Social work defined as an academic discipline and profession that concerns itself with individuals,
families, groups and communities in an effort to enhance social functioning and overall well-being.

It is also defined as practice based profession and academic discipline that promotes social change and
development, social cohesion, and empowerment and liberation of people. ( https// en.m.
Wikipedia.org/wiki/social work.)

Social worker profession plays an important role in society in helping individuals, groups and even
communities to enhance and improve their well-being. In my work I am going to discuss how social work
is very important in our country (Rwanda).

First, in Rwanda there are many institutions in which the social workers are needed such as in family,
education, in health, finance assistance, and recreational centers, many social workers are collaborating
with institutions and organizations to deliver social and health services.

Second, social work participate in solving problems of people, as we know in our country we have many
problems, due to the genocide against Tutsi in 1994, we have many orphans, widows, the poverty has
been increased, and other many problems related to the genocide, so that social work is very crucial to do
advocate for those vulnerable people.

A professional social worker, play a role in linking people with other agencies that they will meet their
needs, in Rwanda there is program of associations and cooperatives so social work is needed to mobilize
and coordinate the people to go in associations for better to improve their well being, and social work will
play a role of advocacy that the people will meet with bank agencies that they can get the loans for their
development.

Social worker is an educator, for that in our country social worker will participate in many institutions to
lift up the knowledge and skills of people.
