All Families
College Awareness Day is January 11: This day aims to strengthen the college-preparedness
culture in all schools, and help students and families understand that their dream of college is
attainable. On this day, please engage in conversations and activities with your child to inspire
and promote college aspirations. Make college an expectation and connect your child’s
academic course work and interests in and out of class to success in college. Be part of your
child’s school’s activities on College Awareness Day, and work with your child’s teachers and
counselors to encourage your child to begin his/her journey towards college. We encourage
families, if possible, to dress their children in college gear representing their Alma Mater/current
school of an older family member or friend, and to participate in the College Awareness Day
social media challenge by taking a photo of student holding a sign that reads either-#(Insert
Neighborhood)GoesToCollege (ex. #BedStuyGoesToCollege, Class of (insert projected college
graduation year) #CollegeAwarenessDay [ex. Class of 2031, #CollegeAwarenessDay (for a current
5th grade student)]

Here are some great prompts to promote college conversations with your children: •What
colleges have you thought about attending? •What is your favorite subject? Have you thought
about anything you would like to study in college? •What club, activity or sports team would you
be interested in participating in high school? In college? •What kind of events and programs do
you think will help you learn more about your own culture, identity, or community in college? •Do
you know of any scholarships that are available to you now as a middle schooler?

Parents of Students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs): Schools can receive reimbursements
for services that are provided to students, like your child, who have individualized education plans
(IEPs). In order to receive these funds, we need your consent to submit a reimbursement claim to
Medicaid. If your child is enrolled in Medicaid, we also are requesting their Client Identification
Number (CIN). Please click the link below to access the Medicaid Consent and CIN Collection
portal, a secure site where you can share this information using your computer or mobile-device.
The portal is only four screens and should take less than five minutes to complete. You will need your
child’s name, birth date, and NYC Student ID number to access the site. (The NYC Student ID
number is a 9-digit number you can find on your child’s report card.) Medicaid Consent and CIN
Collection Portal: www.nycenet.edu/medicaidconsent If you have any questions or concerns,
please feel free to contact the school. Thank you for your assistance in ensuring that our public

District 22 School News & Community Events
P.S. 152: was pleased to partake in a free student assembly last month. NED’s Mindset
Mission, teaches children to Never give up, encourage others and don’t quit. It was a fun,
interactive show that takes the students on a mission to help NED find his Mindset to never give
up! The children had a wonderful experience. Our PBIS assembly celebrated students of the month
as well as students exhibiting positive behavior and doing good deeds. The children received an
award for their positive behavior. Our students in the Early Childhood Center enjoyed the Green
Meadows Farm animals visit. The children learned about worms, chickens, guinea pigs and
chinchillas.

P.S. 52: On Tuesday, December 11th, members of the P.S. 52 fourth and fifth grade chorus, the P.S.
52 Sheepshead Singers, were invited to perform at the annual NYC DOE Winter Party, hosted by
NYC DOE Chancellor, Richard Carranza at the Tweed Courthouse in Manhattan. The Students
performed for an entire hour several songs, including Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and Sara Bareilles
and Ingrid Michaelson's "Winter Song", as well as several wintertime classics under the direction of
Mr. Mack, our Music Educator & Ensemble Director. With only a short amount of time to prepare for
such an exciting event, the students worked incredibly hard, practicing day and night to be sure
that they would perform their very best. In the end, their performance was a grand success as they
filled the building's massive domed center with a wonderful display of musical talent and superb
ensemble work.

P.S. 236: On Thursday, December
13th all Kindergarten students had
a paint party. An outside vendor
came in and transformed our
Kindergarten students into artists.
Parents and students painted
beautiful winter scenes.

On Friday, December 14th

P.S. 236 celebrated the
holidays with Ugly Holiday
Sweater Day. Staff and
students wore their creative
ugly holiday sweaters. Our
school also had a visit from
the Grinch. The Grinch
visited all the classrooms
and distributed candy
canes. Happy Holidays to everyone from P.S. 236!!

I.S. 14: We are thrilled that Shell Bank Intermediate School, the first to
use a Comfort Dog Program in NYC schools, made the cover of
NYSUT - A Union of Professionals January's Newsletter! Read the
article on page 12/13 here

P.S. 134: Welcome to Family Art Night at P.S.134! Parents created

and experimented in art with their children. Our younger artists had
fun and easy to do projects such as Puppet Making, Paper
Sculpture & Building, and Build a Frame. Our older artists created
Cardboard Creatures, Recycle Ruffle Bracelets, and Wreaths. All
Projects used recycled materials from home.

P.S. 312: On December 19, 2018, P.S. 312 opened our doors to over 400 family members, where the
students performed their annual Winter Concert. It was an amazing performance. The hard work
of all the students and teachers really shined through. The 5th-grade student council at Bergen
Beach School in Brooklyn, New York donned fake mustaches to raise awareness and money
during the month of Movember. Under the guidance of technology teacher, Cory Goodman, 10
young boys and girls led a schoolwide campaign to raise awareness about men’s health, creating
posters, talking to their fellow students and reminding their families and relatives of the need to get
tested for prostate cancer and other men’s diseases. They also collected donations from parents
and students, raising more than $700 over the four-week campaign.

P.S./I.S.206: 7th grade teacher social studies, Joseph Polito celebrated diversity projects and
diversity day in his classroom. View photos here. Congratulations to P.S./I.S. 206 for receiving the
Disney Music in the Schools technical guidance grant, supporting their school's technical theater
goals. The school looks forward to the provided sound and/or lighting equipment training to
support their production of Aladdin. Four students (two general education students and two
special education students) from P.S./I.S. 206 attended the DOE’s Annual Inclusive Education
Student Summit. This event brings together students with and without disabilities from all five
boroughs to learn about inclusion and set the ground work for National Inclusive Schools Week.
Our students engaged in conversations and activities and learned
how to review accessibility through a new app. The students are
going to do a project with the APP over the next few months and
go back to report their progress at the next summit in May.
National Inclusive Schools Week December 3-7, celebrates the
progress schools have made in providing a supportive and quality
education to all students, including those who are
marginalized due to disability, gender, ethnicity, geography and
language. Our 8th grade GEMs were able to visit Pfzier's Center for
Therapeutic Innovation for a Young Women in Bio event about
Discovering Science Careers in Pharma. At this event, students
were able to tour Pfzier's laboratory and meet women scientists to
discuss careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

P.S. 194: Raoul Wallenberg School has been awarded the ArtSPACE grant for an installation of a
dance studio and a portable sound system by the Office of Arts & Special Projects in the Division of
Teaching Learning. The dance studio should be completed by June 30. P.S. 194 teamed up with NY
Cares and volunteers from Nike to brighten up our school. We created murals and decorated our
stairways with inspirational quotes. Thank you New York Cares& Nike! On Friday, November 30th, the
Student Council hosted our Knock Knock, Give a Sock charity sock collection kick off assembly.
They wanted P.S. 194 to find a way to help people during the holiday season so they decided to
have a sock drive. In less than 3 weeks our classes donated 1783 pairs of new socks. The
organization will see that the socks go straight to the people who need them most.

P.S. 277: Jamaica Bay is losing its natural beauty and rich history. Our Assemblywoman Jaime
Williams supports the Jamaica Bay Project by promoting a documentary film to educate our
children to keep the environment clean. A clean environment ensures the continual existence and
survival of all life on Earth. Cleaning the environment reduces pollution, protects unique ecosystems,
prevents the extinction of endangered species and conserves resources, such as water, land and
air. P.S. 277 continues to support this cause and keep the environment clean.
The staff of P.S. 277 wear purple in support of Pancreatic Cancer awareness.

P.S./I.S. 109: What is H.O.W.? H.O.W. is the Hands-on Workshop created by the P.S./I.S. 109 PTA.

Our vision and goals are to encourage learning through the arts. Art is a universal language and we
believe most students can identify with it. Our goal is to bring students, parents and teachers
together in a fun learning environment. Parents are welcome to attend and learn some fun creative
ideas to do at home with their child.

P.S. 315: On December 20, 2018, P.S. 315 put on a Holiday Dance Show for students, parents and
friends. The classes performed to the songs “Holiday Traditions”, “Must Be Santa”, “Frosty the
Snowman”, “Jingle Bells”, “Let’s Celebrate”, “Hip-Hop Jingles and “Merry Christmas & Happy
Holidays.” On December 21, 2018, the fourth grade classes of P.S. 315 performed their

City Ballet. Class 4-401 danced
to “Sugar Plum Fairy and Her
Cavalier,” 4-416 danced to
“Nutcracker and Marie Depart
for the Pine Forest,” 4-413
danced to “Waltz of the
Snowflakes,” 4-411 danced to
“Marie’s Dream,” and both 4-

P.S. 195: In lieu of a traditional craft during our in class holiday party, one of our 3rd grade classes,
created holiday cards through Cards for Hospitalized Kids. The students wrote beautiful,
inspirational messages to children who are in the hospital. They reminded them to be brave and
strong. We mailed them this afternoon and are looking forward to hearing back from the children
that received our cards. Cards for Hospitalized Kids(CFHK) is an internationally recognized
charitable organization that spreads hope, joy & magic to hospitalized kids across America
through uplifting, handmade cards. For more info visit http://www.cardsforhospitalizedkids.com/

Jackie and Warren Hance, are parents of Emma, Alyson, and Katie, who died tragically in a car
accident on the Taconic State Parkway in New York State on July 26, 2009. Since losing their
daughters, they formed the Hance Family Foundation, whose mission is so vital to them no single
word can describe it: To honor the lives of their three beautiful girls, they are sharing innovative self-
esteem educational programming. They have chosen to focus on how their daughters lived,
rather than how they died. PS 195 teachers are in training seminars by Beautiful Me counselors to
learn how to educate females by promoting the development of, self-esteem, self-advocacy, self-
confidence, leadership of females and the prevention of bullying. It is an empowering workshop
for females. Some of our students were in on the first seminar and loved it.

At our December Principals Conference, Superintendent Bove discusses district trends, mid-year
check up on goals with emphasis on the goal of inclusion and culturally responsive
instruction. Principal Robert Bonilla explained to principals his template for his Principal PPO. PS/IS
206’s Principal Quigley demonstrated how information from all academic, visual and performing
arts D22 ambassador meetings are turn-keyed by staff through linked pages on their school
website at PSIS206K.com.

P.S. 222: Class 4-409 are in the giving spirit this holiday season--and gave back to our community. Ms.
Tasso and Ms. Crowley coordinated a special event for the local Guild for Exceptional Children.
Students from the Guild were invited to P.S. 222 to hear Class 4-409 perform holiday songs and songs
from their Unit of Study under the direction of Mr. Luft. Following the performance, Ms. Holske, our art
teacher, led both classes in a winter art project. Students learned the best gifts are free--the sharing
of time, talents and friendship. P.S. 222 was fortunate that Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein
selected our school to receive free arts education programming from the Brooklyn Arts Council-
Global Rhythms. Four fifth grade classes were selected to work with a teaching artist to learn about
more about music. Today, the Michael Davis Band performed for our students. Classes 317, 327, 407
and 424 sang and danced. Ms. Leary and Lapidus served as back up dancers and back up
singers. Next week, our students will work with the teaching artist to compose their own songs. Thank
you to Assemblywoman Weinstein and The Brooklyn Arts Council for this wonderful opportunity.

P.S. 254: It was a great day at P.S. 254 with members of Premier League and EVERFI’s
#CompassionProject #SEL curriculum. Students defined empathy, compassion and demonstrated
and discussed their interactive digital course. Afterwards students practiced soccer drills with Premier
League members. Premier League Primary Stars program provides new teaching resources focusing
on Health and Wellness and Social and Emotional learning skills. Read more about their day and
program here

P.S. 203: The Student Government members are selling novelty
items to raise awareness about adolescent with mental health
challenges. Proceeds from the sales will go towards purchasing
gifts for teens hospitalized at Kings County over the holidays. The
purpose of the Honor Roll Program is to recognize and honor
students who have attained outstanding academic success and
to provide positive reinforcement that inspires all students to
strive even harder and perform at their highest level in all
subjects at the end of each marking period during the school
year. Students earned silver or gold honor roll for the First
Marking Period are honored at an assembly and then get to
enjoy a hearty breakfast with the principal, parents/guardians,
and some of their classmates.
Our Student Government under the guidance of Ms. Stein was
able to brighten up the lives of many members of the
community this holiday season. They demonstrated a generous
spirit during their annual food drive by donating their time
and by collecting non-perishable food that will go to
help the members of the community manage on low
income or in a time of crisis. Student Government
members gathered after school to organize and pack
the food and on November 22nd, all of the food which
was donated by the P.S. 203 families and staff was
delivered to The Mary Queen of Heaven Food Pantry.

I.S. 240: Think finding fun AND educational trips for math class is hard? Think again!
Some of the 8th grade students at I.S. 240 Magnet School OF STEM were treated to a tour at the M.C.
Escher exhibit at Industry City today. Escher is best known for his prints of mathematically and
geometrically inspired structures and forms. His most imaginative works have the ability to bend
reality and require the viewer to see the images from new perspectives. Way to keep math class fun!!

P.S. 217: Family Literacy Night was
celebrated on the evening of November
29th, thus giving the National Family
Literacy Night - November its grand finale.
We went Around the World – the theme of
the event, with over 15 teachers, 15+
stations and way over 200 people, so yes,
this evening of reading, writing and
storytelling was an incredibly successful
event. Story Time and Puppet Making,
Literacy Games such as A Story Grows,
Read Alouds followed by creative activities
suitable for ENL children, New York Times
Cover Art Project, Cootie Catchers for Reading, Make Your Own
Bookmark, Poetry and Art, Write Your Family Book were some of the
activities that delighted our readers, writers and their families. And
when writing on a piece of paper was not enough, our walls made
it for a canvas. No, not the graffiti style, the butcher paper saved
our walls and gave the little hands a huge space to express their
creativity. Family reading time was possible in a quiet room where
the carefully curated books on display allowed for imaginary trips
“around the world”. Special guests from the Cortelyou Branch of
Brooklyn Public Library offered valuable resources and helped
many parents and students apply for their first library card. To top
this off, the book swap filled everyone’s hands with great books to
take home. Nobody left empty handed and everyone enjoyed an
amazing night surrounded by books and friends.

P.S. 255: Students delighted their audience at the Holiday Extravaganza! Chorus, Dance Company,
clubs and a variety of instruments were highlighted in a sensational performance! We thank our
music teacher, Ms. DiPaola and dance teacher, Ms. Skerbec for enriching our students through the
arts!

P.S. 193: The P.S. 193 community enjoyed a wonderful winter concert hosted by our very own chorus
and dance classes. Performances included numbers celebrating Kwanzaa, Christmas and
Hanukkah. During the concert, parents and students learned about the history of each of the
different celebrations. It was a great concert enjoyed by all who attended.

P.S. 139 Ugly Sweater Contest

P.S. 315: The classes of P.S. 315 decorated their

classroom doors inspired by countries from around the
world. Each door showed an enormous amount of
creativity from the students. Their artwork will be on
display for the holiday season.
