THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
Dear Parishioners,
The word EPIPHANY means a revelation,
a manifestation, a making known. So today
we celebrate the making known of Jesus to
the Nations. The Magi, the Wise men,
symbolises all peoples of different races and
times. They were ‘WISE’ for many reasons.
They were able to ‘read the signs of the
times’, as they studied the universe. The
interest in astronomy dates back to an
ancient time when people were able to plot
the course of the moon, the stars and the
earth. They were able to calculate the cycles
that give us the seasons of the year. They
could make journeys by land or sea guided
by the stars in the sky, long before modern
technology. What made them really wise,
was that the recognised the Saviour, Jesus
Christ, as an infant in a stable in Bethlehem.
St. Matthew is the only Evangelist who tells
the story of the wise men; mysterious
characters from the East and wise enough to
ask the correct questions of those who knew
the promises of the Messiah from the Old
Testament.
Tradition has named them, Melchior,
Casper and Balthasar. People joke about the
“impractical” gifts which they brought!
What a shame! The gifts of gold, myrrh and
frankincense have a deeper meaning than
the usual gifts exchanges! The gold is a gift
fit for a King – Jesus came to establish the
kingdom of God; the incense reveals that
this is no ordinary infant, but God’s son who
came to redeem all of humanity; the
ointment, myrrh, is a foretelling of the
passion and death of our Saviour; his body
will need to be anointed after his death.
The symbols of the gifts take us into a
spiritual dimension. In our Liturgy, these
elements are part of our rituals, taking us
beyond our human vision, into a deeper
relationship with the God who has become
one of us, as a baby in a stable in Bethlehem.
Our task today is to tell the world of this
message of salvation. We embrace the
message of this Feast of the Epiphany and
manifest by the manner of our lives that
God-is-with-us, Emmanuel.
What a profound and challenging New
Year Resolution it is to continue proclaiming
the message of God’s love for us by sending
his only Son into our human world. He
loved us so much that he became one of us.
As a result we need to love ourselves, not in
a selfish way, but treasuring who we are.
Can we have enough self-love and
confidence to help us fight the many battles
of life? May we have enough love in our
hearts to tolerate the faults and failings of
others … that we have a DESIRE and a
determination to do the little things as best
we can … then somehow other items fall
into place in a remarkable way. We really
need to believe that God is working through
us, even when we are not aware!

FAREWELL
The farewell to Barbara Kentish, our field
worker, will place here in the parish hall at
6pm on Friday 11 January.
Having contributed so much to Justice and
Peace issues over many years,
Barbara deserves a worthy ‘send-off’.
It would be nice if parishioners could attend
this event! For catering purposes, could you
please put you name on the list provided at
the back of the church.

This course offers an insight into the lives of
various women and men in the Bible,
specifically from the Old Testament.

Make time to spend a moment alone with God
in thanksgiving, prayer and adoration. The

SURPLUS CHRISTMAS GIFTS and CAKE
SALE
We all know it is difficult to buy presents
for friends who have everything!!
We plan to hold a sale of Surplus Gifts and
Cake Sales to help us raise fund for the
London Catholic Worker.
The sale will be on
Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th January
after all the Masses.
If you have any Surplus Christmas gifts you
would like to donate, please leave them in
the Church or the Parish Office.
Parishioners are also invited to support
the event by bringing in cakes and buying.
It would be much appreciated.

One thing is certain: good politics is at the
service of peace. It respects and promotes
fundamental human rights, which are at the
same time mutual obligations, enabling a
bond of trust and gratitude to be forged
between present and future
generations….today more than ever, our
societies need “artisans of peace” who can be
messengers and authentic witnesses of God
the Father, who wills the good and the
happiness of the human family.
There will be a Retiring Collection to help
the works of PAX Christi.
