NEW PT3 FORMATS FOR PT3 2019

1. New term: Raters – teachers (whoever rates the paper is called raters).
2. Each skill should be given equal importance.
3. There are 4 different papers according to specific skills.
4. There are new answer sheets and teachers need to train their candidates how to fill the new
answer sheets.
5. Literature won’t be assessed. It has been taken out. Literature will be conducted in class.
(Next year confirmation).
6. All papers will be carried out more or less at the same time especially towards the end of the
year. Teachers will have ample time to teach and train the students for the test.
7. Changes will begin next year 2019 for the Form 3, will be followed by 2021 for the Form 5
and 2022 for Standard 6.
8. The scales for productive skills will be aligned with CEFR bands. Meaning (how to mark).

PT3 SPEAKING TEST 2019
[ 11 minutes ]
Part 1: Ice-Breaking Session (No marks for this section)

1. Candidates will be asked general questions to build their mood.


2. Candidates will be interviewed as if they are new students (ask their names even you know
them). This is to elicit ideas and take them away from the exam phobia.

Part 2: Story Telling

1. Each candidate will be labeled: Candidate A and Candidate B.


2. Candidate A will receive a paper with a sequence of pictures.
3. Candidate A will tell/describe the pictures to candidate B.
4. Candidate A can use any pronoun/ give names or mention any details according to his/her
understanding.
5. Candidate B will listen to the Candidate A’s story/explanation.
6. Rater (teacher) will ask 1 question to Candidate B based on the picture from Candidate A.
7. Examiner will be there (next to the rater) and give marks.
8. Step 2 till 7 will be repeated and candidate A and B will exchange their roles and different
pictures will be used.

Part 3: Discussion

1. Both candidates will be given a graphic diagram/table.


2. There will be a real-life situation such as Deciding a birthday present, which destination
should they pick for a family picnic/ Deciding items to be brought for a camping.
3. Both candidates need to discuss and make a decision based on the diagram.
4. They don’t really need to reach a conclusion. (Likely will happen for good candidates).
5. This is an ongoing discussion.
6. Candidates can bring outside ideas or anything from their understanding/schemata.
7. Prompts will be provided for weaker students.

Reminders:

1. This is a speaking test. There will be no writing. Candidates will try their best to speak.
2. Raters will stop and pause according to the need of the discussion.
3. Solution for odd numbers of students will be informed next year.
4. Teach students speaking by using simple phrases like:
- What do you think? How can you improve this? What would like to do? Which one
would you choose? I think… I would choose/It seems that/based on my/In my opinion…

PT3 LISTENING TEST 2019
[ 35 minutes ]
Part 1: Visual Multiple Choice - 5 Questions.

1. The questions could be either a dialogue or a monologue.


2. Candidates listen and match the picture according to the dialogue.
3. Daily conversation will be used: A conversation between a mother and a son- discussing what
would the son want to have for dinner.

Part 2: Sequencing – 5 empty blanks.

1. There will be a sequence of event.


2. 7 answers will be provided.
3. Candidates have to choose 5 out of 7 the correct ones. 2 extra answers act as distractors.
4. The first step will be provided:

Part 3: Multiple Choice Items – 5 questions.

1. The same like in PT3 listening test only 3 answers will be provided (A, B & C).

Part 4: Note Completion- monologue (5 empty blanks).

1. 5 pieces of information will be needed. (words/figures/spelling)


2. Use the words from the recording only-meaning lifting.
3. Do not paraphrase (3 or less words are only needed here).

Part 5: Note Completion- dialogue (5 empty blanks).

1. 5 pieces of information will be needed. (words/figures/spelling)


2. Use the words from the recording only-meaning lifting.
3. Do not paraphrase (3 or less words are only needed here).
4. Slightly challenging compared to the Part 4.

Reminders:

1. This is a listening test therefore, candidates only have to listen and write answers exactly
from the recording.
2. The recording will be played twice.
3. For empty blanks- some answers are given the options of A, B and C. Therefore, candidates
only have to write the alphabet. (No need for full answers).
4. Candidates just need to answer in the booklet and there will be time after the test for
candidates to transfer their answers on the answer sheet.

PT3 WRITING TEST 2019
[ 60 minutes ]

Part 1: Short Communicative Message (20 marks)

1. Candidates have to respond to an informal message.


2. This includes- email, informal letter, short message, note, postcard.
3. Candidates are advised to follow the word limit. (80 words)
4. If more, it is okay.
5. Sample question:
A friend would like to try a new hobby and he has a few on his mind. Write a short reply
suggesting a suitable hobby for him.

Part 2: A semi-formal essay

1. Candidates have to respond to a given visual organizer.


2. Candidates may add their own ideas and there is no limit to the context.
3. Freedom is given to the candidates especially on how they interpret the question.
4. Candidates are advised to follow the word limit. (120 words).

PT3 READING TEST 2019
[ 1 hour and 15 mins ]
Part 1: Objectives (8 Questions)

1. Candidates have to read the whole text in order to get the answers.
2. Real-life texts will be chosen- notice/advertisement/ SMS
3. Answers will be given (A, B & C)
4. All words and vocab used will be only in B1 level.

Part 2: Error Correction (8 Errors)

1. Errors will be put into text. Each error will be underlined.


2. Errors will be focused on lexical/grammatical and choice of vocab.
3. An example will be given and will be labeled as 0.

Part 3: Info Transfer (8 Questions)

1. It will be in a linear text.


2. Choose no more than 3 words or a number for answers.

Part 4: Comprehension (10 Questions)

1. A slightly longer text compared to the previous one.


2. This could be in linear or non-linear text.
3. Choose no more than 5 words or a number for answers.
4. There will be note completion questions and comprehension questions.
5. Q25 & 26- Note completion, Q27,28,29,30,31,&32 – Qns & Answers,
Q33&34- Vocab (word only)

Part 5: Note Completion (6 Questions)

1. Gapped text- Cohesion and Cohesive devises will be tested here- anaphoric/cataphoric.
2. Longest text and quite difficult.
3. There will be 6 empty blanks and 8 choices of answers will be given).
4. Candidates write only the alphabets and later on transfer the answers after the exam.
