1 Network Element Overview
1.1 Enclosure
The 8615 Smart Router enclosure can be installed into a 19 inch rack requiring 1 RU
(44.25 mm/1.74 in) of space. Installation into a 23 inch or ETSI 600 mm rack is supported with
additional rack side adapters. The outer dimensions of the enclosure are 441 mm/17.36 in x 44
mm/1.73 in x 300 mm/11.81 in (w x h x d). The air inlet holes are on the left side of the enclosure
and the outlet holes are on the right hand side of the enclosure. The side adapters are removable. All
the connectors including the one for power are on the front side of the enclosure.
1.1.1 Baseboard
The 8615 Smart Router is a stand-alone NE and uses a baseboard architecture. This means that
the functionality including NE interfaces have been integrated into a single main baseboard. All
interfaces are accessible from the NE front panel.
18
1 Network Element Overview
1.1.2 Interfaces
Two 8615 Smart Routers can be stacked together using a dedicated interface and cable. This
interconnects the forwarding NPUs of the two NEs using proprietary internal direct link (45
Gbps) throughput. The interface also carries control bus and synchronization signals. 8615 Smart
Router stacked forms a single NE with double forwarding capacity and hardware redundancy.
Forwarding plane protection is implemented using available traffic protection mechanisms, like ELP
or RSVP-TE 1:1. In the case of ELP, the Ethernet ports that are members of the protection group
must reside in different members of the 8615 Smart Router stacked.
Stacking provides also full control plane protection (CU 1+1) between the two network elements.
For more information, refer to the 8600 Smart Routers Equipment Management Configuration
Guide, chapter CU 1+1 Equipment Protection.
8000 Intelligent Network Manager considers 8615 Smart Router stacked as one network element
with two LUs, providing traffic and forwarding functionality and CUs, providing control
functionality.
19
1 Network Element Overview
• Rerouting the traffic destined to ports in the failed 8615 Smart Router
• Performing CU switchover to the other 8615 Smart Router
1.1.4 Cooling
The 8615 Smart Router is forced convection-cooled equipment. Fresh air is taken from the left side
of the enclosure and blown through the baseboard and the line modules. The outlet air leaves the
enclosure on the right hand side. Forced cooling is needed to dissipate the generated heat load and
to maintain the components within their operating limits. In case of a failure in one fan the others
will maintain adequate cooling for a limited time.
The temperature warning is raised if the CPU temperature exceeds 87 °C/188.6 °F or the OCXO
temperature exceeds 84 °C/183.2 °F. The warning indicates that the operating ambient temperature is
high and about to exceed the allowed operating range. The equipment will go to reset mode after 15
minutes if the measured temperature is 92 °C/197.6 °F or higher for CPU or 89 °C/192.2 °F or higher
for OCXO or immediately if it is 102 °C/215.6 °F or higher for CPU or 114 °C/237.2 °F or higher
for OCXO. This is to protect the equipment from permanent damage caused by high temperature.
The rotation speed control of the fans is based on the temperature values measured from the
baseboard. The fan speed is adjusted smoothly between 30% and 100% of the maximum rotation
speed. The rotation speed of the fans will increase to maintain the required operating temperature.
The high temperature warning will occur when the equipment is used at high ambient temperature.
If the warning occurs and the equipment is not used at high ambient temperatures, it might be
advisable to change the air filter or check to see if some air blockage has occurred at the air inlet or
outlet area of the enclosure. At start up the fan speed will vary while system boot up is completed
and the fan control algorithm settles on the correct speed for the conditions.
Air Filtering
The air filter prevents dust from entering the enclosure in order to maintain adequate cooling of
internal components. The air filter is located in the inlet side of the fan module. All empty line or
power module slots must be shielded with a cover plate to ensure adequate cooling of the system.
20
1 Network Element Overview
The fan module and air filter can be replaced or removed on-the-fly without disturbing traffic
through the network element. Please refer to 8600 Smart Routers Hardware Installation Guide
for more details.
Fan Module
The fan module is located on the left hand side of the NE and contains five parallel fans. The
baseboard is able to control and monitor the operation of the fans. The rotation speed is adjusted
according to the temperature inside the enclosure, and in case of the failure of one fan the other four
will maintain adequate cooling for a limited time.
The fan driving circuits are located on the baseboard. The baseboard controls the fan rotating speed
via PWM control signal and monitors the fan rotation speeds.
1.2 NE Powering
The 8615 Smart Router can be powered with a DC48 power module (support for -48 Vdc nominal
input voltage).
The NE provides two slots for DC48 power modules. If redundant power feeding is required, it is
achieved by installing a DC48 power module in both power module slots.
21
1 Network Element Overview
8615 Smart Router stacked requires that both 8615 Smart Routers are powered separately. For fully
redundant set-up, power redundancy needs to be applied for both NEs separately, i.e. both 8615
Smart Routers have both power modules connected to two separate power supplies.
1.3 NE Synchronization
The 8615 Smart Router has an integrated clock generator that is located on the baseboard and
distributes the clock signal to every interface. The clock level is according to [G.8262], [G.813]
option 1 or [GR-1244] Stratum-3. An Oven Controlled Oscillator (OCXO) is provided to meet
Telcordia requirements [GR-1244] for Stratum-3 level clock holdover frequency stability at variable
temperature.
The NE provides one SCI and one SCO, which are contained in the same RJ-48c connector. The SCI
is intended to connect an external reference clock to the NE. Within the external synchronization
interface it is possible to configure [G.703] 2048 kHz synchronization clock mode, 1544 kbps
(DS1) or 2048 kbps (E1).
The Node Clock PLL allows synchronization to be derived from any clock source interface or
external synchronization interface that is at least an SEC or Stratum-3 level clock. The clock quality
level requirements for Ethernet Equipment Clock (EEC) synchronization function are specified in
[G.8262].
The NE can be synchronized with a clock derived from any of the following input signals:
• SCI
• Framed E1
• 2048 kHz
• Framed T1
• PPS interface
• Ethernet interfaces
• 10GBASE-R
• 100/1000BASE-X
• 100BASE-TX/1000BASE-T.
The selected reference signal must fulfil the clock characteristics mentioned in the specifications.
For more detailed information about 8615 Smart Router synchronization features, refer to 8600
Smart Routers Synchronization Configuration Guide.
22
2 Baseboard
2 Baseboard
2.1 Overview
The baseboard is a central element of the 8615 Smart Router. It provides the main NE functionality
with fixed Ethernet interfaces and other interfaces like the Alarm and Timing interfaces. A separate
power module is used to feed the NE.
The 8615 Smart Router baseboard is mainly comprised of a processor environment, switch/routing
engine and physical interfaces.
2.3 Operation
The function of the baseboard is to concentrate packet based data received from any interface to
NPU and vice versa. The NPU performs layer 2 and layer 3 packet switching, packet forwarding,
packet filtering and traffic management functions. The CPU subsystem is used to control the
baseboard functionality.
23
2 Baseboard
The CPU subsystem has an integrated multicore processor with a 32-bit RISC processor core with
useful internal features, such as independent on-chip cache and memory management unit.
• DDR3 DRAM
• Boot and application FLASH.
The application software is stored in the FLASH memory. Thus, it is possible to update the software
in the field when new software feature packs become available. Similarly, the card and interface
parameters are stored in FLASH, so those are restored after reset.
24
2 Baseboard
RTC
The real time clock has backup for short power breaks. The time is kept for at least 20 hours (at 20
ºC/68 ºF).
A/D Converter
There is an analog to digital converter on the baseboard. It is used to measure and monitor operating
voltages and temperature.
The NPU performs layer 2 and layer 3 packet switching, packet forwarding, packet filtering and
traffic management functions. As a buffer and parameter memory the NPU uses DDR3 type of
memory. There is also a TCAM memory for IP and ACL lookups attached to the NPU block.
The timing block consist of Node Clock PLL, OCXO and External Synchronization Interface
(SCI/SCO). The specifications for the EEC synchronization function are specified in [G.8262]. It is
possible to configure External Synchronization Interface to [G.703] 2048/1544 kHz synchronization
clock mode, 1544 kbps (DS1) or 2048 kbps (E1).
Node clock PLL allows synchronization to be derived from any fixed Ethernet interface and External
Synchronization Interface that is at least a SEC or Stratum-3 level clock.
The baseboard has several local, integrated power supplies (DC/DC converters). Those generate
lower voltages which are needed locally within different blocks and are not generated by the DC48
power module.
During the boot up, certain self tests are performed to verify that the basic functionality is OK.
During normal operation CPU monitors (in the background):
• Operating voltages
• Cooling fans and temperature inside the NE
• Memory access (DRAMs, FLASH)
The NE has a watchdog to reset itself in case of a fatal failure in the CPU subsystem.
25
2 Baseboard
2.4 Interfaces
An interface provides a physical connection to the network. Each interface has its own media-specific
components such as a framer or MAC and physical media interface device or transceiver.
The 8615 Smart Router provides several fixed interfaces that are integrated on the baseboard of
the NE.
The 8615 Smart Router provides twenty-six independent fixed Ethernet user interfaces. The two
fixed interfaces in group M0 are SFP+ optical 10GBASE–R Ethernet interfaces. The 16 fixed
interfaces in group M1 are 100/1000BASE-X Ethernet interfaces. The last eight fixed interfaces in
group M1 are electrical RJ-45 100BASE-TX/1000BASE-T Ethernet interfaces.
The electrical Ethernet ports are designed for intra-building use only. They are not meant
for external connections.
Optical Interfaces
26
2 Baseboard
Electrical Interfaces
8615 Smart Router stacking interface allows connecting two 8615 Smart Routers with an external
cable forming a redundant pair, 8615 Smart Router stacked, providing protected LU and CU
functionalities. 8615 Smart Router stacking interface is Coriant proprietary. The stacking interface,
located in the front panel, has two connectors of type the miniSAS-HD.
Do not use standard miniSAS-HS cable, since it may damage the 8615 Smart Router.
The external alarm interface is used for user configurable outputs and inputs. It provides an output
with solid state relay contacts and four inputs for external voltage free contacts, for example relays.
Typically an input could be connected to a power off relay in an external local device, enabling the
user to monitor possible remote faults.
An output is similar to a conventional relay. It has three pins; common (COM), normally closed
(NC) and normally open (NO) pins. The configuration is carried through CLI or 8000 Intelligent
Network Manager. If the NE is not powered, there is a connection between the NC and COM pins.
27
2 Baseboard
The input consists of a comparator and protecting circuits. When the input is connected below the
threshold voltage, for example, to ground by an external device (relay), the state of the input is
considered to be closed, otherwise open.
Console
The 8615 Smart Router can be locally controlled and managed through the asynchronous serial
interface (RS-232 type).
The 8615 Smart Router provides a Station Clock Input and Output (SCI/SCO) interface on an RJ-48c
connector. The same connector provides both SCI and SCO pins and should be wired according to
the pin chart table in chapter 2.6.3 Station Clock Input and Output Interface. SCI is intended to be
connected to an external reference clock source and the SCO outputs the NE clock to the next device.
The E1 timing is 2048 kHz [G.703] clock or 2048 kbps signal, the T1 timing is 1544 kbps DS1 signal
with a clock rate of 1544 kHz. The interface impedance is 120 ohms for E1 and 100 ohms for T1.
When connecting the station clock interface to a network element that has separate ports for SCI and
SCO and/or 75 Ohm terminations, such as the 8660 Smart Router, a [G.703] impedance balun must
be used to split the SCI and SCO signals and convert the impedance.
When connecting the SCI/SCO interface to a corresponding interface on another NE, e.g. another
8615 Smart Router, an E1/T1 cross over cable can be used. Coriant recommends building a custom
cable using only the required pins for this connection.
WARNING: When using an E1/T1 cross-over cable to provide timing between 8615 Smart
Routers using the station clock interface, it is important to prevent timing loops due to invalid
configurations.
The station clock interface can be connected to two simultaneous pieces of equipment, for instance,
to receive a signal from a BITS clock to the 8615 Smart Router and then forward the signal to
another NE. In this case, the SCI of the 8615 Smart Router would connect to the BITS clock and
the SCO would connect to the other NE. To connect the station clock interface to two pieces of
equipment, one of the following alternatives can be used:
2.4.5 Pulse-per-Second
The front panel has also the Time of Day and Pulse Per Second (PPS) interfaces in a RJ-45 connector.
28
2 Baseboard
For detailed information on the transceivers supported in 8600 Smart Routers, refer to 8600 Smart
Routers Hardware Installation Guide.
The external alarm interface is used for NE alarms and user configurable output and inputs. It
provides output with solid state relay contacts and inputs for external voltage free contacts, for
example relays.
The user configurable output is similar to conventional relay and have three pins; common (Com),
normally closed (NC) and normally open (NO) pins. The configuration is carried through CLI or
8000 Intelligent Network Manager.
Fig. 9 Input
In addition to the outputs, there are four user configurable inputs which consist of comparator and
protecting circuits. When the input is connected below the threshold voltage, for example, to ground
by an external device (relay), the state of the input is considered to be closed, otherwise open.
The user is able to configure a possible consequence action if the input state changes, i.e. what
kind of an alarm is risen. A typical application would be, for example, site intrusion detection or
site power supply problems.

3.1.1 Overview
The 8615 Smart Router can be fed by -48 Vdc battery voltage. There are two slots on the front panel
of the NE for one or two DC48 power modules. If fully redundant power feeding is required, it
is achieved by installing a DC48 power module in both power module slots; however, a single
supply can be used if redundancy is not required. An empty power module slot must be shielded
with a cover plate.
The nominal input voltage is -48 Vdc. The DC48 power module has a EMI filtering, protection
circuitry and hold-up capacitors. The main isolated DC/DC converter is located on the baseboard.
The output of the DC48 power module is used to supply the baseboard via the power backplane
module where the on board operating voltages are derived by DC/DC converters.
3.1.2 Interfaces
The input connector is located on the front side of the DC48 power module. The output voltage
and I2C-bus are connected from the DC48 power module to the baseboard through the power
backplane module.
3.1.3 Operation
The input voltage is fed through the input filter and fuse to the input capacitors. The DC48 power
module also includes an inrush current limiter and transient overvoltage protection. There is no
active current sharing between the two DC48 power modules. One DC48 power module is able
to supply the whole current required by the 8615 Smart Router.

3 Power Supply
The following figure shows the DC48 power module front panel.
On the DC48 power module there is a voltage monitor for input voltage detection and a LED for
the input. If the input voltage after the fuse is missing or too low, an alarm is forwarded to the
baseboard, and a LED indicates the input voltage status.

4 Technical Specifications
Check that the operational temperature range of the SFP module is suitable for the installation
environment. Note that the temperature of the SFP case can be approximately 15 degrees
higher than the ambient temperature. For more information on the allowed SFP case
temperature range see chapter Pluggable Transceivers in the document 8600 Smart Routers
Hardware Installation Guide.
3There should be no need for a fuse change. The SMD fuses are on the DC48 Power Module and DC48 Power Module PCB and changing the fuses
is allowed only for Coriant Customer Service (please contact http://www.coriant.com/services_support).

4 Technical Specifications
The 8615 Smart Router can be used at up to +55 °C/+149 °F ambient temperature, in which case the
temperature of the enclosure can be high too. A marking required by safety standard [IEC 60950-1]
for surfaces exceeding +70 °C/+158 °F is attached to such equipment that may exceed this limit.
The 8615 Smart Router must be installed in a location that is accessible only to service personnel or
specially trained users (restricted access location as defined in [IEC 60950-1]). It must be ensured
that unauthorized persons cannot access the installation.
