DESCRIPTIVE TEXT

DESCRIPTIVE TEXT ; DEFINITION, GENERIC

STRUCTURES, PURPOSES, LANGUAGE
FEATURES
Hallo everybody
DESCRIPTIVE TEXT, or in terms of writing only known as
“description” is one of English lessons that should be mastered
not only by junior high school students but also by senior high
school students, college students and anyone who loves English.
Because after all, descriptive material is very necessary for the
increasing of our English proficiency.
Some of the most famous authors, especially fiction writers, have
good skill in writing of descriptive text so that their writing is
very readable and easy to understand. Therefore, if we were able
to master this lesson well, we might be able to become a great
writer in the future.

Furthermore, explanations and examples of this descriptive text

can help a friend who is or still a long journey to learn English. Do
not hesitate to read the descriptive text below, the more often we
read we will be able to understand it more. And it would be nice if
we do not only understand mere, but also can write descriptive
text ourself….

Maybe you are “bored” to learn narrative text, because of that,

it’s time to discuss descriptive text so that our head is not merely
contains stories and stories
Definition of Descriptive Text
Descriptive Text is a text which says what a person or a thing is
like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person,
place, or thing.

In a broad sense, description, as explained by Kane (2000: 352),

is defined like in the following sentence:
Description is about sensory experience—how something looks,
sounds, tastes. Mostly it is about visual experience, but
description also deals with other kinds of perception.
Thus, if we conclude it from Kane’s explanation above, the
descriptive text is meaningful text that describes the experience
related to the senses, such as what shape, sound, taste is. Most
descriptive text is about visual experience, but in fact experience
other than the sense of sight, we can also use it to make
descriptive text.

But in particular, the descriptive text is, “…… is a text which says
what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and
reveal a particular person, place, or thing.”

So, it can be said that this descriptive text is a text that explains
about whether a person or an object is like, whether its form, its
properties, its amount and others. The purpose of the descriptive
text is clear, that is to describe, represent or reveal a person or
an object, either abstract or concrete.

Generic Structure of Descriptive Text

When writing descriptive text, there are some generic
structures (actually not mandatory) for our writing to be true. The
arrangement is:
# Identification: (contains about the introduction of a person,
place, animal or object will be described.)
# Description: contains a description of something such as
animal, things, place or person by decribing its features, forms,
colors, or anything related to what the writer describe.

Purpose of Descriptive text

– To describe person, thing or place in specific
– To describe a particular person, thing or place.
Language Feature of Descriptive Text
– Specific participant : has a certain object, is not common and
unique (only one). for example: Bandengan beach, my house,
Borobudur temple, uncle Jim
– The use of the adjective (an adjective) to clarify the noun, for
example: a beautiful beach, a handsome man, the famous place in
jepara, etc.
– The use of simple present tense: The sentence pattern used is
simple present because it tells the fact of the object described.
– Action verb: verbs that show an activity (for example, run, sleep,
walk, cut etc….
Example Descriptive Text – My Favorite
Teacher
My favorite teacher is my history teacher, and he is by far the
best teacher that I have ever had. He has the ability to make a
subject that many students find incredibly boring come to life
through his enthusiasm and passion for history, and his love of
being a teacher. Going to his lessons is something we look
forward to, not dread, like we do with most other lessons.
It’s ever so funny to watch him get excited about something,
which happens in every lesson. It’s easy to know that he’s getting
excited because he begins bouncing up and down slightly in a
way that no other sixty-something year old would ever managed
without looking completely ridiculous. He has this dark (with
more and more grey streaks these days), springy hair that lines
the edge of his growing bald patch, and the hair bounces up and
down with him like thousands of tiny little springs. Then, he takes
on his whole new persona, often going into role and becoming the
character or figure he is talking about, doing the voices, the
actions, and parading up and down the room gesticulating wildly,
but all the while there’s a gentle ‘bounce, bounce, bounce’, as
though the springs are not just on his head but on the soles of his
shoes too.

A teacher that doesn’t take himself too seriously always will be a

big hit with teenagers, although he’s not afraid to impose his
authority if he has to. I’ve only ever heard him properly shout
once (although thankfully it wasn’t it me), but it isn’t an
experience that I would like to repeat. When he lost it, the room
suddenly became more silent than I’d ever known it to be before.
We all sat slightly paralyzed, not even anting to breathe too
loudly, because hearing such a jovial and jolly little man lose his
temper was a huge shock. It certainly had the right kind of
impact though, because he’s never needed to shout since.

It is actually this teacher that I have to thank for my love of

history. In his lessons, history does not mean copying out of
textbooks and writing pages and pages of notes. History is alive;
history is something tangible, that you can see, hear and feel, and
we can live it through dressing up and acting out scenes or
taking trips to important places of historical interest. And
although he’s getting on in years and may not be teaching for
much longer, he will have an important place in history for many
of his students, because there has never been a teacher able to
bring a subject to life in quite the same way he does.

MacQuarie University
Identification Macquarie University is one of the largest universities in Australia. This year,
in 2004, it celebrates its 40th anniversary.
Description The university is located at the North Ryde Greenbelt, Sydney, where the New
South Wales government sets aside 135 hectares for the institution. In 1964, Macquarie area
was a rural retreat on the city fringe, but today the campus and its surroundings have evolved
beyond recognition. The North Ryde District has grown into a district of intensive occupation
anchored by a vibrant and growing university.
Blessed with a fortunate location and room to breathe, Macquarie can be proud of that careful
planning that retains and enrich the university’s most attractive natural features. A pleasing
balance between buildings and plating is evident across the campus. This emphasis on the
importance of landscape has created images of Macquarie as a place that members of the
university are most likely to pleasurably recollect.
One of the highlights of the landscape is the Mars Creek zone. It comprises landscaped creek
sides and valley floor, a grass amphitheatre, and artificial lake… surrounded by rocks and
pebbles, native plants and eucalypts.
Today, a railway station is under construction. In three years1 time, Macquarie will be the
only university in Australia with a railway station on site. Macquarie is poised to be the most
readily accessible in Sydney region by rail and motorway, yet retaining its beautiful site.

A. The Differences between Report and Descriptive Text

Some text types are quite difficult to differ. Such report and descriptive text have the
similarity in the social function and generic structure. However if they are analyzed carefully,
the slight difference between the two text types will reveal.
The purpose of the two texts are to give the live-description of the object/participant. Both the
report and descriptive text try to show rather than tell the reader about the factual condition of
the object. Readers by themselves will catch the impressive point of the object through that
showing writing style. What make different, between report and descriptive text, is the scope
of the written object. If we talk about, eg: bicycle, it belongs to report text. It will talk about
bicycle in general; its parts, physical strengh, function for certain people or other general
characters of bike. In the other hand, descriptive text will convey more focus, for example
"my bicycle" with its specific characters; colour, lengh, wheel style, etc.
In short, report text describes the way of certain things and frequently refer to phenomenon of
nature, animal and scientific object. Mostly, report is written after getting careful observation.
This scientific and technical sense make clearer difference from descriptive text. The way of
descriptive text in showing thing is based on the objective fact of the thing. It describe the
specific thing simply as the thing is.

a) DESCRIPTIVE
Purpose: To explain the processes involved in the formation or working of natural or socio-
cultural phenomena.
Generic Structure:
1. General statement
2. Explanation
3. Closing
Dominant Language Features:
1. Using Simple Present Tense
2. Using action verbs
3. Using passive voice
4. Using noun phrase
5. Using adverbial phrase
6. Using technical terms

English – Descriptive
Prambanan Temple

Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple compound in Central Java in Indonesia, located
approximately 18 km east of Yogyakarta.

The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the largest Hindu temples in
south-east Asia. It is characterized by its tall and pointed architecture, typical of Hindu temple
architecture, and by the 47m high central building inside a large complex of individual
temples.

It was built around 850 CE by either Rakai Pikatan, king of the second Mataram dynasty, or
Balitung Maha Sambu, during the Sanjaya Dynasty. Not long after its construction, the
temple was abandoned and began to deteriorate. Reconstruction of the compound began in
1918. The main building was completed in around 1953. Much of the original stonework has
been stolen and reused at remote construction sites. A temple will only be rebuilt if at least
75% of the original stones are available, and therefore only the foundation walls of most of
the smaller shrines are now visible and with no plans for their reconstruction.

The temple was damaged during the earthquake in Java in 2006. Early photos suggest that
although the complex appears to be structurally intact, damage is significant. Large pieces of
debris, including carvings, were scattered over the ground. The temple has been closed to the
public until damage can be fully assessed. The head of Yogyakarta Archaeological
Conservation Agency stated that: “it will take months to identify the precise damage”.
However, some weeks later in 2006 the site re-opened for visitors. The immediate
surroundings of the Hindu temples remain off-limits for safety reasons.

My Pets
We have three family pets: a dog, a cat, and a tortoise.
Descriptions
The dog’s name is Benjamin. He is big golden Labrador. He is beautiful. He has big brown
eyes and a long tail. He is very friendly dog, but he is sometimes a little stupid. Dogs are
expensive to keep but they are fun to play with.
Our cat is named Martha. She is quite young, but she is not a kitten. She is very pretty. She
has black and white fur and green eyes. She’s smart, too and very clean.
The tortoise’s name is Rocky. He has short, fat legs, a long neck, and a very hard shell. He is
also very old and slow. He’s ugly and dirty, but I like him.

Bandengan Beach
Bandengan Beach or Tirta Samudra Beach is the famous beach in jepara. the place is very
beautiful and romantic. people around Jepara, Kudus, Demak knows this place.

This place is located 7 kilometers north of Jepara city center. The way to get there is very
easy. Just follow the traffic sign and you will find it. From the town square, follow the road to
Bangsri then turn left when reached kuwasen village. You can take public transportation or by
your own vehicle.

The white sandy beach which has pure water is good for swimming. The beach is save
enough for swimming because the beach is shallow and the wave is not so big. This place is
more beautiful at dusk. We can see the beautiful sunset with our family or friends.

In this location, we can sit and relax on the shelter while enjoy the natural beach breezy wind.
It also has large pandan tree field. It is suitable for youngster activities such as camping.

If we want to sail, we can rent the traditional boat owned by local people. We can make
voyage around the beach or we can go to pulau panjang (Panjang Island). Some time we can
find banana boat and Jet Ski for rent.

the trader such as roasted fish, crab, boiled shell. Pindang srani is one of the delicious food
enjoyed by the visitors.

Jakarta City
Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia. It is centrally located within the country on the
northwest coast of Java Island at the mouth of the Ciliwung river. Jakarta dominates
Indonesian’s administrative, economy, cultural activities, an is a major commercial and
transportation hub within Asia-with a population of about 9 million, Jakarta has more people
than any other cities in Indonesia.
The climate is hot and humid year-round. Rainfall occurs throughout the year, although it is
the heaviest from November to May. To average annual precipitation in Jakarta is 1, 790 mm.
The city lies on a flat, low plain and is prone to flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
Kota is city’s oldest commercial area. It is located south of the old Sunda Kelapa harbor.
Glodok, the south of Kota is a banking, retail and residential neighborhood with a large
Chinese population. Merdeka Square with Monas (The National Monument) dominates the
city’s central district. Surrounding the square are Istana Merdeka, the presidential palace, the
National Museum, and the Istiqlal Mosque.

The purposes of the two texts are to give the live-description of the object/participant. Both
the report and descriptive text try to show rather than tell the reader about the factual
condition of the object. Readers by themselves will catch the impressive point of the object
through that showing writing style. What makes different, between report and descriptive text

for example "my bicycle" with its specific characters; color, length, wheel style, etc.
In short, report text describes the way of certain things and frequently refer to phenomenon of

This scientific and technical sense makes clearer difference from descriptive text. The way of

specific thing simply as the thing is.

Descriptive Text

Pengertian Descriptive Text

Dalam artian luas, Description, seperti dijelaskan oleh Kane (2000: 352),
diartikan seperti pada kalimat di bawah ini :
Description is about sensory experience—how something looks, sounds, tastes. Mostly it
is about visual experience, but description also deals with other kinds of perception.
Jadi, jika disimpulkan dari penjelasan Kane di atas, tulisan deskriptif bermakna
teks yang menjelaskan tentang pengalaman yang berhubungan dengan pancaindera,
seperti apa bentuknya, suaranya, rasanya. Kebanyakan teks deskriptif memang tentang
pengalaman visual, tapi nyatanya pengalaman selain dari indera penglihatanpun bisa
digunakan dalam descriptive text.

Namun secara khusus, descriptive text adalah, "...... is a text which says what a
person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place,
or thing."

1. Identification : berisi tentang identifikasi hal / seorang yang akan dideskripsikan.

2. Description : berisi tentang penjelasan / penggambaran tentang hal / seseorang
dengan menyebutkan beberapa sifatnya.

Ketika kita menulis descriptive text, hal yang wajib kita ketahui adalah cara kita
menyampaikan deskripsi tulisan kita tersebut. Oleh karena itu pemahaman tentang
adjective (kata sifat bahasa Inggris) wajib kita kuasai.

Selain adjective, beberapa struktur bahasa Inggris yang berfungsi sebagai

adjective pun harus kita pahami agar penulisan descriptive text kita terlihat tidak kaku.

Contoh Descriptive Text tentang Jeruk

Orange, the popular fruit which is easy to find and relatively cheap, in fact contain much
nutrition, which is good for our health. The fruit has widely been known as not only
vitamin and mineral-rich fruit but also containing essential substances, which cannot be
produced by human body. As a matter of fact, those substances are necessary since
they are used in the process of the growth and development of human body.

The non-nutrition compounds in orange can minimize the risk of some dreadful diseases,
such as cardiovascular, cancer, and eyes problems. Unfortunately, for many years
people see the fruit only as the source of vitamin C while actually it also produces
carbohydrate, potassium, calcium, thiamin, niacin, vitamin B, phosphor, magnesium,
riboflavin, another natural chemical compounds.
Consuming orange is also suggested for those who have diet programme since
there are only 60-80 calories in one fruit. Therefore, by having this fruit in daily menu,
someone can reduce his or her weight.

Contoh Descriptive Text tentang Yuta, Teman Kelas
Yuta is one of the 150 International students at the ELC of Brigham Young
University. He is from Japan. He grew up in Japan, and he is 19 years old. There are six
people in his family, a father, a mother, three sisters and himself. He is the youngest in
his family. He is also the only boy in his family, but now he is in Provo, Utah, studying
English. Yuta likes the United States very much and he thinks everything is cheap. Yuta
thinks his English classes are excellent and the teachers are professionals. Yuta thinks
someone in his class is noisy so he doesn't like that. In his free time he spends too much
time sleeping, so it seems that he has a sleeping sickness.

Contoh Descriptive Text tentang Provo

I have been in Provo for almost eleven months. I have seen winter, spring,
summer, and fall. Provo's winter is so beautiful. The mountains are covered with a lot of
snow. They look like many beautiful brides wearing wedding dresses, and veils. In
spring, Provo doesn't have many trees; when the snow melts the mountains are bald as
strong bald men. Summer in Provo is very hot in the daytime. Last summer when I was
walking under the sky, it was like walking in an oven; the sun was like a fire that burned
my skin. In spring and summer the weather was always clear. I never used my
umbrella. Provo was like a huge clothes dryer; it is very dry in spring and summer. In
the fall the weather in Provo is very strange. One late September morning when I woke
up, the mountaintops was covered with snow. Provo is a lovely and strange place. I love
it very much.

Contoh Descriptive Text tentang Gitar

written by Jeremy Burden

My most valuable possession is an old, slightly warped blond guitar--the first instrument
I taught myself how to play.

It's nothing fancy, just a Madeira folk guitar, all scuffed and scratched and finger-
printed. At the top is a bramble of copper-wound strings, each one hooked through the
eye of a silver tuning key. The strings are stretched down a long, slim neck, its frets
tarnished, the wood worn by years of fingers pressing chords and picking notes. The
body of the Madeira is shaped like an enormous yellow pear, one that was slightly
damaged in shipping. The blond wood has been chipped and gouged to gray, particularly
where the pick guard fell off years ago.
No, it's not a beautiful instrument, but it still lets me make music, and for that I will
always treasure it.

between buildings and plating is evident across the campus. This
emphasis on the importance of landscape has created images of
Macquarie as a place that members of the university are most likely to
pleasurably recollect.

One of the highlights of the landscape is the Mars Creek zone. It

comprises landscaped creek sides and valley floor, a grass
amphitheatre, and artificial lake… surrounded by rocks and pebbles,
native plants and eucalypts.

Today, a railway station is under construction. In three years1 time,

Macquarie will be the only university in Australia with a railway station
on site. Macquarie is poised to be the most readily accessible in Sydney
region by rail and motorway, yet retaining its beautiful site.
