Objective

• To remove scales, loose materials iron cuttings etc. that
might have been entrapped in super heaters, re-heaters
and steam piping during manufacture, storage and
erection.
• Failing to removing these debris may damage turbine
blades, valves etc.

• The steam blowing will carried in different stages.
Proposal

• Steam Blowing shall be done in four broad stages viz Stage (1a
& 1b), (2a & 2b), (3a & 3b) and 4.
• Puffing Method: shall be adopted for steam blowing of stages
1a, 1b, 2a and 2b in which boiler drum pr. raised to 50 kg/cm2
and then released through quick opening of valve and steam
blowing till drum pressure drops to 25 kg/cm2.
• Continuous Blowing Method: shall be used for stages 3a, 3b

and 4. Duration of each blow is to be around 20-30 mins and 2
hrs time gap before the next blow.

• Stage 1a: SH, MS lines up to ESVs, temporary lines from ESVs
to EOTVs to CRH lines, CRH lines to Re-heater inlet and
temporary lines to exhaust. All tap off lines from CRH shall
remain closed/ isolated/ blanked.
• Stage 1b: SH, MS lines, HP bypass lines, CR lines up to Re-
heater inlet and temporary lines to exhaust. EOTVs shall be
kept closed and HOTVs fully opened. Boiler stop valves shall

be used for blowing.
• Stage 2a: SH, MS lines up to ESVs, temporary lines from ESVs
to EOTVs to CRH lines, CRH lines, Re-heater, HRH lines to IVs,
temporary lines from IVs to exhaust. CRH lines, SH and Re-
heater attemperators shall be welded. LP bypass line blanked.

• Stage 2b: SH, MS lines up to ESVs, temporary lines from ESVs
to EOTVs to CRH lines, CRH lines, Re-heater, HRH lines, LP
bypass lines with temporary exhaust pipe.
• Stage 3a: CRH line to TDBFP-A ESV. Steam valve of PRDS line
will be kept closed.
• Stage 3b: CRH line to TDBFP-B ESV. Steam valve of PRDS line

• 4d: CRH to extraction 4 to Deaerator
• 4e: CRH to Deaerator/FST
• 4f: CRH to HP heaters 6A & 6B

• 4h: CRH to PRDS to Aux Steam Header
• 4i: MS to PRDS to Aux Steam Header
• 4j: SH and RH spray lines
• Note: Steam Blowing of sub stages 4h & 4i shall be done prior
to blowing of sub-stages 4a & 4b.

• First steam blow for each of each stage 1a, 1b, 2a & 2b is given
at a lower pressure drum pressure 25 kg/cm2.
• For future blowing the steam, raise the boiler drum pressure
up to 50 kg/cm2, shut off boiler firing and open EOTVs or
Boiler M.S stop valves (as per scheme) and follow the normal
puffing method.
• Drum level shall be maintained at its lowest limit before the

start of each blow to avoid water droplets carryover with
saturated steam.
• A standard practice: Number of blows per day are limited to 8
with an interval of 1½ hrs. for cooling in addition to overnight
cooling to avoid thermal stresses.

• Furnace exit temperature should be limited up to 540oC to
safeguard the SH and RH coils.
• For Stages 3a, 3b & 4, we shall increase the Drum pressure up
to 20 kg/cm2 and continuous blowing method shall be used.
Minimum no. of 3 blows are given for each sub-stage 4c to 4j
at an interval of 1 hr.

• For Stages 1a, 1b, 2a, 3a, 3b, 4a & 4b there should not be
more than 5 pitting marks on SS Target plate in the central
zone and no deformed edges in 3 consecutive plates.
• Moreover, for stages 1a and 2a Disturbance Factor at selected
locations should not be less than 1.4.
• For Stage 2b minimum 8 numbers of blows are to be given.

• For Stages 4c to 4j steam blowing is declared to be complete
on the basis of visual observation. Minimum 3 no. of blows
shall be given for each sub-stage.
