a+u 573 - Adolf Loos. From Interior To Urban City

a+u Publishing Co. Ltd. 2018 no ISBN 28822
Pb 23x29cm 192pp col ills £30

The second of a two-part series on Adolf Loos, "From Interior to Urban City" introduces 36
various works divided into four chapters: "Residential Addition and Alternation Plans", "Interior
Design", "Collective Housing", and "Mixed-use Facilities". Although most of the housing and
mixed-use projects are unbuilt, it includes new models, drawings, and graphics based on original
sketches, photographs, and previous research, which in turn offer insight into how Loos's
complex three-dimensional spaces are seen in a variety of typologies. Maps and a chronology of
the architect's projects complete the issue, guest edited by Yoshio Sakurai, Tokyo University
professor and an expert on Loos.

AADCU 2018 ISBN 9780692917947 Acqn 28830
Hb 22x27cm 778pp col ills £117.50

This formidable monograph of Neil M. Denari Architects can be viewed as a point of departure for
examining architecture's role in the contemporary world. It contains an accumulation of material
that has evolved over time, the majority of which has never been published, and offers both a rich
history of projects and an extraordinarily in-depth examination of the firm's practice. The book
arranges selected projects, buildings, concepts, references, arguments, and sensibilities (all
together classified as "things") chronologically, from the beginning of the century until the present,
and its content must be understood as a mix of media types that are split between the real and
the imaginary.

Application
Toto 2018 ISBN 9784887063747 Acqn 28947
Pb 13x19cm 456pp col ills £42.75

Tokyo-based architect Ryuji Fujimura approaches his field as creative relationships between
knowledge and form (the materialisation of knowledge), thereby examining and exploring all
aspects of design as the prototype of architectural thinking. This volume features Fujimura's
recent architectural designs and essays, tracing his attempts to redefine architecture as a
dynamic intellectual tool for the realisation of more tolerant societies that appreciate diversity. It is
set against the background of today's social context, where people fluctuate between democracy
and populism, while algorithms and artificial intelligence handle an ever-increasing volume of
information.

In 1974, Reinjan Mulder placed a coarsely-woven grid on top of a map of the Netherlands and set
off to photograph the 52 resulting intersections. His aim was to capture the objective reality of the
Netherlands, uncoloured by traditions, accessibility, and beauty ideals. The project was exhibited
at the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum 42 years later, and was re-photographed by photographer Cleo
Wachter, on request of Government Advisor for the Physical Living Environment Berno
Strootman. Working with unparalleled precision, Wachter succeeded in contributing her own
artistic perspective and completed the re-photography project in 2017. The two photo series are
now combined in this book.

a+u Publishing Co. Ltd. 2018 ISBN 9784900212244 Acqn 28990
Pb 22x22cm 152pp col ills £38.95

Part of the fascination of washi (traditional Japanese paper) is that its natural shading creates a
changing visual effect known as 'utsuroi'. Designer Eriko Horiki brings the emotions and feelings
that have been nurtured in traditional Japanese architecture alive in contemporary architectural
spaces - whether commercial, renovation, domestic, or entrances - through her innovative
application and use of washi in interior spaces. Her installations give visitors a physical
experience and a taste of what a large-scale washi environment can achieve. Using finely
textured paper and precise illumination, Horiki produces an atmospheric feeling with a hint of
something mystical just on the other side.

Spots in Shots - Narrating the Built Environment in Short Films

nai010 publishers 2018 ISBN 9789462084568 Acqn 29030
Pb 21x26cm 224pp 200col ills £45

'Spots in Shots' is about short films that centre on stories about architecture and urban
development. Whether documentary or fictional, stories give meaning to the built environment.
Compared with conventional architectural representations, film has its own characteristic range of
storytelling tools. In an exceptional interplay of moving pictures, text, and sound, film can stir the
audience's imagination, make people think and rouse their interest in the oeuvre of a designer.
This book is based on scientific research and extensive interviews with filmmakers. Which stories
do they tell? What are their motives? Which issues keep coming up during the creation,
distribution and reception of the works?

Taiwan is densely populated along the island's perimeter and largely covered with steep, rugged

commercial projects has maintained its creativity and rationality. Through first-hand experience
the magazine explores more than 20 projects borne out of the unique conditions on Taiwan,
among them works by Mecanoo, Jun Aoki, Jay Chiu, OMA, Casagrande Laboratory, Fieldoffice

Monu 29 - Narrative Urbanism

Board Publishers 2018 no ISBN Acqn 29112
Pb 20x27cm 132pp 150ills 50col £16

This issue opens with an interview with Cassim Shepard in which he talks about creating a better
general culture of understanding around architecture, urban design, and urban development
issues by using all of the narrative tools we have at our disposal. For instance, collective walks
through lost parts of cities, as suggested by Nick Dunn and Dan Dubowitz, or by observing
people's stories and involving them in creative processes, depicted in Carolyn Drake's photo-
essay. This can even change the urban dynamics, says Kathleen Gmyrek, thereby leading to
participatory narratives, while OMA's Inge Goudsmit reminds us that architects are great
storytellers, too.

delightful heritage for the Milanese who have been living and working in them or just looking at
them for almost a century. The book contains a map of Milan with all Ponti's buildings.

Portuguese architect remains anchored to the fundamentals that supported his first projects.
Constructive precision, material solidity, topographical rigour, or dialogue with the preexisting still
mark works like the pavilion in Viana do Castelo or the facilities by Sete Cidades Lake, the
dwellings in Senhora da Luz or the acclaimed chapel for the Vatican, the Casa do Conhecimento

Gerrit Rietveld - Wealth Of Sobriety

Lectura Cultura 2018 ISBN 9789082135466 Acqn 29219
Hb 25x31cm 528pp col ills £66

A huge monograph dedicated to Gerrit Rietveld, perhaps the most well-known Dutch architect.
Besides his iconic Schroder House, very little is known about the roughly 100 houses Rietveld
designed and built during his career. These houses are characterised by light and space, and
sobriety is a basic principle in his approach. Only a small group of intellectual clients
commissioned him to design an avant-garde residence. Photographer Arjan Bronkhorst went in
search of these unknown houses, photographing their interiors and residents, while authors
Willemijn Zwikstra and Marc van den Eerenbeemt explored archives and interviewed current
residents about living in a Rietveld house.

formation for the field of architectural education and creates a starting point for further
investigations. It reflects the long traditions of teaching architecture the schools have built, but
also the need for a system that enables perspective on how different structural changes impact
not only the institutional identity or the profession but also the teaching of the discipline. Included
are contributions from Juhani Pallasmaa, Peter Bertram, Massimo Santanicchia, Veronika Valk-
Siska, and many more.
