Philosophy Final Term

Lesson 5- Freedom of a Human Person

 We all have freewill.


 Freedom is part of Transcendence
 Freedom consists of going beyond our limitations

Aristotle- ‘’All actions have consequences”’


Volition- The power you have to decide

Through will, reason will be translated into action.


Practical intellect guides will by enlightening it,

We are responsible for our moral acts.

St. Thomas Aquinas- Love is freedom


Human beings have spiritual and body elements.
Though our spirituality we have a conscience.
All humans have a destiny to transcend. By following
God’s plan we can have a righteous life.
We need cooperation with God to have the power of
change. Change should also promote the good of the
community.

Aquinas’ Four Laws


 Eternal law- The decree of God that governs all
creation.
 Natural Law- We have inherent goodness. We are
inclined to conserve human life.
 Divine Law- We need divine guidance on how to
perform proper acts
 Human Law

Jean Paul Sartre- “Existence Precedes Essence”


(Man is born into this world with no predetermined
purpose)
Individual Freedom
Based on existentialism (Importance of human
experience, everyone is responsible for their own
actions).
Humans choose and build their own destiny.
Believe that free individual choice is important.
To be human is to be free to imagine and to choose.
