Dear Ms Haspel:
The purpose of this communication is to praise the qualities of the Italian civil servant,
Franco Gabrielli—now administrator of the Italian police. Because of the tenuous state of
the Italian political setting, and in the event of still another Italian political collapse that
would cause the appointment of again another unelected “technical” government, I cannot
think of any other Italian government offcial who possesses the savoir-faire to manage the
most challenging, multiplex Ministero dell'Interno that is charged with Italian public order
now exhibiting anarchical, destabilizing tendencies.
Since 1 January 1946, Italy has had a total of 66 governments—each an average length of
less than one year (As a being is, so it acts). The present minister dell'Interno has predicted
that the existing Italian government will live on for thirty years! Such political phantasy is
commonplace today in Italian “politics” simply because political factions here are vying to
increment their liabilities counting on “playing chicken” and speculating that the European
Union would bend over backwards to keep Italy in the orb of the EU.
I respectfully request, that you, directress Haspel, speak up for Franco Gabrielli, and insist
that others in the Department of State are made aware of his extraordinary qualities.
Cordially...
