General Course Information

LAN 076: Italian – Beginners level II

Course Overview

This course is intended for students who have already completed the first course
of Italian at UCY or students that have already developed a certain level
competency in the language due to previous exposure to the language. In this
course, students will continue the learning of basic language patterns and
vocabulary. Repetition and comprehensible are important components of the
course. Elements of Italian culture will form an integral part of the course and will
be taught through the use of multiple media. In addition to conventional grammar
and written exercises, students will be exposed to a range of authentic audio-
visual material in order to strengthen elements learned in class.
Homework assignments are a compulsory part of this course. Active participation
is required.

Course Learning Objectives:

Based on the A1 level as defined by CEFR (Common European Framework of


Reference for Languages), the learning objectives of this course include students’
understanding of a variety of written and oral texts and the use of simple syntactic
structures to express themselves both in written and spoken Italian. A range of
different situations will be given requiring both the exchange of everyday
information and expressions.

Listening comprehension
Students will be able to understand the general meaning and the more important
details of conversations and dialogues about different topics on everyday life with
frequent and basic vocabulary related to areas of personal relevance.
Spoken production
Students will be able to interact in a variety of familiar situations, describing facts
and people in simple terms.

Reading comprehension
Students will be able to understand the general meaning and some important
details of texts on different topics with simple structures.

Writing
Students will be able to write simple texts (informal letters, notes, messages and
short descriptions).

Course Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students should be able to perform a variety of


communicative functions with accuracy and fluency according to A1 + level as
defined by CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Communicative functions

1. Talk about food habits and ask/give information about food and other products.
2. Express the presence or non presence of something (c’è – ci sono) and
express quantity.
3. Narrate a biography and talk about past events.
4. Give news and properly react.
5. Express position of objects, describe a city ask and give information on places.
6. Talk about past travels and make comments and travel habits.
7. Have a conversation in a shop.
8. Talk about clothes, accessories and style.
9. Give advices, ask and give permission to do something; express obligation and
needs.

Morphology and syntax structures

1. Partitive articles.
2. Direct pronouns and partitive pronoun ne.
3. Expression c’è – ci sono and manca – mancano.
4. Indefinitive adjectives.
5. Impersonal construction.
6. Prepositions with and without articles (II part).
7. Past tense (Passato prossimo) of regular verbs and of most used irregular
verbs.
8. Past tense (Passato prossimo) of reflexive verbs.
9. Adverbs (II part).
10. Modal Verbs (volere, potere, dovere)
11. Imperative form (I part) and imperative form+pronouns.

Course Regulations and Policies:

Attendance and Punctuality:

Students are required to come to lesson every day and in time. In case students
have specific problems not allowing them to attend lessons they should inform the
teacher in advance, and the teacher will decide if the reason is acceptable or not.
Participation grade takes in consideration attendance, punctuality, behavior and
active participation to the activities.
Students not attending lessons will get a 0/10 as a Participation grade. Some
absences due to certified health problems or other sort of serious problems will be
accepted.

Exams:

Students who cannot sit exams must inform the teacher in advance or as soon as
possible. Only certified severe health or family problems will be considered as a
valid reason for being allowed to sit exam in a different time.

Course Assignments:
Four graded homework will be assigned during the course.
Late or not delivered assignments will be graded as 0/10.
All the other tasks given during the semester will not be graded, even though
compulsory.

Mobile Phones & Other Devices:


Students are required to bring to class every day their own smartphone or tablet,
connected to the Internet, in order to be able to participate to online activities.
Every other use of them is forbidden in class.

Academic Integrity

Course supplementary materials added in Blackboard is intended for solely use of


students. They can print them down, but they are not allowed to distribute such
material to any other person with or without a monetary compensation.

Written Communication:
Students can contact the teacher through the internal Blackboard e-mail only.
Students are required to get access to the Blackboard every day and check if there
are information, communications, tasks, assignments. The Blackboard is the
official way of communication between teacher and students.
Students are also required to check often their UCY e-mail, for more urgent and
official information.
