Characteristics and Functions of Culture


1. Culture is a social and a product of
behavior.
2. Culture varies from society to society.
3. Culture is shared.
4. Culture is learned.
5. Culture is transmitted among
members of society.
6. Culture is gratifying.
7. Culture defines situations.
8. Culture defines attitudes, values
and goals.
9. Culture defines myths, legends
and the supernatural.
10. Culture provides behavior
patterns.
Humans as social beings have the
capacity to generate meaning from
their surrounding. Meaning is important
because it is the basic of actions
toward or against specific elements of
the environment.
Rules invisible hand of society

-rules are guides in the performance of


roles and everyday actions and
interactions. A lot of difficult situations
are made simpler by written and visible
rules. The situation is different however,
in cases where rules are invisible and
unwritten.
Written Rules – are easily seen and
hence are easily observed and
obeyed.
Unwritten Rules – these rules that aren’t
necessarily laws but we follow them on
day to day basis.
Basic Rules of Society
1. Speak right
2. Act with honesty and integrity
3. Respect others
4. Do kindness for others
5. Study wisdom
6. Work for a cause
7. Be humble
8. Pray
9. Make daily Accounting
10. Be real with God and with life
A society is an organized group of
individuals. A culture is organized
group of learned responses.
One does not or cannot exist
without others.
“there can be no culture without
society and there are known
human societies that do not
exhibit culture”.
