PROCLAMATION AND INVOCATION

INTRODUCTION
Epiphany means “manifestation.” On this day we celebrate the revelation
of Christ to the Gentiles—that is, to all nations. Some Christian traditions
celebrate three great epiphanies on this day: the magi’s adoration of the
Christ child, Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan River, and his first miracle, in
which he changes water into wine. The word and sacraments are for us the
great epiphany of God’s grace and mercy. We go forth to witness to the
light that shines brightly in our midst.
CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags and
a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed. An
usher will gladly provide you with assistance.
As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate all
cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.
All are invited to stand and may make the sign of the cross,
the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minster begins.

Gracious and holy God, give us diligence to seek you, wisdom to perceive
you, and patience to wait for you. Grant us, O God, a mind to meditate on
you; eyes to be hold you; ears to listen for your word; a heart to love you;
and a life to proclaim you; through the power of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,
our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Let us pray.
O God, on this day you revealed your Son to the nations by the leading of a
star. Lead us now by faith to know your presence in our lives, and bring us
at last to the full vision of your glory, through your Son, Jesus Christ our

FIRST READING: Isaiah 60:1-6

Jerusalem is assured that nations will make a pilgrimage to her, because

the light of God’s presence is in her midst. The bountiful food of the sea
and the profits of international trade will come streaming to Jerusalem and
thereby declare God’s praise.

God’s promise shines bright in the night as magi follow a star to honor a
new king. Strangers from a faraway land, they welcome the long-awaited
messiah of Israel.

who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising,

INVITATION TO COMMUNION

Christ gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to
make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.
(Titus 2:14) Come, behold and receive the Word made flesh.

Lutherans believe, teach and confess that we receive the true Body and
Blood of Christ in Holy Communion. If you desire to pick up the cross and
live in Christ, we hope you will receive with us. Even if you do not feel
prepared to receive the sacrament today we hope you will join us at the
table. Simply hold your hands over your heart and the pastor will give you
a blessing. Pastor will be glad to discuss Holy Communion and Holy
Baptism with you!

receive this sacrament, and give us all the comfort of your abiding presence
through the body and blood of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

BLESSING FOR THE RECENTLY-INSTALLED EXTERIOR LIGHT
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
The star shone bright in the Bethlehem sky.
We now have a light to guide us.
The shepherds ran to see the babe.
We now have a light to guide us.
The magi knelt at the child’s feet.
We now have a light to guide us.
Christ shines with God’s own truth and light.
We have Christ’s Light to guide us.
Beloved children of God, what came into being in Christ was life, and the
life was the light of all people.
May Christ’s Light shine on all who come and go from this place—
worshippers; swing dancers; Overeaters Anonymous and Narcotics
Anonymous; dart ball players; Bible study, sanctuary conversation, and
circle meetings; singers, cellists, bell choir and CGMC musicians;
intergenerational event attendees; our pastor, minister of music,
administrative assistant, children’s minister, custodian; the Alpha course,
Faith Mission servants; those in need and Good Samaritans who assist
them; council members and meeting goers.
Bless the light which now shines in the darkness. May it be Christ’s Light
shining with grace and mercy and filling all with joy and peace.
Amen.

The God of glory dwell in you richly, name you beloved, and shine brightly
on your path; and the blessing of almighty God, the Father, the + Son, and

Adrian of Canterbury, teacher, died around 710 (TFF)

African by birth, Adrian (or Hadrian) worked with Theodore, archbishop of
Canterbury, in developing the church in England. He was director of a
school at which church leaders were trained.
The Altar flowers are administered by the worship committee. The 2019
Altar Flower chart is posted on the bulletin board in the lower lobby and
there is a nearby pocket containing an information sheet for donors to
complete and hand into the office or place in the offering plate for
proper publication in the bulletin.
If you would like to purchase flowers for worship in memory of or in honor
of someone, please sign up. The cost is $35 per arrangement, and checks
