THERMAL POWER PLANT

1. Calculate the velocity of steam at the outlet of a nozzle in which the steam has been
expanded from an initial condition 10 bar absolute dry to a pressure of 0.7 bar. Given from
Mollier Diagram, the enthalpy at 10 bar is 665 kcal/kg and the enthalpy at 0.7 bar is 558
kcal/kg.
(a) consider there is no friction
(b) consider there is friction loss for 10% of the heat drop.
2. Steam at a pressure of 7 and 0.9 dry expands through a nozzle. The throat area of nozzle is
4.7cm2. Given enthalpy at 7 bar and 0.9 dry is 612 kcal/kg and enthalpy at 4.039 bar is 592
kcal/kg at a dry fraction 0.88.
*At 4.039 bar for saturated steam the specific volume is 0.471 m3/kg.
Calculate the maximum mass of steam flow per second (kg/s).
3. A thermal station is provided with the following data; 2 kg of coal is burnt for every kWh
generation and efficiency of thermal station is 20%. Calculate the calorific value of coal.
4. Calculate the coal consumption per hour for the following power station at its rated output.
- generating capacity = 100MWh
- calorific value of coal = 5000 kcal/kg
- thermal efficiency of the plant = 25%
- electrical efficiency = 90%
