Apreciados amigos,

Compartimos con gran alegría los nuevos logros de el Laboratorio de Lectura,

Escritura y Matemática -LEMA-, programa que ha sido seleccionados por la
organización HundrED* como una de las 100 innovaciones educativas para 2019.
HundrED es una organización no gubernamental con sede principal en Helsinki que
descubre, investiga y promueve innovaciones educativas de impacto que se puedan
propagar fácilmente y que hayan causado un cambio significativo en la vida de los
niños alrededor del mundo.
El pasado 8 de Noviembre, Catalina González viajó al Congreso Internacional en
Helsinki y participó en el panel acerca de "la actitud que se necesita tener para hacer
que las cosas cambien”, puntualizando que debemos tener tres actitudes principales:
Intransigencia, con la inequidad educativa existente; impaciencia, de tal manera que
tratemos de buscar soluciones más rápidas, pues se estima que 265 millones de niños
y niñas asistiendo a la escuela hoy, carecen habilidades de lectura y matemática
básica, herramientas fundamentales para seguir aprendiendo y acercarse a la
tecnología de manera efectiva y critica; e ingenuidad, para prestar poca atención a
las muchas barreras que se oponen al cambio, y continuar haciendo nuestro trabajo.
Además compartimos que en el mes de Agosto, en reunión llevada a cabo en
Washington, se presentó el libro Leapfrogging Inequality- Remaking Education to
Help Young People Thrive (Superando la Desigualdad - Rehaciendo la Educación para
Hacer que los Niños Prosperen) de Rebecca Winthrop con Adam Barton y Eileen
McGivney.
En el libro publicado por la organización Brookings*, se reseña LEMA- Laboratorio de
Lectura, Escritura y Matemática, como una de las innovaciones del catálogo global,
que podrían ayudar a disminuir las desigualdades, disminuyendo el tiempo necesario
para superarlas. También se destacan las principales actividades que se desarrollan
dentro del programa LEMA como son: la capacitación de maestros y facilitadores
de aprendizaje, los materiales y filosofías que éstos aprenden a dominar;

permitiendo a los alumnos aprender libremente, a su propio ritmo y estilo, de una
manera amena y activa. LEMA además se destaca por facilitar el aprendizaje
colaborativo y entre pares. Brookings es una organización privada sin ánimo de lucro
con sede en Washington, dedicada a la investigación, la educación y la publicación
de temas importantes acerca de la política doméstica y extranjera.
Aprovechamos además esta oportunidad para agradecer a todos ustedes, nuestros
socios y amigos, por haber confiado en nosotros y por colaborar dentro de sus
programas a hacer realidad el sueño de una educación amable, activa y eficaz para
todos.
Compartimos la certeza de que la lectoescritura y la matemática básica
son aprendizajes fundamentales, a los que miles de niños y niñas aún no tienen
derecho, pero necesarios para alcanzar el conocimiento a lo largo de la vida,
construir sociedades mas democráticas y afrontar los retos del mundo hoy y mañana
de manera critica.
Es para nosotros un orgullo constatar que nuestro trabajo de 36 años (desde la
creación del abcdespañol), se mantiene vigente en el panorama educativo mundial;
superando retos, y asegurando que los niños y las niñas de hoy obtengan
herramientas fundamentales, que les permite contribuir de manera consciente y
activa a la construcción de soluciones para el mundo de hoy y de mañana.

Dear friends,

It's with great joy that we share the new achievements of the Literacy Education and
Math Lab -LEMA, program that has been selected by HundrED as one of the 100
educational innovations for 2019. HundrED* is a non-governmental organization with
headquarters in Helsinki that discovers, researches and promotes impactful
innovations in education, that can scale and spread easily and that are proven to
positively impact the lives of children around the world.
On November 8th, Catalina González traveled to the Innovation Summit in Helsinki
and participated in the panel "what kind of attitude is needed to make change
happen", highlighting three attitudes: Intolerance, towards the inequality in
education that still exists today; impatience, to find faster solutions for the estimated
265 million children attending school today, and that lack basic reading and math
skills; and a touch of naiveness, to pay little attention to the many barriers that
oppose change, and to continue to do the work.
We also want to share that in the month of August, in a meeting held in Washington,
the book Leapfrogging Inequality- Remaking Education to Help Young People Thrive
by Rebecca Winthrop with Adam Barton and Eileen McGivney was realeased. In the
book published by the the Center for Education Innovation at Brookings*, LEMA-
Literacy Education and Math Lab is highlighted as one of the innovations of their
global catalog, which could help reduce inequalities, decreasing the time necessary
to overcome them.
The report highlights the main activities that are developed within the LEMA
program such as: teacher and learning coach training, and the use of playful
materials and philosophies that allow students to learn freely, at their own pace and
in a fun and active way. LEMA also stands out for facilitating collaborative and peer-
to-peer learning. Brookings is a private non-profit organization based in Washington,
dedicated to research, education and publication of important topics about domestic
and foreign policy.
