INTRODUCTION TO
COSENTINO

spanish group;
global leader
1940s Spain saw the birth of a momentous family story, whose
tale was at first written in marble and today is written in quartz,
as the leading international manufacturer and distributor of
worktops made from these materials. The company is the
Cosentino Group; a group created by members of the
Martínez-Cosentino family who across several generations, have
learnt to use their family values in order to create a strong and
united company with a marked international presence.

Although nowadays everyone claims that internationalisation is

the way forward, the Cosentino Group has been aware of this for
years. It started its world-wide journey in the mid-1980s,
opening its first branches in Europe. Today, it has affiliates in
North America, Holland, Brazil, U.K., Germany, Portugal,
Switzerland, Belgium, Scandinavia and France – a global market
which constitutes 70% of the Group’s turnover.

Cosentino’s success is largely due to its qualitative principals of

innovation and research, an adventurous spirit applied with
intelligence and respect for the environment which has led it on
countless occasions to leave its mark on architectural and
decorative works, both in commercial and residential buildings.

INTRODUCTION TO SILESTONE

INTRODUCTION TO
SILESTONE

a brand
of international prestige
The Silestone® brand was patented in 1990 and since then Cosentino has become the
undisputed global leader of the production of quartz surfaces, with numerous
applications both in architecture and interior design. Silestone® consists of a high
percentage of natural quartz, a material as beautiful as it is resistant, with an elegant
appearance and a superior quality to natural stone.

Cosentino is extremely well-known both in the national and international markets,

exporting 70% of Silestone® products to over 50 countries as the leading world wide
brand of kitchen and bathroom surfaces. The American and Spanish markets constitute the
majority of Silestone® sales. Pioneers, also, in advertising strategies, Silestone® was the
first Spanish brand ever to be advertised at the prestigious Superbowl and also the first
kitchen worktop company to advertise on Spanish television. Silestone® an enterprising
brand with international prestige.

SILESTONE

silestone ®

the material
Silestone® was patented in 1990 initially launched in
1992. In just a few years, it has become known by
professionals and designers for its first-rate products.

Quartz is the chosen material for the creation of

Silestone® slabs, which consist mostly of natural
quartz . This resilient stone is formed by the
magmatic crystallisation of limestone.

Only diamond, sapphire and topaz are superior to

quartz in terms of durability. Furthermore, this stone
is resistant to acids and offers a range of shades and
colours, which makes it the ideal option for a variety
of design and decoration projects. Silestone® does
not need sealants to maintain its shine and it can
endure average cooking temperatures without
fracturing or burning.

It is completely versatile and can be used for any

interior project. In addition to being an excellent
surface for kitchens and bathrooms, it works very well
for covering flooring surfaces and walls on account of
its resistance to heat and scratches and its low rate of
liquid absorption. With Silestone®, the only limit is
your imagination.

ARCHITECTURE
The motto of sustainable architecture is the 4“Rs” principle: recycling,
recovering, reusing and reason. Cosentino invests in this environmental policy
through innovation, R&D and the promotion of ideas and solutions which include
sustainability and environmental respect.

Cosentino actively encourages the use of recycled and recovered materials, waste
and the reuse of architectural materials.
SILESTONE SPACES

Hygiene in hospitals is paramount. Until recently, materials such

as stoneware, tiles and stainless steel were used in these types of
buildings. They have subsequently given way to ceramic, glass,
high-density resins or Silestone®, which can be installed in walls,
worktops, counters, window ledges, bar surfaces, embedded
washbasins and surfaces in constant contact with water such as
laboratory furniture and desks Silestone® is also specified for
sterilised areas and those spaces where food is prepared.

Thanks to the antibacterial technology, hygiene is guaranteed

and the growth of fungi, bacteria and other harmful
micro-organisms is avoided. It is important to note that
Silestone® is highly resistant to chemical substances like
sulphuric acid as is shown in its ASTM certificates.

SILESTONE
®

THROUGHOUT
THE WORLD

distinctive works by architects of international prestige.
Architects throughout the whole world refer to Silestone® to execute their projects.
Silestone® can be found in many distinguished buildings and places, for example London’s
Wembley Stadium (the work surfaces in the dining room and the players’ changing rooms);
the Agbar Tower in Barcelona (interior spaces); the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai (10,000 m2
of different-coloured Silestone® spread over worktops, countertops, flooring, stairs and
elevators); Tel Aviv airport (2,000 m2 of In addition to this, the range of shades and the

and the Porto metro station in Madrid, where Silestone® is used to outline the safety signs
for passengers. These examples are yet further proof of the wide range of possibilities
that Silestone® has to offer.

An exceptional project of sustainable architecture in

which Silestone® is involved is the R4 House,
bio-climatic dwellings built with reused materials. The
project manager is the architect Luis de Garrido and it
is coordinated by the Asociación Nacional de
Arquitectura Sostenible (ANAS), the Asociación
Nacional para la Vivienda del Futuro (ANVF) and the
Directorio Nacional de Empresas para la Arquitectura

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another advantage of using Silestone® is its easy maintenance
and cleaning. You will only need a dry cloth to remove dirt as long
as there is not much grease. In the event that the surface is greasy
or has stubborn stains, you will need a Scrub sponge
(polypropylene type) and a a few drops of dish-washing detergent.

In order to clean the surface more thoroughly, we recommend a

specific cleaner for Silestone® worktops such as Q-FORCE (for
marble fabricators and professionals) or Q-ACTION (for individual
and consumer use).

You should not use products such as waxes, sprays or sealants

which in the long term will cause Silestone® to lose its shine.

PROPER USE

PROPER USE

guarantee
In order to make the most of
Silestone® properties, it is advisable
to follow the instructions for use
and the guidelines provided by the
manufacturer.
023
SILESTONE ARCHITECTURAL
PROPER USE
RECOMMENDATIONS ACCORDING
TO SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS
Surface preparation.
Please ensure that the surface is levelled, dry, properly fixed, solid and resistant to compression. YIt is important to check
it is free from grease, wax, varnish, dust or any other material which may affect adhesion.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Environmental conditions
Environmental and humidity conditions must be in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines. Working between temperatures
ranging from 10º to 30º is recommended.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adhesive characteristics
Due to the high expansion coefficient of Silestone®, the use of expanding cement will be required. Because Silestone is non-porous,
normal cements which set through water evaporation (physical drying) should not be used. Therefore, only cements which dry
chemically must be used. The cement dries due to chemical reactions and is not affected by contact with air. We recommend
Pegoland Fast Fluido (Puma), Granirapid (Mapei) and Ardex X7 g PLUS (Ardex).

The suppliers will be able to suggest specific products which are suitable for a given application, taking into account the
characteristics of the CONTROL Forms.SpinButton.1 \s job and the type of fitting required. Always check with the supplier.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mixture
The cement should be mixed according to the amounts recommended by the manufacturer. It is important to work with the
manufacturers specific fixing instructions to ensure a perfect result. The temperature of the area must be taken into consideration
nominally between 10-30°C
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adhesive application
Use double bonding (applying adhesive both in the support base and the underside of the slab). The adhesive must be applied over
the support base by the smooth edge of the trowel. A second coat should be applied with the toothed part to ensure the cement is
spread evenly over the surface. Do not exceed the thickness recommended by the manufacturer or spread more than 2 m at a time
2

to prevent the cement setting before the Silestone® is installed.

Whilst the cement is setting, any source of heat should be avoided in order to not damage the slabs (air-conditioning, heated floors,
direct sun exposure, etc.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Installation
The slabs must be clean and dry and that the cement has not set. Place the slab on the cement an lightly bedded in using a rubber
hammer. Use spacers to maintain the joints between the slabs. Silestone must never be laid without allowing for joints between the
pieces. Joints of 2mm are recommended for small sizes (30 x 30cm) The bigger the format of the slab, the bigger the separation joints
should be. For special projects and sizes larger than 60 x 60cm it is important to seek advice from the manufacturer.

Choosing the size of a joint does not only depend on the dimension but on the environmental conditions of the inner space and the
adhesive cement properties. Therefore, manufacturer instructions must be followed.

The structural and perimetral joints should always be respected, both in the support and in the covering. The sealing of these joints
should be carried out with elastic materials or those with suitable prefabricated structures. It is recommended to leave a perimetral
joint of 5 mm between the flooring and the vertical structures. Expansion joints in interior floors, every 30 m2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Grouting
It is advisable to use cement or expoxy based materials. Cements match better with colours and are easier to apply and clean. Epoxy
based material are especially recommended for spaces for areas of low porosity and where joints need to be highly resistant to
chemical ingress

You should install the grouting 24 hours after placing the slabs. Grouting material should be applied with a flat rubber trowel, a
spatula or a special gun.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cleaning
Before the grouting has dried, it should be cleaned with a wet sponge, it is important to remove all surplus grouting material
immediately with a dry cloth or a rubber spatula.

DURABILITY
CLEANING RECOMMENDATIONS
Silestone® surfaces require basic maintenance. However, if we wish to keep them in their original condition, these simple recommenda-
tions should be followed:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Daily cleaning:
We recommend using Q-Action for the daily cleaning of Silestone® or water and neutral soap if not available.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Grease stains:
Apply a small amount of Q-FORCE or Q-Action on the stain and scrub with a non-metallic scourer until it disappears. (If these products
are not available then an all purpose household surface cleaner can be used.) Then rinse with water.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Water lime stains:
Apply limescale remover to the surface and leave for 1 minute. Rinse with water. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for
usage. Do not apply on other products (taps, sink, etc.) as it could affect their finish.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Silicone stains:
Use a blade and a little mild solvent (not dichloromethane and methane dichloride etc.). Rinse with water.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stubborn stains:
For difficult stains leave Q-force (or similar) on the area affected for 2 minutes and scrub well with a non-metallic scourer. (If you do not
have Q-Force, use Q-Action for 4 minutes.) Then rinse with plenty of water.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shine loss:
The loss of gloss on the Silestone surface can be due to the application of waxes, sprays, and sealants, etc. in order to enhance a gloss:
With continued application the effect of these products is lost. The original “factory finish” can be restored by thoroughly cleaning the
surface following the processes listed in this document.
