1.1.2 Profile
The structure being designed is two-storey residential building designed
by Architect George P. Bermeo, UAP. This residential building is owned Ms.
Vianca Marie V. Cruz. This Residential Structure is located in United Paranaque
Subdivision 5, Paranaque City.
1.1.3 Design Phase
The group focused on designing the second floor as this is where the slabs,
beams and columns are mostly found. Our knowledge regarding the topic would
be most effectively tested when design the second floor due to the structural
components found at this part of the house. Just like any other structure, it is
composed of beams, one way slabs, two slabs, columns, etc.. Further into this
paper, the group will be discussing the calculations made in attempting to design
the structures different components and dimensional outcomes.

1.2 Scope of Work

The scope of this structural design includes the following:
● Ultimate Stress Design of Beam sections indicated in the framing plan proposed by the
group
● Slab design indicated in the floor plan of the structure

2.0 General Project Information

______________________________________________________________________________
2.1 Proposed Development

Ms. Vianca Marie V. Cruz has appointed MAJEX Contractors to provide structural design of
a proposed Residential Building for Building Permit. The proposed structural design was made
by dividing the larger areas into smaller ones, adding beams in between in order for these areas
to become one-way slabs instead of two.

3 Design Standards and References

______________________________________________________________________________
3.1 Codes and Practices
The following references has been used for the structural design:
● NSCP Table 204.1, 2-15
● NSCP Table 205.1, 2-15
● NSCP Section 405.3.1b

3.2 Geotechnical Report

Soil is assumed to be S3 as angle of internal friction is equal to 32 degrees. The S-Factor is
assumed to be 1.5. While the assumed load bearing capacity of soil for the foundation is equal to
275 KPa.

3.3 Computer Programs

The following computer programs were used for the analysis and design of the structure:
● Graphical Rapid Analysis of Structures Program (GRASP) - 2D Structural design tool
used to calculate moments, and reactions for designing of beam and slab sections.
● Microsoft Excel - A spreadsheet tool used to layout the structural design requirements
and to check if the data of the beams and slabs will pass for the code requirements.

4 Materials
______________________________________________________________________________

4.1 Reinforced Concrete

The following reinforced concrete properties were used for the structural analysis:
Reinforced concrete density : 23.6

4.1.1 Compressive Strength of Concrete

The assumed 28-day concrete cylinder strength used in the analysis are:
Foundation
• Isolated Footing f’c = 21 MPa
• Wall Footing f’c = 21 MPa
Columns f’c = 21 MPa
Frame Beams f’c = 21 MPa
Slabs f’c = 21 MPa

4.1.2 Steel Reinforcement

The following steel reinforcement properties were used for the structural analysis:
Reinforcing steel density :
Minimum yield strength was assumed as follows:
• Diameter 12 and above fy = 415 MPa
• Diameter 10 and below fy = 275 MPa

5 Design Loadings
______________________________________________________________________________

5.1 Gravity Loading

The gravity loads used in the design are based on the minimum design loads and material
densities from NSCP 2015. The values provided below are assumptions based on
provided architectural ceilings and finishes. The loads for the beams and slabs are applied as
uniformly distributed line loads.
5.1.1 Superimposed Dead Loads
Roof Finish
• Tubular Steel = (77.3 KN/m3)*(0.03m) = 2.319 KPa

Roof Ceiling
• Gypsum Board (per mm thickness) = 0.008 KPa
• Wythe thickness = 200 mm
Total Ceiling Load= 0.16 KPa

Floor Load
• 1.1 + (23.6)*(0.05) = 2.28 KPa

Dead Load
• 0.16 KPa + 2.28 KPa = 2.44 KPa

Superimposed Dead Load

• 1.2*(2.44 KPa) + 1.6*(1.9KPa)=5.97 KPa
Total Superimposed Dead Load = 5.97 KPa

5.1.2 Roof Live Loads

Total Roof Live Load
• Roof live load, Type 1, Area 20 to 60 m2 = 1.9 KPa

5.1.3 Partition Loads

Exterior CHB Walls (Firewall/Partition wall)
• 150mm CHB plastered on one side (full grout) = 3.97 KPa per m height
• 150mm CHB for each face plastered =0.24 KPa
Total Exterior CHB Wall = 4.21 KPa

6.4 Structural Model

The main lateral resisting systems were modeled using GRASP. The Moment of the frames and
beams and other factors that may affect its stability was calculated with the use of Microsoft
Excel.
Figure 6.2.1 Sketch diagram of the design plan

For the design plan, 4 types of beams are to be utilized which was decided on based on
which design was handling the most amount of load. The 4 beams specifically are the beams
highlighted within a rectangle over them in figure 6.4.1. Beam 1 refers to the 4.90 meter beam,
beam 2 refers to the middle beam, beam 3 is the left beam of the diagram, and beam 4 is the
horizontal beam highlighted. Using GRASP, each of the beams were modeled such that the
parameters required, the ultimate moment (Mu), was taken. The order of analysis was performed
such that beam 1 was analyzed first followed by beam 4, then beams 2 and 3 followed
respectively. Analyzing beam 4 was important to establish the point load to be used for the rest of
the beams. For each of the tables, the data for Mz.pos represents the ultimate moment at the
member specified. Each beam will replace a specified amount of beams. These adjustments can
be observed within figure 6.4.2, figure 6.4.3, figure 6.4.4, and figure 6.4.5.

Figure 6.4.4. Beams to be based on beam 3 Figure 6.4.5. Beams to be based on beam 4

For each of the beams, the established live load was 1.9 KPa and the SDL was 5.97 KPa,
which was calculated for through the load combination of 1.2DL + 1.6LL. The point loads and
reaction forces used for each beam were strictly 35.84 kN and 11.42 kN for the dead load and
live load respectively. The support conditions for each joint were set to fixed. For the reference
coordinate for each beam designed, all of the designs, including the overall design plan, was
designed such that the point of origin of each was at (3,0). As for the slabs, each slab will follow
a critical slab design to be designated on the horizontal mid-span (refer to 7.1.1).

Figure 1 above shows the sample beam sketch which showcases the base, height, spacing,
number of bars and its diameter. These are all laid out in the Beam schedule above at Table 6.5.1.
Each beam mark’s section properties are shown.

Table 6.5.1 Beam Value Testing

Above at Table 6.5.1, the Beam Value Test is shown where it is concluded that based on steel
ratio, the beams will pass given an under reinforced condition. The DCR shows the value of Mu
divided by the value of phi times Mn. This is the Demand Capacity ratio. The minimum and
maximum steel ratio

Figure 6.5.1 Sample Beam Mark

At Figure 6.5.1 the Sample Beam Mark is shown. In the group’s excel, the Beam mark can be
adjusted to each Beam, where the vales seen above can also be portrayed. This is where the
group’s Beam Value testing can base whether the steel ratio will pass or fail.
