Topic- Consequence of the Foreign Direct Investment in Retail Sector In India

“No country will be able to address it’s biggest challenges without economic
development”- P.M. Dr. Manmohan Singh.

India is the second largest populated nation in the world. With this reputation as highly
bulky manpower, India has its problems and challenges. The thirst of development leads the
India to take some of the major decisions, and welcome of F.D.I. is one of them.

Indian economy, though it is known to the world as one of the stable and highly growing,
has its certain issues. Due to some factors the speed of the this growth has been decreased now a
days. Economic meltdown in the international arena made tremendous impacts on every nation.
But due to having controlled and well organized policies of the Indian Government and RBI,
Indian economy could overcome from it.

But since from its independence, India still struggling with its some of the ‘traditional
problems’, i.e. unemployment, to provide basic amenities like drinking water to all, energy self
dependence, fuel dependency, sky touching prices, inflation, control on population, etc.

So, Indian economy needs some power boosters to grow properly. On the one hand the
agriculture sector, despite of having lack of irrigation facilities produces very huge bulk, but due
to lack efficient storage capacity and proper equilibrium between demand and supply, the huge
production goes into the waste. Farmers on the other hand despite of their hard work, could not
get fair prices and the Government is still puzzled in this matter. The unemployment in the youth
has its own issues. In rural areas despite of skills they cant get proper opportunites, and in the
urban areas the flood of population created cut-throat competition. Hence there is a need of
stable and balanced development of economy.

Foreign Direct Investment is a catalyst that can play a vital role in moving the Indian
economy ahead. The F.D.I. issue, despite of its own merits and demerits still retained its
importance. Retail marketing in India has a very huge potential. It can be considered as a better
option to be focused for F.D.I. in India.

Investors throughout the world are looking towards the east for the better option of
investment. And especially India and China are the massive sources for them. So, the Indian

economy can be benefitted from the F.D.I. in retail marketing; but there is a need of clear
government policies and certainty in legal aspects along with long term decisions.

Opportunities will be there, but it’s up to those, who know better to grab and utilize them.
