Q 1: ...(2 marks)
What are the two main things required for osmosis?
A 1:
The two main things required for osmosis are as follows:
(i) A semi-permeable membrane
(ii) Concentration of water molecules

Q 2: ...(2 marks)
Draw a neat labelled diagram of stomata.

A 2:

Q 3: ...(2 marks)
"The wool being knitted into a sweater is a physical change." Justify the statement.

A 3:
The wool being knitted into a sweater is a physical change due to the following reasons:
(i) No new compound is formed during this change.
(ii) This change is reversible, i.e., we can get back the wool from the sweater.
(iii) During the process of knitting the sweater, no heat energy is released or absorbed.

Why does a desert cooler cool better on a hot dry day?
A 4:
In a desert cooler, the three sides have aerated grass pads and a fan on the front side. Water is circulated
along the three sides of the cooler. The hot air that enters into the cooler evaporates the water inside it and
becomes cool. Then, cool air is pushed out which cools the room. A desert cooler cool better on a dry and
hot summer day because dryness of air and high temperature increases the rate of evaporation of water
and so it cools better.

Q 5: ...(2 marks)
Kinetic energies of particles of water in three jars A, B and C are EA, EB and EC respectively and EA > EB >
EC. Arrange the temperatures TA, TB, TC of water in the three jars in increasing order and explain.

A 5:
Given: EA > EB > EC
The kinetic energy of particles increases with increase in temperature. Therefore, the particles with more
kinetic energy must be having more temperature.
Therefore, the increasing order of temperature in the three jars is TA > TB > TC
Q 6: ...(2 marks)
State the reason for introducing Italian bee variety in bee-keeping.
A 6:
The reasons for introducing Italian bee variety in bee-keeping are as follows:
1) The Italian bees have high honey collection capacity.
2) They sting somewhat less.
3) The Italian bees stay in a given beehive for long periods and breed very well.

Q 7: ...(2 marks)
What is Genetic Manipulation?
A 7:
Genetic manipulation is one way of improving the crop and is done by introducing a gene that would
provide the desired characteristics. Crop variety improvement is done for higher yield, improved quality,
biotic and abiotic resistance, etc.

Q 8: ...(2 marks)
Write the similarities and differences between mitochondria and plastids.
A 8:
Similarities between mitochondria and plastids are as follows:
(i) Mitochondria and plastids have their own DNA and ribosomes.
(ii) Plastids are similar to mitochondria in external structure.

Differences between mitochondria and plastids are as follows:

(i) Mitochondria are present in both plant and animal cells, while plastids are present in plant cells only.
(ii) Plastids play an important role in photosynthesis, while mitochondria are not involved in
photosynthesis.

Q 9: ...(2 marks)
What is centrifugation and distillation?

A 9:
Centrifugation: It is the technique used to separate denser particles from the lighter ones. The principle is
that the denser particles are forced to the bottom and the lighter particles stay at the top when spun
rapidly. The components of some of the colloids can be separated by centrifugation.

Distillation: It is the method used for separating components of a mixture containing two miscible liquids
that boil without decomposition and have sufficient difference in their boiling points. Liquids,

Why is osmosis known as a special type of diffusion?
A 10:
Diffusion is the process where molecules move from an area of high concentration to an area of low
concentration. The molecules can be of gases or liquids. However, a special term 'osmosis' is used to refer
to the movement of water molecules from higher concentration to lower concentration. Hence, osmosis is
a special type of diffusion.

Explain how Newton's third law of motion applies to the upward force on the rocket and to the force on
the hot gases.
A 11:
Newton's third law of motion: To every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction and they act on
two different bodies.
A rocket moves upwards when hot gases rush out of the jet. The hot gases rushing out of the rocket is the
action and due to the equal and opposite reaction, the rocket moves upwards.

A student was given a mixture of iron fillings and sulphur. He was asked to heat it and then answer the
following questions:
1. What is the colour of compound formed?
2. Write effect of magnet on it.
3. Write the effect of carbon disulphide on it.
4. Describe the effect of adding dilute hydrochloric acid on it.
Identify the gas and write properties of it.

A 12:
1) The colour of the compound formed is black.
2) The magnet cannot attract the iron from the compound.
3) There is no effect of carbon disulphide on the compound. It cannot dissolve the sulphur in the
compound.
4) On adding dilute hydrochloric acid, a gas is produced.
The gas is hydrogen sulphide. It is a colourless gas with the smell of rotten eggs.

Q 13: ...(3 marks)

Compare between desi cow and jersey cow.
A 13:

Desi cow Jersey cow

(i) Desi cow is the Indian breed of cow. (i) Jersey cow is an exotic breed of cow.

(ii) It has short lactation period. (ii) It has long lactation period.

(iii) It shows excellent resistance to (iii) It shows lesser resistance to diseases as compared to desi
diseases. cow.

(iv) The nutritional value of milk is more. (iv) The nutritional value of milk is less.

Give any 6 examples of use of filtration in daily life.

A 14:
Examples of use of filtration in daily life are as follows:
(i) In separation of tea leaves from tea, strainer acts as a filter.
(ii) In vacuum cleaner, a filter is used to trap dust.
(iii) In water purifiers, a filter is used to trap dust particles.
(iv) In air conditioners, filters are used to remove dust from air.
(v) In cars, various filters are used for various purposes.
(vi) In exhaust, a filter is used to trap the suspended particles of the smoke.

How can we separate a mixture of sand and iodine crystals?
A 16:
We can separate a mixture of sand and iodine crystals by heating it. The mixture is heated in a china dish
and the china dish is covered with an inverted funnel. The opening of the funnel is closed with a cotton
plug. Iodine sublimes on heating i.e. it gets converted directly from solid state to gaseous state. The iodine
vapours after cooling get converted into solid iodine and sand remains behind in the china dish.

Differentiate between nucleus and nucleoid.

A 17:

Nucleus Nucleoid

Nucleus has a membrane around it which Nucleoid is just the irregularly shaped region in the
separates the nucleus from the cytoplasm. cytoplasm which does not have a membrane.

It is present in the eukaryotic cells. It is present in the prokaryotic cells.

Nucleolus and nucleoplasm are present inside

Nucleic acid is present inside the nucleoid.
