Chapter 4 DHCP Relay Agent

This chapter will introduce the conception of DHCP relay agent and how to realize it.
It will guide you on how to configure and test the DHCP server too.

4.1 DHCP Relay Agent Theory

4.1.1 About DHCP

The original DHCP protocol requires that the user end and the server must be at the
same subnet, they can not work by crossing network segment. Therefore, it is wasteful
that whenever you are configuring the dynamic host machine, you will need to set a
DHCP server on all those network segments. The DHCP relay agent could solve such
problem; it undertakes the relay agent task between the DHCP user end and the server
in different network segments. It sends the DHCP protocol message cross the network
segment to the destination DHCP server so that those DHCP user ends in different
network could share the same DHCP server.
4.1.2 DHCP Relay Agent Working Process

The DHCP client send request messages to DHCP server, once the DHCP relay agent got that
message and then deal with it, send it to assigned DHCP server in other network segment.
According to the necessary info from the message, the server will send the configuration info back
to user end by DHCP relay agent and then it will finish the dynamic configuration for the client.

(1) Once the DHCP relay agent got the DHCP-DISCOVER or DHCP-REQUEST
message, it will deal with them as follows:
„ In order to preventing the DHCP message shaping as loop circuit ,abandon
those DHCP request messages whose message header hops field values are
greater than limited. Otherwise, continue the following steps:
„ Checking the giaddr field. If it is 0, you will need to set the giaddr field as the
receiving request message access IP address. If there are several IP addresses,
you may choose one of them and then those entire request message accepted
from that access will use that IP address. If the giaddr field is not 0, no need
to change.
„ Once the hops field added, it stands for the DHCP relay agent has been added
too.
„ Set the request message TTL as DHCP relay agent equipment TTL default
value but not cut down from the original request message TTL .Both the
relay message loop circuit problem and the hops limit problems can be
solved by hops fields.
„ The DHCP request message’s destination address
„ DHCP request message destination address will be changed as DHCP server
or the next DHCP relay IP address. Then, it will send the DHCP request
message relay to DHCP server or the next DHCP relay.
(2) According to giaddr fields, the DHCP server will assign IP address and other
parameters for the user end and then send the DHCP response message to the DHCP
relay device identified as giaddr fields. Once the DHCP relay equipment received the
DHCP response message, it will deal with it as follows:
„ DHCP relay supposed that all response messages will be send to the direct
connecting DHCP client Giaddr fields will be used to recognize the interface
directly connecting to the user end. If the giaddr is not the local interface
address, DHCP relay will give up the response message.
„ The DHCP relay checks the message broadcasting flags. If the flag is 1, you
need to send the response message broadcasting to the client or else, it will
send the response message unicasting to the client, its destination address will
be yiaddr, and the link layer address will be chaddr.

(3) Jinghong Micro-CMTS layer 3 modes DHCP relay agent realization

Jinghong CMTS default 4 IP subnet ports for CM, CPE, STB, MTA, the CM will use the

subnet access IP as giaddr field DHCP relay agent address and the CPE,STB and MTA

will use CPE subnet access IP as giaddr DHCP relay agent address to finish relay agent

function. The CMTS could only distinguish CM and CPE, IP address for STB, MTA must

be distinguished by DHCP server.

4.2 Set CMTS Network Parameters and Realize DHCP Relay Agent

4.2.1 Description

In the CM&CPE network (HFC), CMTS will be used as DHCP relay gateway equipment and it
will send the DHCP broadcasting package to destination DHCP server .For the reason that the
CMTS has been defaulted to distinguish only CM and CPE, you need to set CM & CPE subnet IP
on the CMTS and ensure they are working at layer3 router mode. DHCP server needs to set static
router whose destinations are pointing to CM & CPE.

4.2.2 Demonstration of Configuration

Parameter Value
CM 、 CPE subnet DHCP server
192.168.0.253
CM & CPE subnet parameter address
CM、CPE networking mode Layer 3 router mode

4.2.3 Description Process

(1) While the CMTS receiving HFC , DHCP finds and requests messages to change
destination IP into IP of DHCP server or IP of next DHCP relay equipment. Change
giaddr field of DHCP message into requested subnet address (172.16.0.1/172.17.0.1)
from CM or CPE and change broadcast to unicast and then send to DHCP server.
(2) The DHCP server
DHCP server gets finding and requesting messages from CMTS , checking giaddr
field , finding the action scope in the DHCP which matched with giaddr field
(172.16.0.1/172.17.0.1), then assign the free IP to relevant action scope.
(3) Once the CMTS got the DHCP server response and confirm message, it will
change unicasting into broadcasting and then send it to HFC downstream.
According to this example, we can separate the CM and CPE to two different subnet,
172.16.0.0/24 and 172.17.0.0/24 and then realize DHCP relay and router transmission
by CMTS.

4.3 Micro-CMTS built-in DHCP Configuration and Implement

4.3.1 Description

Micro-CMTS system has integrated DHCP/TFTP server for easy configuring and
managing. It has cut the invested cost for those operators at initial stage or small
scaled HFC.
Jinghong’s built-in DHCP factory defaults could only configure three scopes: Layer 2
network, Layer 3 CM subnet, Layer 3 CPE subnet. The server defaults option is the
CMTS WAN interface IP address, the starting file name defaulted as:
/home/tftp/cm.bin, the expire date default is 0(never expire).

While the CM/CPE working at layer 2 mode, the built-in DHCP server default assign IP address at
the same field of CMTS WAN interface, CM or CPE will obtain free IP address of the layer 2
CMTS network. if the CM, it will download configuration file “cm.bin” from 192.168.0.254 TFTP
server.
B. CM and CPE working at Layer 2 mode
When the CM/CPE working at layer 3 router mode, for CM, the built-in DHCP server defaulted
assign IP address at the same field of CM subnet interface, the CM will obtain the free IP address
(172.16.0.x)from the corresponding Layer 3 CM network, it will download configuration file
“cm.bin” from 192.168.0.254 TFTP server. If CPE, the built-in DHCP server defaults assign IP
address at the same CPE subnet interface, the CPE will obtain those free IP addresses (172.17.0.x)
from Layer 3 CPE network.
Notice:The built-in DHCP,TFTP server offer only IP address assigning of HFC terminal
equipment, if there is any needs for built-in DHCP server, you must point both the CM and CPE
subnet DHCP server addresses to CMTS interface IP ,or, you must point the DHCP server to real
DHCP server address.

Chapter 5 Command Line (CLI) Management

5.1 CLI mode

For convenient management, Micro-CMTS uses only one user mode, that is administor user mode,
all parameters can be set under such mode. Users can finish configurations for CMTS network
parameters,RF parameters and other Jinghong unique functions by CLI interface, they can check
the system running status,CM info and the CPE info, too.

5.2 Command complete & parameter inform

Press TAB you can complete some of the input commands. Assuming there are two complete
methods for some commands before pressing TAB (e.g. co can complete as configure or copy) ,
the Micro-CMTS control panel will ringing but not executing that command.

5.3 User management mode command

While telnet CMTS, use the user name ADMIN (default password ADMIN). The user enters

Chapter 6 Configuration Security

6.1 Communication Filter

Micro-CMTS support filter of user management and those filters based on ACL. You
may set CMTS host visit control list by ACL, if it is NULL, it has the rights to visit
CMTS host, or else, only those IP on the list could visit CMTS.

6.2 DHCP Security

Micro-CMTS support DHCP security certificates, by enabling DHCP security

certificates function, it can prohibit user bounding private IP address into network and
threatening of illegal IP address.

Chapter 7 Troubleshooting
You might suffer some problems while provide data service in HFC. CM can not
be online; user can not access internet; data rate slower, etc. Here are some
troubleshooting methods for Micro-CMTS

7.1 PC can not access Internet

7.1.1 Analysis of causes

Usually, when the user can not access internet, both CM and CPE is online status, the
website can not be unfolded. The common reason might be network interface failure
and DNS failure, few cases among those might be caused by HFC failure. If the CPE
works at layer 3 router mode, you need to check the static router settings.

7.1.2 Testing methods

You may locate faults by ICMP testing:

1) Check the HFC connection faults by user pc ping CPE subnet gateway address
2) Check the CMTS and output interface connection faults by CMTS ping output
gateway address
3) Check the static router by user pc ping CMTS output interface gateway (apply to
layer 3 router mode)
4) Check the connectivity by user pc ping DNS server

7.1.3 Judgment & troubleshooting

7.2 Slow Data Rate

7.2.1 Analysis of causes

This usually caused by low bandwidth and bad HFC network signal.

7.2.2 Testing methods

1)CPE (PC) ping the public IP address to check network delay

2)DHCP server ping CM to check the network delay, the normal delay range should
be 10-30msec.
3)Upper layer switch ping public IP address to check the network delay.
4)CEP (PC) ping DNS server
7.2.3 Judgment & troubleshooting

7.3 CM can not be online

7.3.1 Analysis of causes

CM can not be online might be caused by HFC connection faults and CM authority
control faults.

7.3.2 Testing methods

There are five steps in CM online process: initialization, tune downstream and
synchronization lock, upstream ranging, DHCP to obtain IP address, TFTP to
download CM configuration files, then CM is online. You can watch those processes
by accessing the built-in web (IP address: 192.168.100.1) of the CM or by utilizing
network management software.

7.3.3 Judgment & troubleshooting

7.4 CM offline frequently

7.4.1 Analysis of causes

If the CM offline frequently, it should be HFC faults which mainly funnel noise interference,
unsuited uplink attenuation, inappropriate upstream frequency, etc.

7.4.2 Testing methods

If the CM offline frequently, that is to say, the CM will offline automatically after
working a while normally, they can online again or can not be online. Once this
occurs, you should use spectrum analyzer to check the US channel noise first and
judge whether there is any obviously regular or gusty interference on the working
frequency point. You may also judge the faults by checking SNR and CRC error via
NMS.
You need to confirm whether the interference is all band or single band by spectrum
analyzer. If the HFC is ok, you need check the CM stability.

7.4.3 Judgment and troubleshooting

If the channel interference or circuit fault has been confirmed, just remove it. You may
also change other upstream channel frequency point to avoid interference. Replace
another CM to check the CM faults.

7.5 Access internet slow speed

7.5.1 Analysis causes

While suffering slow speed website visiting or files downloading, it might be the
wrong DNS address configuration. For single output users, you should check whether
there is any package lost from ping DNS server in private network. Second, usually,
the ISP will offer 2 or more DNS domain name resolution addresses, you should put
the faster DNS first. While for multi-output users, for the reason that they have
applied several ISP circuits, each of them will offer their own DNS domain name
server address, here the user should choose the faster DNS first. Second, the router
between user pc to DNS will affect on the speed of address resolution.
7.5.2 Testing methods

Checking the PING package delay from user PC to DNS server by ICMP.

7.5.3 Judgment and troubleshooting

Checking DNS server configuration and optimize the network structure.
