Elicia’s Intention
Detox 101 is the first book in the Detox for Smarties Course
Series. My intention for this introductory course is to inspire and
teach you how to begin to release the toxic stress in your body
and mind, on a daily basis, in order to improve your health and
well-being.

This cleansing course series is a result of my own detox, healing

and awakening journey-- from my 20 years of experience with
detox programs and retreats around the world, healing myself
from a Systemic Candida condition, plus what I have seen work for
my clients and myself in various conditions and stages of healing.

Use this book as a starting place when you want to change some-
thing--whether it’s a health condition, emotional state, or a
desire to detox and transform your entire life. Retreat yourself at
home, discover and release the root causes of your health condi-
tion, stuck-ness and stress to change your body and life.

Follow these 5 steps as a smart way to cleanse with food and also
to properly prepare for a deeper cleanse using juice/water fast-
ing and emotional healing. This is a guidebook for you to detox
with awareness, including exercises and recommended resources
for holistic detoxification and self-
discovery. Remember to enjoy the
journey--there is no destination, and
you never know what gifts you’ll find
along the way.

With Love & Joy,

Elicia Miller

List your physical symptoms, in gratitude, as signs that you are
ready to make a change to release the cause and deep-rooted
patterns.

vision for my body and life? (Example:
to feel more energy and clarity so I
can…)

Step 2: Become Aware of the Cause
“If you want to change your body, change your
awareness first.” -Dr. Deepak Chopra, M.D.

Toxic Overload
Health conditions are a result of a toxic overload, and symptoms
are expressing that they need your help. No doctor, medicine, de-
tox program or healing center can cure you, only you can assist
your body in reducing and releasing your toxic stress in order to
allow it to heal.

First you must identify what has caused, and is still contribut-
ing to, your symptoms and condition in all areas of your body and
life. By identifying and removing these blocks to health, you are
allowing your body to cleanse and heal. This is not accomplished
through a 2 week cleanse, juice fast, taking detox supplements or
getting treatments alone. It involves conscious choices, on a daily
basis, of what you are feeding your body and mind.

Contact Elicia for a Free Assessment at http://eliciamiller.com.

Environmental chemicals are everywhere, and you cannot avoid

them, so it’s even more critical now than ever that you reduce
the amount of lifestyle toxins (food, drinks, medicine, beauty and
cleaning products) that you chose to put in and on your body to
aid your liver in processing it all.

Your body protects you from toxins by storing them in your fat
cells, and in order to allow your body to lose excess weight, you
must reduce the intake of toxins (such as pesticides, chemicals,
drugs, artificial sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup, partially-
hydrogenated oil and substances found in processed food). These

Elicia@EliciaMiller.com ©2013 All Rights Reserved. http://EliciaMiller.com 8

toxic chemicals are also affecting your hormones and liver func-
tions in charge of metabolism. Instead of reducing calories and
treating symptoms, reduce toxins in order to lose weight and
regain your health to enjoy life!

pH Balance
In his book on detoxification, Cleanse and Purify Thyself, Dr. Rich-
ard Anderson states that the body always strives to maintain a
proper acid/alkaline balance; the more you help it along by eating
the right balance of foods, the less wear and tear on the system.
If an acid condition persists, however, the body will draw minerals
from other areas to try to neutralize the situation.

For instance, calcium, an alkaline-forming mineral, may be re-

leased from bones. This is a short-term solution, which over time,
can lead to osteoporosis. Chronic over-acidity removes oxygen
from the blood and can result in lowered immunity and premature
aging, kidney stone formation, muscle loss, back pain, gout and
other joint diseases.

Chronic degenerative conditions, like cancer, tend to develop

in an over acid environment. Over acidity also can produce that
tired, headachy, fuzzyheaded feeling many people get, especially
after eating.

Mucus is formed from the body protecting itself from a highly

acidic environment and toxic substances such as drugs (especially
aspirin and alcohol); salt; heavy metals; chemicals; antigen-anti-
body complexes and the toxins produced by bacteria, yeast, and
parasites.

When you eat, drink and take too many acid-forming substances
(including thoughts and emotions) the body signals to form mucus
in your stomach, small intestine, and colon as a way to protect
and maintain the alkaline pH balance needed for it to function
properly. When this happens often, the mucus keeps coming and
layering on top of itself, impacting old waste, while trapping the
Elicia@EliciaMiller.com ©2013 All Rights Reserved. http://EliciaMiller.com 9
toxic substances like drugs, chemicals and negative emotions. This
new toxic environment feeds, or rather depletes, the blood and
cells.

We lose our pH balance as a result of:

1) Taking drugs (either medicinal or recreational) which can cause

metabolic stress
2) Being stressed, for emotional stress drains electrolytes just as
if we were eating acid-forming foods
3) Eating acid-forming foods

To replenish the alkaline minerals and your health, become con-

scious of your thoughts and emotions; cleanse your body; eat raw
organic plant-based foods (at least 80% of your diet) and limit ac-
id-forming substances to under 20% of your diet, listed here:

Alcohol, all processed foods, anger, barley, bread, cake, canned

fruit, cereals, chickpeas, chocolate, cigarettes, coffee, complain-
ing, cooked grains (except millet and quinoa), corn, cornstarch,
dairy products, drugs, eggs, foods cooked with oils, glazed or sul-
fured fruits, ketchup, legumes, lentils, meat, fish, birds, shellfish,
mustard, nuts, seeds, beans, oatmeal, pasta, black pepper, pop-
corn, salt, soda crackers, soft drinks, soy products, stress, white
and processed sugar, artificial sweeteners, black tea, overcooked
vegetables, distilled vinegar, all forms of wheat.

When what you digest is overly acidic, the body has to deplete its
own alkaline reserves (also needed for exercise, illness and stress)
to handle these acids.

A simple way to eat well: just stick

to a wide variety of whole, unpro-
cessed foods (vegetables, fruits, nuts
and seeds, whole grains) with small
amounts of organic flesh foods and a
daily dose of fermented veggies (like
raw sauerkraut or kim chi).

Elicia@EliciaMiller.com ©2013 All Rights Reserved. http://EliciaMiller.com 10

Avoid processed/junk foods, refined sugars/carbs, artificial sweet-
eners, preservatives, soda, caffeine, alcohol and the routine use
of pharmaceuticals.

Food For Thought
• Why are you eating/drinking?
• How do you feel about what you are eating/drinking?
• How do you feel while you are eating/drinking?
• How do you feel after you eat/drink?

Step 3: Allow Your Body to Cleanse

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”
- Hippocrates

View your kitchen as your medicine cabinet

During a detox, assist your body’s natural cleansing process by
eliminating toxic stressors. Support and clean your colon, liver,
lungs and kidneys with water and easy to digest (mostly) raw or-
ganic fruits, vegetables and salads, as well as positive thoughts
and emotions. Before fasting, and during a cleansing period, it is
best to prepare your body by eliminating the foods (listed on the
next page) as well as thoughts and emotions (to be covered in
more depth in the next book and during a personal session; start
with a free assessment at http://eliciamiller.com) that are over
stimulating and can exhaust your liver, body, and mind.

High-pesticide fruits and veggies (buy local/organic if possible, or
substitute with another choice):

Apples, apricots, artichokes, cantaloupe from Mexico, celery,

cherries from the United States, grapes from Chile, peaches,
pears, potatoes, raspberries, spinach and strawberries

Elicia@EliciaMiller.com ©2013 All Rights Reserved. http://EliciaMiller.com 18

Lower in pesticides (when you can’t buy organic, choose
these):

Asparagus, avocados, bananas, blackberries, blueberries, broccoli,

Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cantaloupe from the United States (in
season from May to December), carrots, cauliflower, chard, corn,
eggplant, grapefruit, grapes, from the United States (in season
from May to December), kiwi, lettuce (Romaine), okra, onions,
peaches (canned), peas, radishes, tangerines, tomatoes and wa-
termelon

Guidelines
Drink a minimum of 8 glasses of room
temperature water per day in between
meals.

Take the time to chew food well without distractions, be with the
taste and nutrition of the food, in gratitude.

Include foods that create balance and support the body and
mind:

Raw (or lightly steamed)

vegetables, sea vegetables
such as nori, fruit (limit
amount of sweet tropical
moldy fruit and juices) a
small amount of whole
grains (quinoa and brown
rice) and raw/soaked nuts
and seeds.

It’s best to eat raw organic

fruits (eat alone) and vegetables, except crucifer vegetables
should be lightly steamed (organic cold-pressed olive oil, garlic
and lemon is a great sauce/dressing to use).

Elicia@EliciaMiller.com ©2013 All Rights Reserved. http://EliciaMiller.com 19

The healthiest way to eat eggs is poached or soft-boiled - over
steamed veggies or salad. Watch your salt intake; pink Himalayan
salt is okay in small amounts. Raw nori/seaweed provides a natu-
ral salt nutrition for salad wraps; eggs with avocado is a great
combo.

Rebalance your body’s ecology with natural

forms of probiotics and enzymes found in
young coconut water kefir and cultured/
fermented cabbage (kimchi). These will help
with digestion, break up congestion and curb
cravings.

Your stomach doesn’t have teeth, so make sure to chew your food
until it’s liquid. Chewing also lets the stomach know what to get
ready for. That is why some (green) smoothies create a lot of
work for your stomach and sometimes burden the body to assimi-
late more food than you could chew at one time.

Eat until you are satisfied, not full, to leave room for digestion.

Your body cleanses the most when you sleep so when you wake up
scrape your tongue. You are also the most acidic in the morning
and the best way to alkalize is to drink a liter of lime/lemon wa-
ter (warm or room temperature is the best) right away.

Things to Remember
Choose a day to begin your cleanse, commit to a 14, 21 or 30 day
period using the detox herbs recommended on Page 25 while fol-
lowing the cleansing food guidelines. Remember, if you drink wine
and/or eat bread while taking the detox herbs, they will be coun-
teracting each other and you won’t be cleansing your body. Keep
in mind your why and look at each choice as either feeding your
symptoms (keeping you where you are) or moving you towards
your healthy vision.

It is normal to feel a sensation that is usually described as hunger

no matter how much you eat in the early days (up to 2 weeks) of
Elicia@EliciaMiller.com ©2013 All Rights Reserved. http://EliciaMiller.com 20
this kind of diet. It is not actually hunger but the shift away from
a high carbohydrate/glucose diet. During this time your body will
begin using more fat stores, shifting partially into ketosis, to make
up the calorie difference. By the end of the diet most people gen-
erally feel increased energy, have more mental alertness and little
hunger, eat smaller portions, are highly relaxed, and have lower
stress levels.

You may feel lightheaded; this is

normal. Since eating is such a
social event, it is normal to feel
left out when others go out to eat.
Go with them and order food that
comes from this list, lots of
vegetables and light on oils.

When others order alcohol and you

wish to drink, order sparkling
water with a lime in a champagne
glass.

Emotional issues often arise during any changes in eating pat-

terns, especially when the body is using up its stores of fat. This
is normal; try not to make a major life decision during this time.
Journal to work through, understand and release emotions. Re-
member: this, too, shall pass. Contact Elicia for emotional sup-
port at http://eliciamiller.com.

Detoxification Symptoms

• Fatigue
• Headaches during the first three days
• Offensive body odor
• Sleep problems (insomnia or sleeping too much)
• Hunger
• Increased gas from extra vegetable fiber
• Bad breath
Elicia@EliciaMiller.com ©2013 All Rights Reserved. http://EliciaMiller.com 21
• Itchy skin
• Irritability

“There is an Indian belief that everyone is in a house of four

rooms: A physical, a mental, an emotional and a spiritual.
Most of us tend to live in one room most of the time, but un-
less we go into every room everyday, even if only to keep it
aired, we are not complete.”
- Rumer Godden

Step 4: Self-Healing Practices

Our bodies have all the medicine we require, we
just need to learn how to trigger it.

During your detox: circulate, move and release the toxins, as well
as, blocked energy and repressed emotions, through your breath,
blood, lymphatic system, kidneys, skin, liver and colon.
Daily

Drink plenty of filtered water

to cleanse your kidneys.

Take detox herbs and probio-

tics to process toxins through
your liver and eliminate the
waste through your colon.

Elicia@EliciaMiller.com ©2013 All Rights Reserved. http://EliciaMiller.com 22

Stimulate and move the poisons in your lymphatic system, sweat
out the toxins in your tissues and breathe deeply through yoga,
Pilates, exercise, rebounding, dance, sauna, dead sea mineral salt
baths, hydrotherapy (hot shower with a cold rinse) and dry skin
brushing.

Release stress by walking (barefoot) in nature, meditating,

journaling, resting and enjoying life!

Release the burden of the past.

As Needed

Try colon hydrotherapy to wash away the impacted waste,

Candida, parasites, and mucus.

Energy healing, bodywork, CranioSacral Therapy, acupuncture,

chiropractic, massage (lymphatic drainage, reflexology, Thai) all
assist the body in releasing toxins and help to activate your healer
within.

Step 5: Design Your Personal Detox Plan

Journal Your Causes and Intentions

What is causing me stress?

What choices are misaligned with my needs and dreams?

Body – What unnatural/chemical/depleting food, drink,

medication and skin products do I put in and on my body? Do
I have mercury fillings? Do I move, stretch and sweat my body?

Mind – Do I focus on the past and the future? Are my thoughts

(self-talk) negative? Do I have limiting beliefs and question them?
Do I practice being the observer, mindfulness and meditation?

Work – Do I feel drained and stressed? Am I using my gifts? Do I

feel a calling to do something greater? Am I fulfilled? Do I feel
valued and supported? Am I authentic? Am I passionate about my
work?

Home – Is it cluttered? When I walk in the door do I feel over-

whelmed and depressed? How do my things and clothes make me
feel?

Media – How much time do I spend in front of the TV? What do I

watch and read, and why? How often am I checking email/text,
etc.

Relationships – Are my relationships positive and supportive?

Does my partner/friends/family lift me up or keep me stuck? Am I
able to speak my truth?

Elicia@EliciaMiller.com ©2013 All Rights Reserved. http://EliciaMiller.com 25

Personal – What do I do for fun? Are my social
activities healthy? Am I spending time alone to
reflect and connect to my higher self?

What Are You Now Releasing and Embracing?

Take a piece of paper and fold it in half, on the top of the left
side write: What am I releasing? What no longer serves me?

On the top of the right side write: What am I embracing?

How do I want to live?

List all of the things that you are ready to let go of on the left and
then list all of the things you are ready to bring into your life on
the right.

Visualization

Write out your ideal day; how do you feel when you wake up,
what is the first thing you do and say to yourself, what are you
eating, what are you doing to nurture, listen to and support your-
self?

Commitment

What are you now committing to:

14, 21 or 30 day cleanse, food,
exercise, mindfulness, speaking
your truth, breaking through
limiting beliefs, more support?

Holistic Health
“Health and well-being mean more
than just freedom from disease; they
are a radiant manifestation of balance
in body, mind, and spirit. When the
body/mind is balanced, our capacity
for spontaneity, joy and peace increas-
es. We eat food to nourish our bodies,
but every level of our being requires
nourishment from other sources be-
sides food. Your quality of life and
well-being reflects how you are nour-
ished, how you nourish others, and the
way you function in the world.
Impressions - sensory, emotional,
intellectual - are the food of the mind.
We receive a barrage of impressions
from television, computers, music,
movies, books and magazines, and often end up carrying too much
“weight” in our heads. Simplify your life by eliminating anything
that does not promote wholesomeness. You may be surprised to
find that as you clean up your act that you also start feeling bet-
ter. Gradually eliminating whatever is no longer relevant - stuff,
habits, relationships, or beliefs - amounts to trimming the fat off
your lifestyle. Consider what it would be like to live with the
people and things that help you to feel good about yourself. Then
consider the extent to which you are willing to go to make that a
reality.
If you haven’t paid much attention to your health, this is the
time to begin. In attending to the body’s real needs, it is impor-
tant to bring some awareness to what, where, and how you eat.
If you frequently eat in a hurry or “graze” at an open fridge, then
you can be certain that you are also feeding your stress level.
Carefully choosing foods that are natural and wholesome and eat-
ing with intention sends a message to your entire being that it’s
worth nourishing. Maintaining good health also means exercising.
Physical exercise vitalizes the heart and circulatory system and
enhances your general sense of well-being. It clears cobwebs
Elicia@EliciaMiller.com ©2013 All Rights Reserved. http://EliciaMiller.com 28
from an overfull mind by rerouting excess energy from the head
into the body.
Nourishment of the heart calls for healthy relationships in
your life. Relationships require sensitivity to their subtle nuance
and should not be taken for granted. Habitual patterns of relating
lead to indifference, lack of enthusiasm, or an apathetic attitude
that slowly but surely creates disappointment. Nourish your rela-
tionships carefully so that they may provide you and others with
emotional sustenance.
Finally, how do you nourish yourself spiritually? Rest and re-
laxation put us back in touch with ourselves and nature. Make a
conscious choice to tune out external distractions and turn your
full attention inward. By sitting silently, relaxed and comfort-
able, simply observing your breath and your thoughts, you can
cleanse your mind of tensions that deplete well-being. When a
thought arises that grips your attention, relax your breath, let the
tension go and return to neutrality. This is the simplest form of
meditation, and it works. There are many different techniques to
facilitate self-awareness - some very energetic, others more pas-
sive - and it’s wise to experiment to find the way that feels right
for you.
Practicing a consciousness-raising technique with regularity
clears the mind, calms the emotions, and enhances your ability
to feel supported by the flow of change that is Tao.” -Tao Oracle

“I have NEVER felt better, both physically and emotionally. Yes I lost weight,
toned my body and eliminated ALL prescription medications (as they were no
longer necessary). More importantly I have a new sense of peace and content-
ment with who I am and where I am going. I am not afraid to “speak my truth”,
to choose my life fully. This was a direct result of working with Elicia.

I am and will forever be grateful for her service and could not have made these
changes without her expert guidance, support and resources! Worth ten times
the rather modest investment.”
- Richard H. Ross

Acknowledgements, Gratitude & Love
My Fasting Path
I would like to start with acknowledging my brother, Chad Woodford, who
introduced me to my first book on detox, The Tao of Health Sex & Longev-
ity by Daniel Reid in 1995 while I was in college. Stanley Burroughs then
further introduced me to juice fasting through “The Master Cleanser”. And
finally, I would like to thank Loren Lockman, who helped me to experience
the power of water fasting and how drastically different it is to lemon
sugar and juice feasting.

My Business Path
A big shout out “You Rock!” to my first business mentor, Jeffery Gitomer,
who always believed in me and encouraged me to write, even though it
took me 10 years to finally do it. Gratitude to my parents and brother who
asked me for four years when I was going to “get a job” after I left my
successful corporate sales career to teach journaling and detox practices;
which in turn helped me to grow strong in believing in and listening to
myself to follow my heart to Thailand. I know you did it out of love, and
look--I finally have my “shit together”! Thank you to HigherAwareness.com
for your journaling facilitator course in 2007; journaling has remained the
cornerstone of my work and personal transformation.

My Healing Path
This book was a result of all of the juice fasting detox retreat programs I
experienced in Thailand and what I discovered was missing and needed to
support individuals for lasting health and happiness.

Thank you body. Thank you for everything that you do for me, for dialogu-
ing with me, for being so wise. Thank you for always letting me know ex-
actly what I need to know to grow and develop. Thank you for allowing me
to grow. Thank you for doing so much - going through so much - so that I
may grow. Body, you are so smart, my greatest ally. Thank you for every-
thing that you show me. I love you, body. Thank you, body.

I send so much love and gratitude to all of my healers, teachers and

clients who have helped me to heal myself holistically, discover my pur-
pose, spread my wings and fly.

een, Jennifer, Jennette, Bradley, Evelyn and Nadia for being there for me
during a big transitional time last year. To all the people I didn’t mention
who contributed to my journey; you know who you are and how much I ap-
preciate you!

Thank you Universe for communicating through many people along the
way who suggested that I create my own personalized detox programs, re-
treats and holistic directory instead of recommending and promoting oth-
ers.

Finally and always, thank you to my Angels

and Guides for showing me all of the magical
synchronicities that help me to keep the
faith, and assured me that it’s not all up
to me to figure it out and make it happen.
I am loved, supported and guided.

I dedicate this book to Andrew and Jimmie

Walters, who created Frog Call Healing
Retreat in Dahlonega, GA, where I was
inspired to run my own retreats and finish this book.
