1. The weight of a chunk of moist soil sample is 20.7 kg. The volume of the soil chunk
measured before drying is 0.011 m3. After the sample is dried out in an oven, its weight
is 17.15 kg. The specific gravity of solids is 2.65. Determine the water content, unit
weight of moist soil, void ratio, porosity, degree of saturation.
2. An undisturbed soil sample has the following data:
Void ratio = 0.78, water content = 12% and specific gravity of solids = 2.68. Determine
the wet unit weight, dry unit weight, degree of saturation and porosity.
3. Draw a gradation curve and find the coefficients of uniformity (Cu) and curvature (Cc)
for a soil sample that has the following test data for mechanical grain‐size analysis:
4. A sample of soil was tested in the laboratory and the test results were listed as
follows. Classify the soil by both the AASHTO system and the Unified Soil Classification
System.
1. Liquid Limit = 29%, Plastic Limit 19%
Mechanical grain size analysis
5. A set of laboratory compaction test data and results is tabulated as follows. The test
was conducted in accordance with the ASTM D 698 standard proctor test.

Plot a Proctor curve (dry unit weight versus moisture content) and determine the soil’s
maximum dry unit weight and optimum moisture content. Plot air void curve (0%, 5%,
10% ‐ Assume Specific Gravity 2.70).
6. During construction of a soil embankment, a sand‐cone in place unit weight test was
performed in the field. The following data were obtained:
1. Weight of sand used to fill test hole and funnel of sand‐cone device = 867 g.
2. Weight of sand to fill funnel = 1.538 g/cm3.
3. Unit weight of sand = 1.538 g/cm3.
4. Weight of wet soil from the test hole = 747 kg.
5. Moisture content of soil from test hole as determined by Speedy Moisture Tester =
13.7%.
Determine the dry unit weight of compacted soil.
7. Construct a flow net for the sheet pile. Estimate the seepage per foot of width of
the sheet pile. (Please use graph paper).
