PHY F341/PHY G531 Test 1 (Closed book) Time: 1 hr

Solid State Physics Date: 22/02/2017 Time: 2 PM - 3 PM Max. Marks: 40

1) (a) Define Bravais lattice.

(b) For a tetragonal crystal system, the base centered and face centered tetragonal have not
been included in the Bravais lattice. Explain why?
(c) In each of the following cases indicate whether the structure is a Bravais lattice with
reasons. If not describe it as Bravais lattice with a primitive basis. (i) a square lattice with
additional points at the centers of the vertical faces (ii) a square lattice with additional
points at the midpoints of the lines joining nearest neighbours. [3+3+5]

2) (a) A two dimensional direct lattice is formed from a repetition of points ABCD (see figure)
with AB = CD = 3Å, AD = BC = 5 Å and the angle BAD = 60º. Find the reciprocal
lattice vectors and draw the corresponding cell in the reciprocal lattice.

(b) What is Ewald construction? Explain with the help of a neat diagram. Use the
construction to derive Bragg’s law.
(c) Construct the first three Brillouin zones of a 2D hexagonal reciprocal lattice in a neat
diagram. [5 x 3 =15]

3) (a) Consider a line of atoms ABAB…AB, with an A-B bond length of a/2. The form factors
are fA and fB for atoms A, B respectively. What is the corresponding structure factor?
(b) The space lattice corresponding to NaCl is fcc. Find the geometrical structure factor for
NaCl crystal with the basis referred to that of a conventional cube.
(c) Discuss the allowed and forbidden reflections. Name three planes which can be missing
from the x-ray diffraction pattern. [3+6+5]
