Method Statement
REINFORCED CONCRETE
Contract Name: Ref:
Address:
Description of Works
(Main objective)
This method statement will cover the works involved in Reinforced Concrete work. This
includes blinding, placing reinforcement, formwork, concreting & finishing, striking formwork
and curing.
The main risks involved with these operations are summarised below: -
Falling from heights when fixing reinforcement, erecting formwork and concreting
Falling objects
Overturning of cranes/ load slippages
Working with concrete- concrete burns
Injury from nails protruding from timbers

Work Method
(Key steps & stages of the work required)
Blinding
Once excavations have been completed PCC will be poured onto a compacted base of crushed
stone.
Formwork will be erected to form the correct profile. The PCC will project as per the drawing
beyond the outside edge of the structure. The PCC fill will be vibrated using an electric poker
unit.
The concrete will be placed by skip or machine bucket and tamped using a timber screed and
then finished with a wooden float.
Fixing Reinforcement
Engineers will set out the main outline of the structure and all internal walls using nails
hammered into the blinding concrete. Datum’s will be given for fixing wall reinforcement using
insulation tape fixed to the main steel at an appropriate level. At all times these datum’s will
correspond to ‘concrete’ levels, with the steel fixer making the correct allowance for cover.
The datum will correspond to the top of the insulation tape.
‘Box outs’ for pipes/openings etc. will be marked by the following method. The centre line of
the pipe will be marked on the concrete surface below, i.e. on the kicker. The level of the
centre line of the box out will then be marked using insulation tape on the main bars. It will
then be possible for the steel fixer to cut out the reinforcement to the correct size. Trimmer
bars will then be fixed to each face.
The steel fixers will select the bundles of steel for the required area. The crane under the
control of a qualified banksman will lift the bundle to the required area where it will be fixed to
line and level.
At all times fixers will wear the correct PPE. When cutting reinforcement with disc cutters
Page 2
safety goggles and gloves will be worn at all times.
All work at heights or where there is a danger of an operative falling will be carried out of
scaffolding.
Erecting Formwork
The formwork will be a proprietary panel type system. Wall panels will be faced to produce a
fair face finish. Wall shutters will be provided with integral scaffolding where possible. Other
scaffolding will be provided as necessary.
Construction joints will comprise of the following. Stop ends will be formed using timber
incorporating a keyway formed from a timber latt. The inside face of the stop end will be
coated with retarder.
Placing Concrete
The concrete gang will prepare the area for concrete works in advance, i.e. install screed unit,
vibrating units and generally make good the work area.
The operatives will all wear the correct PPE in this case rubber gloves and Wellingtons (safety
glasses worn when required).
The concrete ganger will direct the banksman with either the pump or concrete skip to the
correct area and commence the concrete pour.
On high wall pours care will be taken to ensure the concrete is fully compacted at lower levels
and around box outs or cast in pipes.
Upon completion of the pour they will then tidy up equipment and move to the next work area.
All tools and equipment that require cleaning after being in contact with fresh concrete will be
cleaned.
Base slabs and walls will generally be struck the next day. For roof slabs striking of falsework
will occur when a specified strength of concrete has been achieved. This will be determined by
taking extra concrete cubes for early testing. The required strength will be noted on the
structural drawings.
Bases and walls will have a single application of curing compound applied on completion of
Page 3
the pour (for slabs) or removal of formwork (for walls).
Upon striking of formwork a post pour inspection will be carried out and any remedial work
carried out.
Tie holes will be sealed with a proprietary WRC approved system such as Tie Seal with the
thimbles placed to both faces.
Positions of holding down bolts will be checked, plinths for machinery checked and an as built
drawing produced. Cast in pipe work will be checked for line and level.
Formwork will be checked for line, level, verticality, cross sectional dimension and length by
Site Engineers prior to concreting commencing. This will be to the tolerances specified for the
Project. Typically:-
Line will be controlled from offset data established outside of the structure. These will be hilti
nails hammered into concrete pads or pegs in soft ground.
The reinforcement will be checked to ensure all is present and that there is the correct cover in
accordance with the project standard details.
The minimum cover is not less than 5mm than the required cover stated in the standard details.
The General foreman or foreman joiner is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness and general
workmanship of the pour.
Prior to any concrete being placed a nominated person will check any falsework/temporary
works against the relevant drawing.
Scaffolding
All scaffolding will be erected and dismantled by fully competent personnel supplied from a
reputable company. All personnel will hold a current CITB card. The general foreman will
access the need for scaffolding and direct the scaffolding personnel to that area. They will
access the amount of material required and direct the appropriate banksman to use the crane to
lift the equipment.
Page 4
The scaffold will be erected by approved methods of erection. Upon completion of the scaffold
they will check it and then affix a ‘scaffold ready for use’ tag. On a weekly basis a nominated
person will inspect the scaffold. The general foreman will be informed of any dangerous
defects immediately and he will ensure that they are remedied without delay.
Upon dismantling a scaffold the scaffolder will affix the red ‘Do not Use ‘tag and commence
dismantling. He will ensure no other operatives use this scaffold once dismantling has
commenced.
Weather
Daily weather forecasts will be monitored for snap frosts. Records of on site temperatures will
be maintained.
During periods of high temperatures all exposed surfaces will be covered in polythene or damp
hessian to prevent either the temperature of concrete exceeding 320C or 60C above the
prevailing shade temperature when the latter is greater than 210C.
All work at heights or where there is a danger of falling will be carried out off properly erected
and maintained scaffolding.
All plant operatives will be fully trained and hold current CITB cards for the category of
machine they are operating. All cranes will have current test certificates including chains and
slings.
Cube sampling rate will be a minimum frequency of 50m3. Any pours less than this requires
one sample.
Slump tests to be carried out on the first and then random loads in accordance with the Project
Specifications.
Extra early strike cubes will be taken for roof slabs etc to determine when falsework and
formwork can be struck.
Cubes will be stripped as soon as possible after casting i.e. next working day and stored at 200C
in a curing tank.
