About RSTW 2018

To highlight the science and technology advocacy in the countryside, the Department of
Science and Technology (DOST VI) gears up for the conduct of the 2018 Regional Science and
Technology Week (RSTW) which commences on August 29-31, 2018 at Robinsons Place
Roxas Capiz.

Bannered with the theme, “Science for the People”, the RSTW is institutionalized to provide a
holistic avenue to experience how S&T works in creating huge impacts to people’s lives. This
also marks the strong commitment of the science community in pursuing collective expertise
and innovations pertinent to the development endeavors of the government.

DOST VI Regional Director Rowen Gelonga expressed that several activities are lined up to
showcase DOST’s innovative programs and services. Among of which are the S&T Exhibits
featuring new technologies on disaster resilience, support to industry and MSMEs, agriculture
and fisheries.

DOST-assisted products under the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP)
will also be highlighted through the Tek-Tienda MSME Product Fair.

Other important activities of the RSTW include: (insert activities)

The regional celebration is anchored with the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW),
founded in 1982 through Proclamation No. 2214.

Objectives:

 To showcase the significant science and technology trends, developments and


breakthroughs as well as the accomplishments and beyond of DOST;

 To increase awareness about SETUP assistance, technical services and programs


available and implemented in the regions;

 To encourage and assist MSMEs to adopt technological innovations to improve their


products, services, operations and increase their productivity and competitiveness;

 To promote research and development in the region and to encourage more


participation of researchers and inventors in the conduct of RICE;

 To promote interaction, linkages, collaboration, and coordination, to contribute to the


development of a competent and competitive science and technology community among
technology generators, business firms, business support organizations, and academe;
 To increase the level of awareness of Western Visayas people on the different
scholarship programs offered by DOST and encourage them to pursue S&T-related
courses; and,
 To promote S&T appreciation and disaster consciousness to the people of Western
Visayas.

The 2018 RSTW Major Components:

 S&T EXHIBITS
These showcase the S&T transformations, trends, developments, breakthroughs,
products, and services from DOST agencies, other government offices, academe and
the private sector in the form of information boards to be displayed at the venue.
Likewise, the exhibit will feature DOST flagship program – SETUP. It will be a “total
learning experience” for the viewer since there will be audio-visual presentations,
technology clinic and interactive activities in addition to infographics and exhibit
materials assuring viewers, visitors (mostly MSMEs) an extraordinary experience and
with an information value that could inspire them to adopt S&T innovations as a way of
improving the lives of people, business and communities.

 MSME PRODUCT FAIR


DOST-SETUP aims to support the marketing and sustain the growth of micro small and
medium enterprises (MSMEs). This activity showcases and intends to promote the best
products of DOST-assisted MSMEs in Western Visayas. Stalls will be provided for the
firms to introduce and promote their products to the public.

 REGIONAL SETUP SUMMIT


The event aims to provide a venue for DOST VI SETUP clients to create network and
linkages. Highlights of the activity include the sharing of best practices and awarding of
successful SETUP adopters.

 IN TOUCH WITH EXCELLENCE


This event recognizes the DOST-SEI scholars who graduated with academic excellence.
Likewise, it acknowledges the pertinent accomplishment of scholar-graduates who
achieved significant milestones after graduation.

 FORUM ON DISASTER RISK REDUCTION MANAGEMENT


In time with the celebration of National Disaster Consciousness Month this July, this
activity aims to create intensive disaster awareness and preparedness. DOST VI will be
inviting a keynote speaker who can effectively inspire and increase the awareness of the
Western Visayas people for a better appreciation of the government’s disaster risk
reduction programs.
