Hum 1: Art, Society and the Individual

Description: A study of various visual and music arts as products of the


creative imagination in dynamic interaction with the society.

Course Objectives:

1. To develop the students’ analytic perception and aesthetic sensibility.


2. To develop the students’ awareness of the interrelationship among the arts within the
socio-historical context.

Topic Outline: No. of hours: 3 hrs. per week

I: The Nature of Art

Objectives: For students to:


recognize art both as personal vision and as an expression of culture and society;
be sensitive to artistic forms as signifier of meaning;
gain insight into the creative process as a significant human experience;
realize that art is democratic and accessible to everyone.

Content/Activities:
A. Art as experience of

1. the artist Interview/dialogue with artists (visual artists, musicians, poets,


etc), actual creative activity, film on artists
and their works
2. of the percipient Guided tour of exhibit, reaction papers on a concert, exhibit,
play, group discussion/work over experience
at a performance,
exhibit, concert, movie
B. Art as an expression

1. of the individual View slides or films showing individual styles as manifestation of


individual expression

2. of society Film showing of art in different periods and countries/locality

C. Art as form

1. as process Visit to an artist’s studio, observing artists at work, film on


artists at work

II The Art Work

Objectives: For students to:


1. gain awareness of the elements and principles common to all the arts as well
as those peculiar to specific art forms

2. cultivate aesthetic sensibility and analytical skills through the study of


particular art forms; perceive meaning of art works on different levels;
understand the interrelationship of form and content in specific works.

Content/Activities:
A. Form

The Visual Arts: Concept of art, canons, Creative activity making use of found
medium, elements, technique, styles and objects, visit to art gallery, analysis of
art
schools of art works/

The Music Arts: Music and Theater: Listening to taped music from simple to
elements, instruments, forms and styles, complex, Viewing films of musicales, attending
Western and Asian music, Philippine concerts, assigned readings, reaction papers
music, basic theater

III Art and Society

Objectives: For students to:


1. perceive how social forces give rise to particular expression forms and styles in a
specific culture;
2. recognize the artistic values and attitudes of a given society;
3. understand the ways in which art influences a particular society either as a catalyst
for
change or as a reinforcer of an established order; and
4. analyze the problems and issues that arise out of the interaction between art and
society.

Content/ Activities:
Western art history, Pre-Hispanic art of Assigned readings, video film showing, field trip,
the Philippines, 19th century art, ethnic research paper on folk arts, one’s
community art
art forms, popular art/folk arts, Visayan (folk songs, plaza, architecture, rituals),
folk art, contemporary art culminating activity
