Proverb English Translation

அக தி அழ க தி ெத The beauty of the soul is known in the face
அ கமா டாதவ இ ப ேல He who is unable to reap, carries fifty-eight sickles at
ஐ ப ெத (58) அ வா his side

அக ைகய ேபா ற ைகைய Having placed the thing on the palm, why lick the back
ந கலாமா ? of the hand?

ஆ க ெபா தவ , ஆற Will not be who has waited till the food is cooked, also
ெபா கமா டானா? wait till it cools?

ஆழ ெத யாம காைல
Like stepping into the water without knowing its depth
இ ெகா ட ேபால

ஆழா அ சி, ழா பாைன, The Mudaliyar has only a small measure of rice, but
keeps a pot that can hold three such measures. Behold
தலியா வ கிற வறா ப பா the pomp of the Mudaliyar!
ஆ றிேல ேபா டா அழ ேபாட Although you are throwing it into the river, measure it
ேவ first

ஏ ர கா கறி ஆ மா? Will the word pumpkin serve for a meal?

தி ெக டா மி ைல, வா தி No man was ever ruined by being cursed, and no one

வா தா மி ைல ever prospered because he was blessed

அைச தி கிற மா , அைசயாம

A cow eats moving, a house eats standing
தி கிற வ

அகல இ தா நிகள உற , If separated by a long distance, there will be long-lived

friendship, but if they are near each other, there will be
கி டவ தா ட பைக perfect hatred
அ கா கா ைய பாட ெசா னா , If a song be demanded of a woman going along with
her market basket, she will exclaim Onions, Curry
ெவ காய கறிேவ ப ைல எ பா leaves
அ இ பா ,இ இ பா , He is there, he is here, he has share also in the boiled
ஆ கின ேசா ப இ பா rice

பா ச ைன காவ
Asking a cat to guard the pot of milk
ைவ கிற ேபா

எ கிற வ ேல ப கிற லாப Whatever you are able to secure from a burning house
is a gain
க ட ைன அ ப கைரய The cat that has got fire burns will never go near the
ேசரா kitchen

சீைல இ ைல எ சி தி வ
She went to her aunt’s house since she had no saree,
ேபானாளா , அவ ஈ ச பாைய but her aunt came out wearing a rug made of date
க ெகா எதிேர வ தாளா palm

மதி ேம ைன ேபால Like a cat standing on the wall

ஆ நைனகிற எ ஓநா
Its like wolf cried when the sheep got drenched in rain
அ கிறதா

த ண ெவ ந ஆனா ெந ைப Even if the water becomes hot water, it will quench the
அைண fire

அறிேவ ஆ ற Knowledge is power

ஆட ெத யாதவ ட ேகாண She who do not know to dance says the stage is

தா கிழ ேக பா தா , லி கார The all-night dancer watched the east, the all-day

காமா நாயக you are away they would ridicule you as a fool

ஏற ெசா னா எ ேகாப , The bull gets angry when a physically challenged man
is asked to mount on it; if the man is asked to get
இற க ெசா னா ெநா ேகாப down, he would get angry
எ ைம வா ெந வ ைல
Can you ask price for your ghee before buying buffalo?
கிறதா ?

ஊ எ லா வா கிற எ வ Would it matter if you cry rolling all over your house
எ லா அ ர டா வ மா ? that the village is prospering?

திைர டானா , ெகா

Would the blind horse eat lesser fodder?
தி கிறதி ைறய ?
ப ன எ ப கிற மி ைல, Neither does he expand in March nor does he get lean
சி திைர எ சி கி மி ைல in April

அ உ டானா , If the five(pepper, salt, mustard, cumin, tamarind) and

the three(water, fire, fuel) are at hand, even an ignorant
அறியா ெப சைம girl can cook
இ அ கிற இட தில நா எ ன
