First Second Third I

Instructions: This is an exercise to teach sequencing. It is presented in a figural mode in preparation

for left-to-right reading.
We are beginning at a very elementary level. First, make certain that the students can identify the
objects used. Point to the man. Say, “This is a man.” Point to the woman. Elicit a response; correct
the students if they are incorrect. Point to the tree. Elicit a response.
Once you are assured that the students can correctly identify the objects, go to the next step.

The man is first. The woman is second. And the tree is third.

Now you tell me. The man is____(first). The woman is____(second). And the tree is____(third).

Continue practicing until the students can identify first, second, and third with no mistakes.

Draw a line to the correct place holder each animal is in.

This means first. This means second. This means third.

Draw a line from the animal to the placeholder.

The dog is first. The cat is second. And the frog is third.

Practice until the students can identify the proper position of both the objects and the highlighted
