1. What was the starving time? Why did it happen? What was the significance of the starving time? What social and
environmental issues almost caused the expiry of the Jamestown colony? How did it revive itself?

2. Explain how the headright system encouraged migration to the New World. Why were indentured servants necessary?

3. Compare and contrast the different economies and slave systems of the Chesapeake, the Deep South, and West Indies.

4. Explain the role religion played in the founding of New England, and how it shaped the New World’s first democracies.

5. How did the founding of the Middle colonies help create a more diverse and tolerant society? (Consider religious,
ethnic, and economic factors)
6. Explain how the triangular trade, the British Industrial Revolution, and the development of the American colonies were
connected. What was the middle passage? Why did it happen?

7. Explain why in each region of the British colonies slavery developed differently and what conditions and events that
caused the shift from indentured servitude to chattel slavery.

8. The Great Awakening – What was it? Why did it take place? Explain how the Great Awakening and the
Enlightenment contradicted traditional forms of authority. Significant people related to the Great Awakening
Mayflower Compact – Who signed it? Why was it significant? Who did it affect?
9. Why was the Navigation Act of 1660 significant? Why was it put in place?
10. What was the Maryland Act of Toleration? Why was it significant ? Who did it affect?
11. Why did Bacon’s Rebellion happen? What was the significance of this rebellion? Who was involved?
12. What prompted the Zenger Trial? Why was it significant? What was the ruling?

13. What were the differences similarities/differences between the southern, middle and New England colonies? Know the
type of colony of the 13 colonies (proprietary, royal, corporate)

14. How were the American colonies Anglicized? How were the colonies different from Britain? Consider social,
political, and economic conditions.
