Module Description
1. Introduction to internal combustion engines:- engine performance, engine design, fluid dynamics during the
four cycles, Designing high efficiency IC engines:- port flow design, combustion chamber and piston shape,
squish, compression ratio, design for low speed and idle and spark and injection timing .

2. Modeling CFD in IC Engine Design: The Role of CFD Analysis in Engine Design, Types of CFD Analysis for IC
Engines: - Port Flow Analysis, Cold Flow Analysis, In-Cylinder Combustion Simulation, Full Cycle Simulations.
The IC Engine Analysis System: Process Compression in the ANSYS Workbench. Getting Started With ICE
ANSYS Workbench: The Workbench Graphical User Interface, Workflow, Creating an IC Engine Analysis
System, Setting up an IC Engine Analysis System, Boundary Conditions and Monitor Settings, Understanding
Cell States.

3. Cold flow simulation: preparing the geometry, meshing and setting up the analysis. Preparing the geometry:-
geometry decomposition for a cold flow simulation, nomenclature of decomposed geometry: straight valve
geometry with chamber decomposition, canted valve geometry with chamber decomposition, any engine
geometry without chamber decomposition. Viewing the bodies and parts: valve region, port, chamber- canted
valve and straight valve. Animating the valve and piston, moving the piston to a specified crank angle, setting
the solver for a cold flow simulation, setting the boundary conditions and monitors for a cold flow simulation.
Cold Flow Simulation: Meshing:- Meshing Procedure for Cold Flow Simulation, Global Mesh Settings for Cold
Flow Simulation- Defaults Group, Sizing Group, Inflation Group, Defeaturing Group. Local Mesh Settings for
Cold Flow Simulation: Valve Region Meshing- Valve Inboard and Valve Vlayer Meshing, Port Region Meshing-
Port, Inflation Port, Valve Port, Interface Between Port and Inboard; Chamber Meshing- Straight Valve,
Chamber Upper Meshing, Chamber Lower Meshing and Chamber Valves; Canted Valve- Interface Between
Chamber and Vlayer. layer-cylinder and Piston. Cold Flow Simulation: Setting Up the Analysis:- General
Settings, Models, Materials, Boundary Conditions, Dynamic Mesh, Events, Solution Methods, Solution Controls,
Monitors, Solution Initialization and Run Calculation.

4. Port flow simulation: preparing the geometry, meshing and setting up the analysis. Preparing the Geometry-
Geometry Decomposition for Port Flow Simulation, Viewing the Bodies and Parts, Setting the Solver for a Port
Flow Simulation, Setting the Boundary Conditions and Monitors for a Port Flow Simulation. Meshing for Port
Flow Simulation, Global Mesh Settings for Port Flow Simulation- Defaults Group, Sizing Group, Inflation Group,
Defeaturing Group. Local Mesh Settings for Port Flow Simulation. Setting Up the Analysis-General Settings,
Models, Materials, Boundary Conditions, Solution Methods, Solution Controls, Monitors, Solution Initialization
and running calculations.

5. Working with the Simulation Results:-Report and Post-processing in CFD-Post. Performing a Design Point
Analysis:-Parameters and Design Points, Parameters In IC Engine System, Application of Parameters in IC
Engine System, Application of Design Point Study- Use of Design Points in Cold Flow Analysis and Use of
Design Points in Port Flow Analysis. Troubleshooting the Simulation:-Geometry Check, Geometry Preparation,
Mesh Generation, Solver Troubleshooting Tutorial: Solving a Cold Flow Simulation, Solving a Port Flow
Simulation

6. In-cylinder combustion modeling
