Module:1, 2 & 3
1. A machine member 50mm diameter and 250mm long is supported at one end as a
cantilever. A transverse point load of 2650N is acting downward at the free end of the
member together with a torque of 240 Nm. Find the maximum principal stress, minimum
principal stress and maximum shear stress at the most critical section of the member.
2. A machine member 100mm diameter and 300mm long can be treated as a cantilever for
stress analysis. The member is estimated to be subjected to a combination of the
following loads (i) a axial tensile load of 20kN (ii) a transverse point load of 6kN at the
free end (iii) a torque of 5kNm at the free end. Determine the combined stresses at the
most critical sections.
3. A solid circular shaft 15mm diameter is subjected to fluctuating stress that varies from
− 15 𝑁/𝑚𝑚2 to + 30 𝑁/𝑚𝑚2 . The shaft is made of steel of FeE400 where
𝜎𝑢𝑡 = 540 𝑀𝑃𝑎 and 𝜎𝑦 =400 MPa. The corrected endurance limit of the shaft is
200 MPa. Find factor of safety using (i) Gerber line (ii) Soderberg line (iii) Goodman
line.
5. A rod of circular cross section is subjected to an alternating tensile force, varying from
20kN to 70kN. Determine the diameter of the rod according to (i) Gerber method (ii)
Goodman method (iii) Soderberg method; using the following material properties:
Ultimate tensile strength = 1000 MPa, Yield Strength= 550MPa.
6. A cantilever rod of circular section is subjected to a cyclic transverse load; varying from
− 100 𝑁 to +300N as shown in figure below. Determine the diameter of the rod by (i)
Goodman method (ii) Soderberg method using the following: factor of safety is 2,
theoretical stress concentration factor = 1.4, Notch sensitivity factor =0.9, Ultimate
Strength = 550 MPa, Yield strength = 320 MPa, Endurance limit = 275 MPa, Size
correction factor = 0.85, Surface correction factor = 0.9.
7. The following are the material properties of a connecting link made of mild steel of
𝜎𝑢𝑡 = 600 𝑀𝑃𝑎 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜎𝑦 =350 MPa and 𝜎𝑒 =200 MPa. Find factor of safety for the
following stresses
8. A simply supported shaft 50mm diameter and 0.6m long is subjected to load at its
mid-section, a load that varies cylindrically from 2P to 4P. Determine the value of P from
the following: yield strength is 400MPa, endurance limit is 350 MPa, factor of safety is 2,
Size correction factor = 0.85, Surface correction factor = 0.9.
10. A machine component is subjected to a reversed bending stress of 650 MPa for 10% of
the time, 500MPa for 25% of the time and a reversed bending stress of 400MPa for 65%
of the time. Determine the expected life of the part. The endurance strength of the
component material for various stress levels are as follows 700 MPa for 10,000 cycles,
360MPa for 40000 cycles and 450 MPa for 200000 cycles.
