Titration Application Note T–90

Photometric EDTA titration of

zinc sulfate according to
Ph. Eur. and USP

This Application Note details the photometric determination of zinc sulfate using
the Optrode (610 nm). Complexometric titration of zinc requires an EDTA titrant
and Eriochrome Black T as indicator. The method fully complies with Ph. Eur.
and USP.

Solutions

Titrant Dissolve 37.224 g

c(Na2EDTA) = Na2EDTA•2H2O in dist.
0.1 mol/L water, add 10 mL c(NaOH)
= 1 mol/L and make up to
1 L with dist. water.

Indicator Dissolve 100 mg Eriochrome

Eriochrome black T Black T (CAS 1787-61-7) in
100 mL dist. water.

Buffer Solution Dissolve 54 g NH4Cl and

NH3/NH4Cl, pH = 10 300 mL w(NH3) = 25 % in
dist. water and make up to
1 L.

Analysis
Weigh approx. 0.150 g sample into a beaker and
dissolve in 100 mL dist. H2O. Add 5 mL buffer solution
and 0.15 mL Eriochrome Black T indicator and titrate
with c(Na2EDTA) = 0.1 mol/L past the first endpoint.
