Asian Economics Individual Assignment Page 1 of 2

LEARNING OUTCOME
Students should be able to identify and critically assess the various factors leading to growth
and decline in a variety of Asian economies.

QUESTION
The total mark for this assignment is 100, which contributes to 60 per cent of the total
module assessment.
The withdrawal of United States under President Donald Trump from the Trans-Pacific
Partnership Agreement (TPPA) effectively rendered the trade pact defunct. However, the 11
remaining signatories salvaged the TPPA in the form of the Comprehensive and Progressive
Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), also known as TPP-11.
Following ratification by Australia, the CPTPP will now come into force on 30 December
2018 among the six initial signatories Mexico, Japan, Singapore, New Zealand, Canada and
Australia.
Earlier, Japanese Prime Minister Abe commented that without the US, the TPP (and
consequently CTPP) is meaningless. Nevertheless, Japan was the second country to ratify the
CPTPP in July 2018. Malaysian PM Mahathir has also expressed reservations for the CPTPP.
Critically analyse the CPTPP and recommend whether Malaysia should ratify the CPTPP.
