1. ROLE/TASK - In your own words, summarize what your task with this role is/was and attach your
completed role sheet.

My job was to pick some quotes from the book and then to start a discussion about those quotes.

Passage 1 Page # _____

Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot
become conscious. Book 1, ch 7, paragraph 4

Reason for choosing this passage

I think it is an interesting and ironical sentence which really interprets even our society today.

Plan for discussion – to ask them to comment and to direct them to recognize the irony and
contemporary aspect of the quote, if needed

Passage 2 Page # _____

"Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past," repeated
Winston obediently. "Who controls the present controls the past," said O'Brien, nodding his head
with slow approval. "Is it your opinion, Winston, that the past has real existence?" (3.2.39-40)

Reason for choosing this passage the way it shows how everything is connected and interferes
with each other is amazingly shown in this quote. It shows how we are affected by people before us,
and how inevitably responsible we are for the future generations.

Plan for discussion to ask if they agree with the quote

Passage 3 Page # _______

war is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength

Reason for choosing this passage it's the slogan of the party and actually brings the real
meaning of all regimes to us

Plan for discussion – just let them explain how they see it and see if they can connect it to anything
contemporary

2. How much did you participate in the discussion about this book?

A about the right amount B too much C not at all D too little

3. What did you do well during your literature discussion? (asked good questions, responded to
others, supported my ideas using the book, took a risk, compared the book to my life or other
books)

I compared it to real life situations and political movements.

4. What was an important contribution you made to the discussion?

I think all of us mostly just connected the book with contemporary society and near past, and so did
I.

5. What was an important idea or explanation expressed by someone else in the group during the
discussions? (Identify the person and tell what he/she said.)

''It twists every common sense 180 degrees'', by Tomislav, regarding my last quote. Saying that,
actually, every political regime twists every common sense 180 degrees.

6. What group strategies did your group use well? (participating, staying on topic, contributing
appropriate information, encouraging others to contribute, being considerate of others' opinions,
asking for clarification, summarizing, using appropriate introductory phrases/phrases to express
opinion, agreement or disagreement)

contributing appropriate information, summarizing, discussing while still being tolerant (considering
we are all politically very different)

7. What strategies did your group struggle with?

asking for clarification, encouraging others to contribute

8. Suggestions/comments/goals for next literature circle discussion?

Maybe not to give people roles and just see where the discussion will lead to.
