Recalling the Magical Christmases of the Past

thought the tree was beau-
tiful the way it was.”
During the holi-
day season the stores
would be stocked with
oranges, apples, nuts and
candy. At the back of the

thing,” said Grace. “We
only had a few toys but oh
did we love those toys.”
Santa Claus al-
ways brought the presents

family Christmas tree. “We
didn’t get presents from
our parents, we got pres-
ents from Santa,” recalls
Grace. “It was absolutely
magical! We’d wake up
in the morning and there
would it would be. Abso-
lute magic.”
On Christmas
Eve, Grace’s family would
set off to her Grandma’s
house in Esterhazy, which
was about 12 kilometres
southwest of Yarbo. There
would always be a big meal
including turkey and duck,
potatoes, vegetables and
town for midnight mass at
the Catholic Church and
for miles they could hear
bells coming from all of
the other family’s sleighs.
“I can still picture it,”
smiled Grace. “The air was
crisp and cool on my face
and the jingling sound of
the bells made my whole
night. That was a true
Christmas!”
At the Christmas
concerts every year, Grace
made sure to ask Santa for
the T. Eaton doll and when
she was six, her wish came
true and she received her
favourite gift under the
tree. “The T. Eaton doll was
something I always want-
ed. It was the most beauti-
ful doll I’d ever seen!” ex-
claimed Grace.
Most children
will wake up early Christ-
mas morning and sneak
out to peak at what Santa
then on!”
As Grace reflects
back on the simple, but
magical Christmases of
her childhood, she longs
for some of those older
ways to return to society
today. “I miss those sim-
pler times, when neigh-
bours were true and ev-
eryone helped everyone,”
said Grace. “Nowadays,
people can walk right by
you without ever speaking.
I miss those olden days
sometimes. People need
to learn to slow down and
see people more. We need
the true spirit of Christmas
back!”
That is a valuable
lesson each and every
one of us can learn from.
As Christmas approaches,
let’s all remember its true
meaning and what the hol-
iday season is truly about.

W ith a smile on her
face and a gleam in
her eyes, Grace Bullock re-
members what it was like
for her at Christmas time
when she was a just a little
girl.
Originally from
Yarbo, SK, Grace grew up
with her mom and younger
brother on the family farm.
Grace has led a very excit-
‘Merry Christmas’ to
everyone they saw
and everyone was
happy,” recalls Grace.
“People nowadays go
too fast, they are always
buzzing here and zooming
there. The word “neigh-
bours” don’t mean what it
used to, and that is really
quite sad.”
Christmas trees of
the kids would be, was a
small selection of toys. Par-
ents could go to the back
room of the store and buy
a toy and the kids would

day was usually spent play-
ing outside in the snow as
kids. We’d come in and
eat but mostly we’d be
outside,” Grace fondly re-

That evening, the

recalls. “She told me that if

It was finally Christmastime, the best time of the year. The
houses were strung with tiny coloured lights, their windows shin-
ing with warm yellow glow only Christmas could bring. The scents
of pine needles and hot cocoa mingled together, wafting through
the air, and the sweet sounds of Christmas could be heard in the
distance. Fluffy white snowflakes tumbled from the sky onto a
group of joyful children as they sang and laughed, skating on the
frozen pond in town. Everyone was happy and full of holiday cheer.
That is, everyone except for Charlie Brown.
“Linus, I think there must be something wrong with me. I just
don’t understand Christmas, I guess. I might be getting presents
and sending Christmas cards and decorating trees and all that,
but I’m still not happy. I don’t feel the way I’m supposed to feel. “
“Charlie Brown, you are the only person I know who can take a
wonderful season like Christmas and turn it into a problem. Maybe
Lucy is right. Of all of the Charlie Browns in the world, you are the
Charlie Browniest“ replied Linus.
“Rats! Nobody sent me a Christmas card today.
I know nobody likes me. Why do we have to have a
holiday season to emphasize it? “
“Thanks for the Christmas card you sent me Violet.”
“I didn’t send you a Christmas card!”
“Don’t you know sarcasm when you hear it?” Charlie asked.
Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves,
but Charlie Brown was still sad.
“I think you have a customer.” said Schoder to Lucy.
“May I help you?” asked Lucy.
“ I am in sad shape…” said Charlie.
“Hold up there Charlie Brown! I need
5 cents from you for my kind of advice!”
Charlie reaches in his pocket and drops a nickel in Lucy’s money
can. Lucy shakes the can near her face on each side of her cheek
and smiles.
“Boy, oh Boy, I love the beautiful sound of cold, hard, cash.
That beautiful, beautiful sound. Nickels, nickels, nickels.
That beautiful sound of plunking nickels. Alright, now what
seems to be your trouble?” asked Lucy.
I feel depressed. I know I should be happy, but I’m not.
“Well, as they say on TV, “the mere fact that you realize you
need help indicates that you are not too far gone. I think we
better pinpoint your fears. If we can find out what you’re afraid
of, we can label it. Are you afraid of responsibility? If you are,
then you have hypengyophobia. How ‘bout cats? If you’re afraid
of cats, you have ailurophasia. Are you afraid of staircases?
If you are, then you have climachaphobia. Maybe you have
thalassophobia. This is a fear of the ocean. Or gephyrobia,
which is the fear of crossing bridges. Or maybe you have
pantophobia. Do you think you have pantophobia?”
“What’s pantophobia?: asked Charlie.
“The fear of everything.”
“That’s it!” yelled Charlie.
“Actually Lucy, my trouble is Christmas. I just don’t understand
it. Instead of feeling happy, I feel sort of let down.”
“You need involvement. You need to get involved in some real
Christmas project. How would you like to be the director of our
Christmas play?” asked Lucy.
“Me? You want me to be the director of the Christmas play?”
“Sure Charlie Brown, we need a director. You need involvement.
We’ve got a Shepherd, musicians, animals, everyone we need. We’ve
even got a Christmas Queen!” said Lucy pointing to herself.
Charlie rolls his eyes in disgust. “I don’t know anything about
directing a Christmas play.”
“Don’t worry; I’ll be there to help you. I’ll meet you at the
auditorium. Incidentally, I know how you feel about all this
Christmas business, getting depressed and all that.
It happens to me every year. I never get what I really want.
I always get a lot of silly toys, or a bicycle, or clothes,
or something like that.” said Lucy.
“What is it you want?” asked Charlie.
“Real Estate.”

Snoopy grins and hands Charlie a flyer.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS AND DISPLAY CONTEST.
Charlie looks up towards the sky with dismay.
Even his very own dog had gone commercial. The thought of the
contest made Charlie Brown feel positively sick. Was money all
anyone cared about? Charlie Brown couldn’t stand it.
Charlie throws the flyer in the air and walks away.
“I’ve been looking for you, big brother. Will you please write a
letter to Santa Claus for me? You write it, and I’ll tell you
what I want to say.” said Sally.
Charlie was in a hurry to get to the school auditorium on time for
play rehearsal, but he couldn’t say no to his sister.
Charlie takes the pen and clipboard from Sally.
“Okay, shoot.”
Sally began “I have been extra good this year, so I have a long
list of presents that I want.”
Charlie sighs “Oh, brother.”
“Please note the size and color of each item, and send as many as
possible. If it seems too complicated, make it easy on yourself:
just send money. How ‘bout tens and twenties?”
“Tens and Twenties. Oh, even my baby sister!”
“All I want is what I have coming to me.
All I want is my fair share.” said Sally.
“Our director will be here any minute and we’ll start
rehearsal. Here he comes.” stated Lucy.
“Man’s best friend.” Charlie shreugged. “We’re going to do this
play, and we’re going to do it right!”
“Alright, I’m here to assign roles. Frieda, you’re playing the
innkeeper’s wife.” said Lucy
“Do inn keepers wife’s have naturally curly hair?” asked Frieda
“Pig Pen, you’re the innkeeper.”
“In spite of my outward appearance,
I shall try to run a neat inn” replied Pig Pen.
“And Shermy, you’re the Shepherd.”
“Every Christmas is the same. I always end up
playing the shepherd.“
Snoopy was delighted to play the roles of all the different
animals. From sheep, to cow, to penguin
“Linus, memorize these lines,
so you can recite them on cue.” said Lucy.
“This is ridiculous! I can’t memorize something like this so quickly!
Why should I be put through such agony? Give me one good reason
why I should have to memorize this!” said Linus.
“I’ll give you five good reasons: One, two, three, four, five!”
“Those are good reasons. Christmas is
not only getting too commercial, it’s
getting too dangerous.”
“And get rid of that ridiculous blanket!
What’s a Christmas Shepherd going to
look like holding a silly blanket like that?”
“Alright! Lets have it quiet! Places
everybody.” shouted Charlie.
“Cut! Cut! It’s all wrong! Lets rehearse
another scene instead.”
“Pig Pen’s dust is ruining the style
of my naturally
curly hair!” complained Frieda.
Sally watched Linus intently and
rested her head on his shoulder briefly.
“Isn’t he the cutest thing?” Sally asks.
“We want a lunch break!” demnded Lucy
Good grief… There’s no
time for foolishness.

Lets take it from the top again!” said Charlie.
“Charlie, What’s the matter? Don’t you
think it’s great? “ asked Lucy
Charlie shakes his head.
“Look, let’s face it. We all know that Christmas is a big
commercial racket. It’s ruined by a big eastern syndicate,
ya know” said Lucy.
“Well, this is one play that’s not going to be commercial. What
our play needs is the proper Christmas mood. We need a
Christmas tree.” said Charlie.
“Hey, perhaps a tree. A great big shiny aluminum Christmas
tree! That’s it! Get the biggest aluminum tree you can find.
Maybe paint it pink!” said Lucy.
Charlie Brown left Lucy in charge of rehearsal, and set out with
Linus to find the perfect tree for their play.
“Gee, do they still make wooden Christmas trees?” asked Linus.
“This one seems to need a home.” said Charlie.
“I don’t know, remember what Lucy said? This doesn’t seem to fit
the modern spirit.” stated Linus.
“I don’t care! We’ll decorate it, and it will be just right for our play.
Besides, I think it needs me.” said Charlie.
Charlie places the sparse tree on the piano
“We’re back!” said Charlie.
“Boy, are you a blockhead Charlie Brown. You were supposed to
get a good tree. Can’t you even tell a good tree from a poor tree?”
asked Violet.
“You’re hopeless Charlie Brown.” sighs Patti.
“You’ve been dumb before, but this time you really did it.” said
Lucy.
“I guess you were right Linus; I shouldn’t have picked this little
tree. Everything I do turns into a disaster. I guess I don’t
really know what Christmas is about. Isn’t there anyone who
understands what Christmas is all about?” says Charlie.
“Sure, I can tell you what Christmas is all about. And there were
in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch
over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon
them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them, and
they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, ‘fear not, for
behold, I bring you tidings of great joy which will be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a savior, which is
Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you. Ye shall find the
babe wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in the manger.’ And
suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly
host, praising God and saying, ‘glory to God in the
highest, and on Earth peace, good will toward men. That’s what
Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.”
Charlie picks up the tree off the piano and smiles.
“Linus is right; I won’t let all this commercialism ruin my
Christmas. I’ll take this little tree home, and I’ll decorate it,
and I’ll show them it really will work in our play.” said Charlie.
Charlie walked to Snoopy’s doghouse holding the tree. He took the
red ornament off of Snoopy’s house and put it on the tree. He set
the tree on the ground. The tree bends and falls over.
“I killed it! Everything I touch gets ruined!”
“I never thought it was such a bad little tree. It’s not bad at all,
really. Maybe it just needs a little love.” said Linus.
“Charlie Brown is a blockhead, but he did get a nice tree.” said Lucy.
“What’s going on here?” asked Charlie.
Merry Christmas Charlie Brown!
Surrounded by his friends, Charlie Brown realized Linus had been
right about the true meaning of Christmas. This was the
Christmas spirit he had been looking for all along. At last, the
season seemed 100 times brighter. And for Charlie Brown,
it was truly the merriest Christmas ever.

happy frenzy of the day it-
self and that sweet spot af-
terwards, when children’s
gifts are still new and inter-

But most kids get
two weeks off school. It’s
easy to default to Netflix or
videogames, but these can
leave everyone climbing
the walls after awhile.

Honey Glazed Ham Scalloped Cheese Potatoes

Ingredients Ingredients
1 (5 pound) ready-to-eat ham 4 pounds potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
1/4 cup whole cloves 2 (10.75 ounce) cans condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
1/4 cup dark corn syrup 1/4 cup butter or margarine, divided
2 cups honey 2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese, divided

Directions 1. In a large bowl, combine potatoes and soup. Layer half of the mixture in a

1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle Mountain Dew (TM) 2. Bake at 350° for 10 minutes or to desired degree of tenderness. Transfer asparagus
Directions to a serving dish; sprinkle with almonds.
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
2. Cut each apple into 8 wedges and set aside. Separate the crescent roll dough into
triangles. Roll each apple wedge in crescent roll dough starting at the smallest end.
Pinch to seal and place in the baking dish.
3. Melt butter in a small saucepan and stir in the sugar and cinnamon. Pour over the
apple dumplings. Pour Mountain Dew(TM) over the dumplings.
4. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden brown

Homemade Eggnog
Ingredients
4 large eggs, separated
1/3 cup sugar + 1 tablespoon
2 cups milk
1 cup heavy cream
3 ounces bourbon
1 teaspoon fresh grated nutmeg
Instructions
1. Place egg whites into a mixer bowl and whip on high until
they form soft peaks, adding one tablespoon sugar until they
are stiff peaks. Set aside.
2. Place egg yolks into a mixer bowl and mix on medium high
speed until they are thick and creamy. With the machine
running, gradually add the remaining sugar and beat until it
is dissolved, about 1 minute.
3. Add the milk, cream and optional bourbon, stirring until
combined. Stir in the nutmeg.
4. Fold the two mixtures together and chill well before serving
or using.

Minnedosa Christmas Shopping 40 Years Ago

H ello again, Minnedosa
Christmas shoppers.
It’s that time of the year
once again when we travel
back in time to check out
what the Minnedosa busi-
ness district had to offer
in years past. This year, we
are travelling back to 1978,
the year Ye Old Editor was
born.
Let’s get out our
Christmas shopping list
and start with that much
needed staple – our Christ-
mas dinner. We have three
grocery stores to patron-
ize – Minnedosa Consum-
ers Co-op, Boyd’s IGA and
J.A. Burgess and Sons Solo
Store. Let’s start at the Bur-
gess store as it is one of
Minnedosa’s oldest busi-
nesses. Advertised specials
in their “Pre-Christmas
Sale of Foods” include
turkeys at $1,29 a pound,
12 ounce cranberry sauce
for 59 cents, Ritz crackers
for 69 cents and Jello jelly
powder at four for one dol-
lar. Now, let’s hop across
to the west side of Main
Street for some “Festive
Food Specials” at the IGA.
Here, we can pick up one
pound of Blue Ribbon cof-
fee for $2.89, bacon $1.49 a
pound, tomatoes 39 cents
a pound or a box of Low-
ney’s chocolates for $2.99.
The rest of the items on
our list can be picked up at
the Co-op Shopping Cen-
tre where there is a “Santa
Savings” sale underway.
Let’s get ten one ounce
packets of hot chocolate
mix for 95 cents as well as
a jar of olives at 99 cents,
canned mushrooms – two
for 99 cents and canned
apple sauce at three for 99
cents.
While on the topic
of food, remember that The
Voyageur Restaurant, with
the big red pointed hat on
its roof, is having a Boxing
Day Special so that you
don’t have to do any cook-
ing the day after Christ-
mas. Their menus includes
your choice of stuffed roast
turkey for $4.20, ham steak
with pineapple ring for
$4.00, salmon steak with
lemon butter sauce for
$4.10 or pork cutlets with
gravy for $3.95. These or-
ders all include a tossed
salad, soup or juice, tea or
coffee.
Following your
Boxing Day supper, head
over to the Legion Hall
where the Minnedosa
Bombers are hosting a
dance. Tickets are $2.50
each.
Next on our list –
some clothing items! For
her, we can browse the
racks at Hainstock’s Fash-
ions for pants, blazers and
shirts cozy velour tops and
bottoms. Over at Hain-
stock’s Men’s Wear they
are advertising cozy Cald-
well sweaters by Knit-Rite
Mills of Winnipeg. Hain-
stock’s offer free gift wrap-
ping, early lay-a-way and
gift certificates.
