Course Objectives: To introduce the students to

 Significance of each and every components of a building.


 Types and geometric design of stair cases.
 Suitable type of flooring, plastering and painting.
 Various types of temporary works.
 Requirements for damp-proofing and energy-efficient buildings.

1. FOUNDATIONS: Necessity, Types, Setting out, Foundations in black cotton soils /


problematic soils.

2. MASONRY: Stone masonry – Setting out, joints, types; Brick masonry – Terminologies,
Bonds and Reinforced brick work; Block masonry – Concrete block, Stone composite, Brick –
stone composite; Types of walls; Masonry arches and types.

3. LINTEL, CHEJJA, CANOPY AND BALCONY : Types & Functions

4. ROOFS - Features of a good roof, Classification, Steel and timber trusses.

5. STAIRS - Types, Requirements, Geometric design of stairs, Ramps, Lifts & Escalators.

6. FLOORING, PLASTERING AND PAINTING: Purpose & Types.

7. DOOR AND WINDOWS: Positioning, proportioning & Types.

8. DAMP PROOFING: Causes, Effects & Methods.

9. TEMPORARY WORKS: Form works, Shoring, Scaffolding & Under pinning.

10. ENERGY EFFICIENT BUILDINGS: Sustainability concepts, Green building concepts and
requirements, Energy conservation in buildings, Rating of buildings

Self Learning:

 Doors and Windows Fixtures and fastenings.


 DPC treatment in buildings.
 Site Visit of Manufacturing of brick and reports detail, analysis of bricks N B C.
 Preparing model of following roof works: North Light truss, Lean to Roofs, King post Truss, Queen
Post Truss
 Preparing Model of Various types of Stairs
 Site visits and Market studies shall be conducted to facilitate understanding of latest materials and
construction techniques on-site.
 Pedagogy should establish the linkage of the relevant material and construction techniques from
past to present.
