Residency Lesson Plan Guide

Name: Emily Hill Lesson Date: November 12, 2018

Grade and Topic: Kindergarten Math Lesson Length: 2 days: 25 minutes – 30 minutes

CENTRAL FOCUS:

The focus for this lesson is to introduce addition and subtraction and to demonstrate modeling numbers. It is important for
students to master this standard because it sets a base for all other math they will do in the future. It also teaches them the
importance of counting every object in a model and not leaving anything out. Once they master modeling through images,
they can move on to more difficult things such as rectangular arrays and scattered configurations.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:

Standard K.OA.A.1 Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings,
sounds, acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations

LESSON OBJECTIVE(S):

Given examples, students will recognize and calculate addition and subtraction problems using models with 90 percent
accuracy.

MONITORING STUDENT LEARNING - FORMATIVE AND SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS:

List the types of formative and summative assessments that will be used in this lesson.
 Formative: Students will complete a worksheet to practice addition and subtraction. The handouts will
have 6 equations along with space for modeling the equation. (See handouts below)
 Summative: At the end of the unit students will complete a test which consists of addition and subtraction
equations and asks students to model those equations using models.

Explain the link between the assessment(s) and the objectives.

The standard calls for the use of models and/or equations to solve addition and subtraction problems which is
what the assessments test.

Assessment Accommodations for this lesson (e.g. IEP, 504 students, gifted, ESL, other).
 Students with an IEP may be given a time extension during the summative assessment.
 Students who are struggling with the standard will be given simpler equations until they master it and
then they will move on to more difficult equations.
 Gifted students will be given more difficult equations and/or more equations to complete.
 An activity sheet related to math will be provided for students who finish early.

MATERIALS:

● PowerPoint - K Math Lesson PPT.pptx

● Worksheets
● Activity sheets
● Colored pencils
● Pencils
● Whiteboard
● Expo marker
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

● What are the key concepts/ideas for the lesson?

For this lesson, the main idea is to develop addition and subtraction skills using models and drawings.

● What is the academic language (e.g. vocabulary, language functions, and discourse) that must be
considered in this lesson?

Addition, Subtraction, Model, Equals, Plus, Minus, Equation

● How does this lesson connect with and build on the previous lesson(s)?

This lesson demonstrates that they have mastered counting skills which were covered in previous units.

● How do you expect to build on this lesson in subsequent lessons?

In subsequent lessons, I expect to begin using larger numbers past 10 in their addition and subtraction problems. This
lesson teaches them how to add and subtract which prepares them for larger equations like 22 + 10

● Why will you need to plan differentiated activities or assessments?

Differentiated activities will be planned for students who are struggling to master the standard, students with an IEP, and
gifted students. This is needed so students do not get left behind and to help gifted students reach their full potential.

● What connections will you make to the cultural, personal, and community assets of your students?

This lesson will tie into the Thanksgiving holiday which relates to students who celebrate it and it teaches about
Thanksgiving to students who haven’t celebrated it before or students whose culture doesn’t involve Thanksgiving.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Day One

Introduction: Call for student attention and ask them if anyone knows anything about how to add and subtract. Take
answers from raised hands and give positive reinforcement to correct answers. (2 minutes)

Procedures:
 Begin the PowerPoint with the first slide introducing the + (plus), - (minus), and = (equal) signs. (2 minutes)
 Using the next slide as a visual aid, explain to students what addition is and why we use it. (2 minutes)
 Then, have students practice as a class using the three examples on the PowerPoint slides. First, have them
count the number of images shown and then try to solve the equation using the images. (3 minutes)
 After group practice, explain the worksheet they are about to complete by reading it to them and showing an
example. Inform the students that if they get done early then they can color the next sheet. (2 minutes)
 Once the presentation is over, pass out the worksheets and colored pencils. (2 minutes)
 Let students work independently to complete the worksheet. Walk around and observe the class to be sure
they are on task and answer any questions they have. (6 minutes)

Closure: To close this lesson, ask students to pick a problem and share what answer they found. If they give the
correct answer, offer positive reinforcement and if they answer incorrectly ask if anyone else can help them find the
correct answer. After reviewing the worksheet, tell everyone that tomorrow they will be reviewing addition and then
moving on to subtraction. Answer any questions the students may have. (6 minutes)
Day Two

Introduction: On the second day, start out by asking if anyone remembers what they did in the previous
lesson/day before. This will assess whether the students need an extensive or shorter review. After listening to
their responses, put a practice addition problem on the board and ask someone to come up and solve it using a
model. Then, have the PowerPoint pulled up and on the first slide to have students read the I Can statement
aloud. Briefly review the math symbols and move on to subtraction. (5 minutes)

Procedures:
 Introduce subtraction by asking if anyone knows what the word subtraction means. This can be used to
measure prior knowledge. Then, show and explain the definition of subtraction to the class. Ask students
if they can think of any ways they use subtraction in their lives. (2 minutes)
 Go through the 3 practice subtraction problems with the class. Start out with the images and ask students
how many there are. Then click to cross out some of the images and ask students how many are left. After
that, click to reveal the equation and answer. Answer any questions students may have. (5 minutes)
 Using the final slide, explain and demonstrate the worksheet directions that are about to be passed out. Be
sure to explain directions clearly to avoid confusion. (2 minutes)
 Distribute the worksheets to students and instruct them to pull out their pencils. Once everyone has
received their sheet they can begin working. While students are working, walk around to observe the class
and answer any questions they may have. If anyone finishes early they should be given an activity sheet
to complete. (6 -10minutes)

Closure: To close this lesson, ask students to pick a problem and share what answer they found. If they give the
correct answer, offer positive reinforcement and if they answer incorrectly ask if anyone else can help them find
the correct answer. Do this for each problem on the worksheet. Then, have students hand in their papers. (5
minutes)

MODIFICATIONS:

● Students who are struggling to master the objective will be given simpler equations to begin with and they will
receive more one-on-one time with the teacher to help them catch up.
● Students who are ready to move on or finish early will be given the choice of extra practice equations or a fun
math related activity sheet. These students may also be asked to volunteer to help a classmate that is struggling
with the objective.
