Zip: CONWAY, AR. 72032- Race: Sex: F Hispanic: Age: (60) NARRATIVE Reporting Officer: 0103 - WALLACE, KEENAN On Friday, January 4, 2019, at approximately 1621, Ms. Katherine Gilliland contacted FCSO Dispatch to report a dog attacked her the near Shenandoah Drive and Antietam Drive. She was hurt in the attack. I was dispatched at 1623. While I was en route to the call FCSO Dispatch advised me Ms. Gilliland was forced to pull a handgun on the dog during the incident. Due to the call involving weapons Cpl. Adkinson responded as well. We met Ms. Gilliland on Shenandoah Drive near Appomattox Drive. She told us she was walking the neighborhood on the roadway when a small brown dog ran from the house-on the comer of Antietam Drive and Shenandoah Drive and attacked her. She had a stick in her hand and attempted to force the dog away from her and continue her walk. When the dog continued advancing Ms. Gilliland stated she pulled a handgun out of her pocket and pointed it at the dog. A white male later identified as Mr. Douglas Canady yelled at Ms, Gilliland for her actions. The dog then retumed the 3440 Antietam Drive with Mr. Canady. After speaking with Ms. Gilliland I drove by 3440 Antietam Drive. I observed a small brown dog coming out of the garage and advancing toward my patrol vehicle growling and barking aggressively. A silver Ford pickup was parked in the driveway as well. I stayed in my vehicle and returned to Ms. Gilliland’s location. She stated that was the same dog that attacked her. While I was speaking with Ms. Gilliland; Mr.Canady left the residence in the Ford truck I observed in the driveway of 3440 Antietem Drive. Cpl. Adkinson and I gave Ms. Gilliland the report information and retumed to 3440 Antietam Drive to attempt to make contact with the aggressive dog's owner(s). When we arrived the dog continued its aggressive behavior. No one came to the door. We spoke to a neighbor as ‘we left the residence that stated the dog lives at 3440 Antietam Drive and he has observed Mr. Canady feeding the dog multiple times. As I was leaving the area I observed Mr. Canady return home. [I got out of my patrol vehicle to make contact, with him and attempted to explain the situation to Mr. Canady regarding his dog's aggressive behavior. When I exited the vehicle the dog became aggressive once more by growling and barking. [ asked Mr. Canady to speak with me near the roadway as to not agitate the dog. He refused. T informed Mr. Canady I would speak with him in his, yard but if his dog threatened my safety I would act accordingly. Mr. Canady began explaining the dog did not belong to him. As Mr. Canady was speaking the dog lunged toward me in an attempt to bite me on my leg. I was approximately 3 feet from the animal at the time. I pulled my handgun and fired one round into the animal to striking it and stopping the threat to my safety. Mr. Canady was approximately 7 feet directly in front of me. The animal was slightly to my right as I faced the residence. Mr. Canady became irate and began recording me with his cell phone screaming I shot ‘his dog’ for no reason. Cpl. Adkinson arrived back on scene moments laand was advised of the situation. Mr. Canady was issued a citation for violation of the Faulkner County Animal Ordinance (C218732) due to his dog's vicious behavior and him allowing the animal to run at large. Mr. Canady refused to sign his citation. I placed it on a metal chair near the from door of the residence when he refused to take the citation. Cpl. Adkinson advised FCSO leadership of the situation due to Mr. Canady irate behavior.
