Engineering Mechanics
Max Marks: 80M
Duration: 3hr
Part-A
Answer All the Questions
1. State the following: Parallelogram law Principles of moments
2. Two forces 80 N and 70 N act simultaneously at a point. Find the resultant force if the angle
between them is 140°.
3. State triangle law of forces.
4. Define (a) force and (b) moment of force.
5. Two forces act at an angle of 120°. The bigger force is 60 kN and the resultant is
perpendicular to the smaller one. Find the smaller force.
6. (a)Name any three specifications of force.
(b)State the conditions of equilibrium of a body acted by co- planar forces.
7. State Lami’s Theorem and write the relevant foemulae?
8. What is a couple? Write any two characteristics of a couple.
9. Define Equilibrium of a body and given conditions of equilibrium when subjected to forces?
10. Define System of Forces?
Part-A
Answer Any Five Questions
1. Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant of the following system of forces:
2. Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant of the following system of forces:

3. A roller of diameter 500 mm and of 50 weights 1500 N is to be taken up a step m P required on

the handle to pull the roller up the step.

4. The following forces act at a point:

(i)25 N inclined at 35° towards north of east
(ii)20 N towards north
(iii)30 N towards north-west
(iv)20 N inclined at 20° towards south of west
Determine the magnitude and direction of resultant force.

5. A lamp weighing 8 N is suspended from the ceiling by means of a wire. It is pulled to one side
by a horizontal cord, until the wire makes and angle of 60° with the ceiling. Find the tension in
the wire and cord.

6. A body of weight 1 KN is suspended by two strings of 4m & 3m length attached at the same
horizontal level 5m apart? Find the tension in the string?

7. A smooth circular cylinder of radius 1.5m is lying in a triangular groove on side of which makes
15◦ angle other 40◦ with the horizontal. Find the reactions at the surfaces of contact if there is no
friction and the cylinder weights 1KN.

8. Find the magnitude of two forces such that if they act at right angles the resultant is 10N but if
they act at 60◦ their resultant is 13N.
