Although already widely deployed, several countries announced LTE
services in Q2 2017 and by the end of June 2017 there were 601 LTE
networks in service worldwide. In 2017 there have been LTE/4G services
introduced in Afghanistan, Antarctica, Barbados, Bermuda, Botswana,
Congo, Cook Islands, Guyana, Libya, Madagascar, Nepal, Northern
Mariana Islands, Myanmar, Pakistan, Samoa, Somalia, South Africa,
Sudan, Tahiti, Trinidad & Tobago and Vietnam.

Number of commercial networks using TDD bands 38-43 at

98 LTE TDD (TD-LTE) systems are commercially launched in 56
countries. There have been launches during 2017 by Tiscali (Italy),
Telecom Namibia and most recently Vodafone Spain. 32
operators have deployed converged FDD & TDD networks. APT
Taiwan and DTAC Thailand have revealed plans to deploy TDD
systems, and TDD spectrum is being used for testing future
technology for 5G networks.

41 operators have now launched commercial services using APT700
band 28, or services in compatible European bands (CEPT 700). Among
recent deployments are Shanghai Oriental Pearl Group (deploying an
FDD-LTE network for smart city applications) and TPG Telecom in
Australia. 700MHz spectrum has been awarded in Iceland, and the
licensing consultation process is proceeding in Colombia and Sweden.

280 operators have commercially launched LTE1800 (band 3) systems in
119 countries/territories either as a single band or as part of a multi-
band deployment. In the last quarter, launches have been announced
by operators in Myanmar and Nepal.

Operators have different amounts of spectrum they can aggregate, and vary in
their deployment of 256QAM modulation and 4x4 MIMO. Some operators report
theoretical downlink speeds; others report live-network tested speeds. Coverage of
very fast networks varies within countries and by operator.

3GPP-technology IoT network launches, trials, demos and plans by

We have counted 6 commercial NB-IoT/Cat-NB1 networks, with a further 55
networks in 37 countries trialling, demonstrating or planning to deploy NB-
IoT/Cat-NB1; 2 commercial LTE-M/Cat-M1 networks (Verizon USA and AT&T
USA), and 16 other networks in 10 countries trialling, demonstrating or
planning to deploy LTE-M/Cat-M1.

In the first six months of 2017 we have identified at least 36 operators from 23
countries that have demonstrated 5G technologies, or announced 5G tests, or
trials. At least 22 operators to date have now made public commitments to
deployment of pre-standards ‘5G’ networks in 13 countries, with the earliest
launch dates currently planned by operators in Italy and the US. We include
only countries where operators have announced their plans, not countries
where governments have made general statements of intention.
