Telling a Stellar Story

The Opheim Community Church Sunday School
children put on the “Story of Jesus’s Birth” on Sunday
December 16. The story was narrated by Sunday
School teacher Lori Westby. Following the story the
children sang Silent Night. After the church service
the Northern Lites 4-H Club served a roast beef dinner
then games were played in the afternoon. Pictured

The Opheim School Christmas program is tonight
(December 18th) at 6:00 at the Opheim Community
Church. All students in grades K-12 will be
performing. Come enjoy the elementary performance
of “The Night the Reindeer Rocked” and musical
performances by the 5th grade band, Jr. High and
high school band and choir. Refreshments will be
served following the program!

Letter to the Buzz
Cream & butter is Peggy’s secret
I stopped into the Buzz with Ruth Myhre and
Sandi McGovern last Friday to find out from a
November issue where the tombstone was located that
had “Mom’s Christmas Cookie” recipe on the back.
Her kids must have had a sense of humor as she
never shared the recipe when she was alive, saying
when asked, “over my dead body”.
I shared the recipe at the Home Economists in
Business Christmas party at Juliano’s, and Bernie
Mason, Yellowstone County Extension Agent, put it in
the Billings Gazette.
These rolled out like a dream for me, but she tried
them as a drop cookie and they needed more flour.
I did make them with butter. My son Matt Iba asked
what oleo was. It was invented during WWII cuz there
wasn’t enough butter to go around. (I did a speech in
Toastmasters years ago on the difference between butter
and margarine and converted everyone to butter!)
The cookies rolled out so nice. You can add lots of
flour till not sticky. Bake 8-10 minutes at 350.
It looks like I will be making another batch of
cookies for the BS Buzz crew for embellishing on an
innocent stop to locate this tombstone.

Note from the Buzz:
We believe we have tracked down where the
gravestone with the cookie recipe is located.
Family members of a northeast Iowa woman
wanted a special way to remember her after she died,
so they chose a way that seemed most fitting: with a
family recipe for sugar cookies.
The recipe for “Mom’s Christmas Cookies” is
inscribed on the back of Maxine Menster’s gravestone
at a cemetery in Cascade, Iowa.
Her daughter, Jane Menster of rural Bernard,
says she and her father were searching for a way to
remember their mother’s generosity. She says the sugar
cookie recipe serves as a reminder of her mother’s love,
and an enduring holiday tradition for their family.
Maxine died on Sept. 26, 1994 at the age of 68.
On an added note about oleo: we had a great teacher
(Problems of Democracy) at the Glasgow High School,
Bunny Radakovich, who told the story of when they were
kids, they would fight over who got to put the yellow
tablet in the white gob of goo and stir and mix it in until
the oleo was yellow to imitate the color of butter.

recent community bazaar.
Alexa Shipp, a junior at MSU-Billings seeking a bachelor’s
degree in elementary education, was awarded $1000. Having
already served as a substitute teacher in the Glasgow Public
Schools, she has had a “glimpse” into becoming a teacher and
is “looking forward to making an impact on many children
and helping them accomplish their dreams.”
Nicole Williams, Nashua, on the President’s List at the
University of Montana, Missoula, is a sophomore nursing
student. She has been vital to the Hugh O’Brian Youth
Leadership Organization ever since having been a HOBY
delegate as a high school sophomore. She would like to
“ultimately return to NE Montana and work at FMDH...to
give back and serve the caring and supportive community
I grew up in.” She received $500 from the local group. GET UGLY
