THE YEAR
IN REVIEW
A look back at 2018
LOCAL
T
he year 2018 brought substantial snowfall in January closing schools and businesses for
days. In March, students in many DeKalb schools walked out of classes in organized
protests to call attention to safety concerns in schools. As April ushered in warmer
weather, bus drivers for DeKalb County School District protested low pay by organizing a sick-
out that lasted for several days and drew a large amount of media attention.
In May, protests were held in downtown Decatur calling on the county to find a new home
for a Confederate monument placed on the square in the early 1900s. June brought severe storms
that caused widespread damage to many areas of DeKalb County.
In July, drivers in Georgia and DeKalb County had to adjust to a new hands-free phone law
that made it illegal for drivers to hold or handle cell phones while operating a vehicle.
Water billing issues continued throughout the year as the county attempted to reconcile and
correct bills that for some customers of DeKalb Watershed were in the thousands of dollars.
As schools started back in session, studies and football became the focus of many. The
football season ended with the Cedar Grove Saints winning the Class AAA state championship
after defeating Peach County 14-13 on a last second touchdown.
Later in the year, schools in the City Schools of Decatur system as well as several schools in
the DeKalb County School District were placed on lockdown after a series of anonymous threats

were received.
Following are stories that our news staff has identified as being the most important stories of without notice
the year. We hope you appreciate this look back at the events that shaped the year 2018.
