Assigned on October 17th, 2018
Due on October 24th, 2018
Note: You need to solve and display the required descriptive manually followed by the check
using the Software PASW® 21.0, Minitab® 16.

Question 1: A data set of 24 entries is listed below:

0.2 0.2 0.3 0.4 1.3 1.6 1.6 2.0

2.1 2.7 3.1 3.3 3.5 3.7 3.9 4.1
4.4 5.6 6.1 6.6 6.7 7.4 8.0 8.3
(a) Construct a stem-and-leaf display of the data.
(b) Find out the median and the first and the third quartiles of the data.
(c) Calculate mean and standard deviation.

Question 2: The tensile strength of certain material is thought to be a function of curing

temperature. A study was carried out in which samples of 12 specimens of that material
were prepared using curing temperatures of 20◦C and 45◦C. The data below show the
tensile strength values in mega pascals (MPa).
20◦C : 2.07 2.14 2.22 2.03 2.21 2.03 2.05 2.18 2.09 2.14 2.11 2.02
45◦C : 2.52 2.15 2.49 2.03 2.37 2.05 1.99 2.42 2.08 2.42 2.29 2.01
(a) Find the five number summary for each of the above type of data?
(b) Comment if curing temperature has an influence on tensile strength, based on
constructing the comparative box plot?

Question 3: Observations on the burst strength (psi) were obtained both for test nozzle
closure welds and for production cannister nozzle welds are as follows:
Test 7200 6100 7300 7300 8000 7400 7300 7300 8000 6700 8300
Cannister 5250 5625 5900 5700 5900 5700 6050 5800 6000 5875 6100
5850 6600
Construct a comparative box plot and comment on its interesting features.

Question 4: The following scores represent the statistics of certain test scores:
23 60 79 32 57 74 52 70 82 36 80 77 81 95 41 65 92 85 55 76
52 10 64 75 78 25 80 98 81 67 41 71 83 54 64 72 88 62 74 43
60 78 89 76 84 48 84 90 15 79 34 67 17 82 69 74 63 80 85 61

(a) Construct a stem and leaf plot for the examination grades
(b) Construct a relative frequency histogram, draw an estimate of the graph of the
distribution and discuss the skewness of the distribution.
(c) Compute the sample mean, sample median, and sample standard deviation.

Question 5: The following data represent the readings of flow (in 0.01 in) in Marshall Mix
Design Laboratory experiment:-
17 20 10 9 23 13 12 19 18 24 12 14 6 9 13 06 07 10 13 07
16 18 8 13 03 32 09 07 10 11 13 07 18 07 10 04 27 19 16 08
07 10 05 14 15 10 09 06 07 15
(a) Construct a box-plot for the flow values.
(b) Set up a relative frequency distribution and construct a relative frequency
histogram.
