ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I am very thankful to everyone who all supported me, for I

have completed my project effectively and moreover, on time.

I am equally grateful to my teacher Mrs. Bhavna Ma’am. She

gave me moral support and guided me in different matters
regarding the topic, which also helped me in doing a lot of
brainstorming and I came to know about so many new things.
She has been very kind and patient, whilst suggesting to me
the outlines of this project, and clarifying my doubts. I thank
her for her overall support.

Last but not the least, I would like to thank my parents who
helped me a lot in gathering different information,
collecting data and guiding me from time to time in
completing this project. Despite their busy schedules, they
gave me different ideas to help make this project unique.

Thanks again to all who supported me

Thank you

Project Overview

“Set up a Virtual Network of 10 Computers” is

basically a hands-on-project. Setting up a network is
a good way to get more use out of your computers and
peripherals, particularly for small and home business
users.

Networks allow you to share a single broadband

Internet connection among multiple computers and PC
users.

They are able to share files among computers more

easily and also share software resources such as
diaries.

This project will be developed in a personal computer

running at least Windows 8. This project will be
helpful to get the thorough practical knowledge of
Virtual Networking learned in Summative Assessment
– 1 (2015-16).

Network Topology: Network topology is the arrangement of

the various elements (links, nodes, etc.) of a computer
network. Essentially, it is the topological structure of a
network and may be depicted physically or logically. Physical
topology is the placement of the various components of a
network, including device location and cable installation, while
logical topology illustrates how data flows within a network,
regardless of its physical design. Distances between nodes,
physical interconnections, transmission rates, or signal types
may differ between two networks, yet their topologies may be
identical.
Types of Networks:
There are several different types of computer networks.
Computer networks can be characterized by their size as well
as their purpose.
The size of a network can be expressed by the geographic area
they occupy and the number of computers that are part of the
network. Networks can cover anything from a handful of
Page | 10

devices within a single room to millions of devices spread

across the entire globe.
Some of the different networks based on size are:
 Personal area network, or PAN
 Local area network, or LAN
 Metropolitan area network, or MAN
 Wide area network, or WAN
In terms of purpose, many networks can be considered
general purpose, which means they are used for everything
from sending files to a printer to accessing the Internet. Some
types of networks, however, serve a very particular purpose.
Some of the different networks based on their main purpose
are:
 Storage area network, or SAN
 Enterprise private network, or EPN
 Virtual private network, or VPN
Network Switches and Hubs
A network switch (also called switching hub, bridging hub,
officially MAC bridge) is a computer networking device that
connects devices together on a computer network, by using
packet switching to receive, process and forward data to the
destination device. Unlike less advanced network hubs, a
network switch forwards data only to one or multiple devices
Page | 11

that need to receive it, rather than broadcasting the same

data out of each of its ports.
A network hub, or a repeater, is a simple network device that
does not manage any of the traffic coming through it. Any
packet entering a port is flooded out or "repeated" on every
other port, except for the port of entry. Since every packet is
repeated on every other port, packet collisions affect the
entire network, limiting its overall capacity.
Security Measure for a VPN: Make sure you have
Client-side Firewall with up to date rules
Anti-Virus software with up to date virus definition file
Up to date Windows or other application security
patches
Up to date VPN software client, used to connect to the VPN

 Service Auditing

File Auditing and Intrusion Detection Systems

Project Objectives
The objectives of the project are as follows:
1. Understanding the concept of Network
Conectivity.
2. Gettting the Pactical Knowledge of setting up
a virtual private network.
3. Connecting 10 computers and then sharing
Hardware and resources among them.
4. Understanding Hardware configuration of
10 computers connected in a netwok.
5. Creating and understanding Local Area
Network.
6. Understanding different type of network
Topologies.
7. Understanding about switches and hubs.

 Understanding various Security essentials for a

network

THE PROJECT SET-UP

(Step by Step Procedure)

Setting up a VPN in Windows is a two step process. 1) Set up

one computer to share files (server). 2) Set up another
computer to access them (client).

1. Open your web browser and go to www.whatismyip.com. Write down

the IP address. You will need it to configure the client.
Page | 14

2. Click on start then search for Run

3.Type control and hit enter

4. Click Network and Internet Connections.

Page | 15

5. Click on set up a new connection or network .

6.click on connect to a workplace

Page | 16

7 . Then click on use my internet connection (VPN)

8. Then further select first option and click on next

Page | 17

9. Then a box will appear asking your IP address , using first

step fill your IP address and if you want then you may
provide a username and password to . Unmark those two ticks .

Note : you should tick the point which is given below to

allow other users to access your computer . If you will not
do so then your VPN will not be accessed to other people.
You can also select people to whom you want to give
access. If any user is not added then you have to add
him.

10. click on create and your VPN will be created . you can see
it on your networks .
