In many culture squatting is the usual position for defecation and urination for
females. For males squatting is the usual position during defecation and standing is the
custom for voiding. For the client confined to bes, it is impossible to assume the customary
position and the upright position needs to be facilitated to the extent possible. Adult may
resist using a bedpan or urinal because of the emphasis on privacy. Children may find the

Most people have been culturally indoctrinated to believe elimination be a very

private activity. The sight, sounds, and odors associated with elimination may be
embarrassing, which may prompt the patient to decrease fluid intake to minimize the need to
void or to ignore the urge to defecate fo as long as possible.
