they impact the Earth.
a. Ask questions to determine the differences between renewable/sustainable energy resources (examples: hydro, solar,
wind, geothermal, tidal, biomass) and nonrenewable energy resources (examples: nuclear: uranium, fossil fuels: oil, coal,
and natural gas), and how they are used in our everyday lives.
b. Design and evaluate solutions for sustaining the quality and supply of natural resources such as water, soil, and air.
Unit 5- Weather Me This: Weather & Climate. Chapter 15 sections 1-3; 16 sections 2-4, 17 Sect. 1-3
Standards:
S6E4. O btain, evaluate and communicate information about how the sun, land and water affect climate and weather.
a. Analyze and interpret data to compare and contrast the composition of Earth’s atmospheric layers (including the ozone
layer) and greenhouse gases.
d. Construct an explanation of the relationship between air pressure, weather fronts and air masses and meteorological
events such as hurricanes.
*Pacing in accordance with the curriculum as set by the DCSD Earth Science curriculum.
*Remediation may occur and will vary dependent on the time allowed and each individual students’ progression.
*Parts of chapters may be excluded due to their correlation to the standards.

GRADING SYSTEM
The DeKalb County School District believes that the most important assessment of student learning shall be conducted by
the teachers as they observe and evaluate students in the context of ongoing classroom instruction. A variety of approaches,
methodologies, and resources shall be used to deliver educational services and to maximize each student’s opportunity to
succeed. Teachers shall evaluate student progress, report grades that represent the student’s academic achievement, and
communicate official academic progress to students and parents in a timely manner through the electronic grading portal.
See Board Policy IHA.

CLASSROOM Tardy policy- Students are to be in class on time with all required materials every day. The school
EXPECTATIONS tardy policy will be enforced.
Homework- Homework is expected to be completed as assigned. Homework will be assigned
frequently. Some homework assignments may be found on the website or via edmodo.
Late work- It is the policy of the DeKalb County School System that students will receive a grade of
zero for any missing assignments, until student work is completed. Student work must be
completed within time allowed by their teacher. The following details how late work will be scored,
according to the day/date received and depending on accuracy:
ONE day late will have a maximum value of 90%
TWO days late will have a maximum value of 80%
THREE days late the maximum value will be 70%
Missing work will receive a zero. It is important to note after three days, for any late work received
a failing grade will be earned as noted above. Work will NOT be accepted more than three days
after the assigned due date, unless, it is accompanied by an “excused” slip issued by the attendance
office.
Make-up work- Announced work, such as homework, quizzes and major assessments are due the
day the student returns. For each day’s excused absence, students will have ONE day to make-up
missed work. If a student is absent under extenuating circumstances, special arrangements can be
made to make up work. IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO CHECK THE CALENDAR
AND/OR REQUEST MISSED WORK.
Academic honesty- Receiving or giving information for an assignment is cheating and when caught
in the act students will not receive credit nor receive the opportunity for a chance of make-up.
Plagiarism is not acceptable. I f a student takes information from the internet or any printed
resources without a citation, it is considered plagiarism and will result in a reduction in grade.
Papers turned in without a name will be discarded. In some cases, students will be allowed to
“redo” the assignment, which will result in a late grade.
Extra Credit work- Students must complete all assigned work before extra credit work is assigned
and can be submitted.
Lab work-Students who fail to follow lab safety protocols will be removed from the current lab and
possible future labs depending on the offense and given an alternative assignment to be completed
and graded.
Students must adhere to the DCSS Student Code of Conduct, as well as specific class rules
established and reviewed by each teacher individually.
Additional team rules can be found via my website.
MATERIALS AND Students are expected to bring their own: paper, science composition book, a working pen or
SUPPLIES pencil, coloring tool, personal pencil sharpener, and glue stick to class every day. They should NOT
have to borrow supplies.
EXTRA HELP Safety nets may include but are not limited to: Academic Lunch, special projects, teacher tutorials,
and technology based projects, research and other extended learning opportunities.
PARENTS Please check my website weekly for important dates (quizzes & tests), required projects and other
AS PARTNERS special assignments, along with helpful websites and other resources.
Check the agenda daily. Work should be written in it or it should say “none” if they have no
homework. Sign up for the parent portal in Infinite Campus to monitor grades.
If you are concerned about your student’s progress please email me A.S.A.P.
