The following paragraph numbers refer to API STD 613, Fifth Edition, February 2003,
which is part of this Specification. The text in each paragraph below is an addition to
API STD 613 unless it is noted as an exception or modification. Paragraph numbers not
appearing in API STD 613 are new paragraphs inserted in numerical order.
1 General
1.1 Scope
1.1.1 This Specification, together with the gear unit Data Sheet, defines the
mandatory requirements for special purpose gear units. Special purpose gear
units shall be used when the rated power exceeds 2,250 kW (3,000 HP) or
when the pitch line velocity is 61 m/s (12,000 ft/min) or higher.

1.7 (Clarification) The vendor shall specify his compliance to the applicable
International Standards (e.g., API, ISO, JIS, ASME, ASTM) depending on
his point of manufacturing and sub-suppliers.
2 Basic Design
2.1 General
2.1.6 Equipment sound pressure level, when measured at a distance of one meter
during Shop test at rated speed and maximum test power, shall not exceed
the following:
a) 90 dB(A) for units with a pitch line velocity of 150 m/s (29,500 ft/min)
or greater.
b) 87 dB(A) for units with pitch line velocity between 120 to 150 m/s
(23,600 ft/min to 29,500 ft/min).
c) 85 dB(A) for units with pitch line velocity of 120 m/s (23,600 ft/min)
or less.
Control of the sound pressure to meet these requirements shall be the sole
responsibility of the Vendor. External acoustic insulation is not acceptable.
2.1.10 All electrical equipment, instrumentation and wiring shall be suitable for the
electrical area classification specified on the Data Sheet.
2.1.14 Unless otherwise specified in the datasheet, the equipment will be installed

2.2 Rating
2.2.1.1 When the unit is driven by a synchronous motor, the Vendor with train
responsibility shall confirm the torque fluctuations derived from the transient
torsional analysis in addition to its rated power consumption and shall
submit this data to the gear manufacturer and to the buyer. The minimum
acceptable design life for synchronous motor driven gear units passing
through torsional resonances during startup shall be 1,000 starts.
2.2.3.1 Gears service factor shall be per Table 3 of API STD 613.
2.2.4.4 The Vendor shall state the L/d ratio in his proposal.
2.2.4.5 (Correction) The units for deflection limits are mm not micrometers.
2.3 Casings
2.5.2.2 (Modification) The tooth contact shall be checked only in the job casing at
the vendor shop and shall conform to acceptable contact pattern. The results
of the contact check shall be preserved and included it in the manual.

2.5.4 Shafts
2.5.4.4(a) (Exception) The total combined electrical and mechanical runout for areas to
be observed by radial vibration sensors shall not exceed:
9 micrometers (0.35 mils) for rated shaft speeds up to 3600 RPM;
6 micrometers (0.25 mils) for rated shaft speeds exceeding 3600 RPM.
2.6 Dynamics
2.6.5.1 The vendor with train responsibility shall supply the torsional analysis
torque values, including pulse torque, to the gear vendor.
2.6.6.2 Balancing machine calibration certificate submitted with the final residual
unbalance records is an acceptable alternative to the residual unbalance
check of Appendix “G” procedure.
2.6.6.8 (Exception) The permissible compensation for actual runout shall not exceed
the values stated in 2.5.4.4.
2.7.1 General
2.7.1.1 The bearing metal temperature shall not exceed 105°C in the loaded area
based on a maximum oil inlet temperature of 60°C. During shop testing, the
differential between the bearing loaded area metal temperature and the actual
oil inlet temperature shall not exceed 45°C.
2.7.3.1 (Exception) Details of gears not having thrust bearings shall be submitted
through the Company or Buyer Representative for review and approval.

2.7.4.4 Shaft oil seals shall be horizontally split and accessible for removal without
removing shafts or coupling.
2.8 Lubrication
2.8.2 (Modification) The gear unit shall be designed to limit the maximum lube oil
differential temperature to 30°C. The design oil inlet temperature shall be
60°C.
2.8.3 The lube oil system shall be supplied by the Vendor having unit
responsibility for the equipment train.
2.8.4 Unless otherwise specified, the lube oil shall be ISO VG 46.
2.8.6 Unless otherwise specified, the common lube oil shall be ISO VG 46.
Information on the nameplate shall be engraved. It shall also include the year
of manufacturing.
