Le noir et la lumière
O
mniprésent dans l’horlogerie comme dans la vie, le noir est aussi le thème du
Watch Photo Awards en octobre, initiative de notre maison d’édition relayée
par des médias du monde entier depuis six mois. Les 60 photos de montres
sélectionnées depuis mai (sur les thèmes du Bleu, Sport, Vacances, A deux ou quatre
roues, A table et Noir) sont exposées du 1er au 10 novembre au Musée d’Art et d’His-
toire de Genève, dans le cadre de l’exposition du Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) dont
GMT est également partenaire média. Bravo aux amoureux de belle horlogerie qui voient leurs
œuvres photographiques ainsi publiées et exposées. Si le noir sert de fil conducteur à ce numéro
d’automne, la lumière attend les lauréats du GPHG. GMT en présente les favoris et offre son
catalogue officiel à ses lecteurs, qui pourront suivre la cérémonie de remise des prix en direct sur

son. Dans un tout autre style, la collection Heart Beat symbolise l’essor d’un champion du luxe
accessible qui fête son 30e anniversaire cette année, Frédérique Constant. Vous avez dit Luminor
et cadrans noirs ? Le nouveau CEO de Panerai va vous éclairer. La lumière, c’est encore celle qui
rayonne sur les visages de millions de fans à la seule évocation de leur nom : Patek Philippe et
Rolex. Leurs approches de la chronométrie échappent peut-être à la plupart d’entre eux, et nous
procédons à leur analyse. Enfin, ayons une pensée pour celui qui a contribué pendant 45 ans à
rendre l’horlogerie plus lumineuse, tout en imaginant des montres « all black » : Jean-Claude

Black and light

E
ver-present in watchmaking as in life itself, black is also the October theme of
the Watch Photo Awards : an initiative launched by our publishing house and
echoed by media around the world for the past six months. The 60 watch photos
selected since May (respectively themed The Blue, Sport, Holidays, On Two Wheels or
Four, Food and Drink and The Black) are on show from November 1st to 11th at the Musée
d’art et d’histoire de Genève, as part of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) exhibition
for which GMT is also serving as media partner. Congratulations to the devotees of fine watch-
making whose photos are thus published and displayed. While black is the guiding thread of
this fall issue, the GPHG will be very much in the limelight at the prize-giving. GMT presents
the competition favorites and gifts the official catalog to its readers, who will be able to follow
the ceremony live on worldtempus.com, which will provide an analysis of the results. Our editorial
team is also turning the spotlight on several iconic collections that are nonetheless under-
estimated by the public at large. The one appearing on our magazine cover, the Grande Seconde
by Jaquet Droz, shows the moon in a whole new light… Recurrently featured in the GPHG, the
Octo Finissimo by Bulgari submits its skeleton version to the discerning gaze of our in-house
watchmaker. In an entirely different style, the Heart Beat collection symbolizes the rise of a

vec ses quatre nouvelles versions de Grande Se-
conde Moon à lune astronomique, Jaquet Droz
donne une nouvelle dimension à la mise en scène
des cercles qui sculptent ses cadrans depuis 280
ans. En 2018, la perfection de la géométrie se voit
enrichie de subtiles évolutions des volumes et des matières qui
métamorphosent la personnalité de cette montre par des couleurs
de cadrans et des boîtiers radicalement différents. Dans ses décli-
naisons masculines, la Grande Seconde Moon pare son cadran
double niveau d’émail Grand Feu, qu’il soit de couleur ivoire avec
boîtier en or gris, ou de couleur noire avec boîtier en or rose. Pour
les deux versions de 39mm, le boîtier en acier est non serti pour
le modèle avec cadran opalin et disque de lune en acier bleui, et
serti lorsqu’il contient un cadran aventurine avec disque de lune
en aventurine. Cette dernière version se distingue à double titre,
puisqu’elle symbolise une première dans la collection Grande Se-
conde, qui ne comportait auparavant aucun modèle féminin avec
phase de lune et verre aventurine. Or, ses inclusions argentées
rendent chaque verre unique, impliquant également l’unicité de
chacun de ces garde-temps aux cadrans scintillants.
Toute aussi mystérieuse mais au caractère sans doute plus
affirmé, la Grande Seconde Moon au cadran en émail Grand Feu
noir exhibe fièrement sa lune fondue dans le même or 22 carats
qui constitue sa bonne étoile à 1h, ainsi que son anneau ponctué
de dates. Avec cette nouveauté 2018 apte à séduire les femmes
autant que les hommes, la poésie n’éclipse pas la technologie.
D’ailleurs, la masse oscillante en or visible à travers le fond saphir
évoquerait presque le module lunaire d’Apollo. Spécialement conçu
pour la Grande Seconde Moon, le calibre Jaquet Droz 2660QL3 avec
échappement en silicium intègre le « mécanisme 135 » (pour sa
roue de 135 dents) développé en interne pour lui procurer une pré-
cision nettement supérieure à la moyenne des autres mouvements
indiquant les phases de lune. En effet, son discret correcteur sur
la carrure du boîtier ne devra être activé qu’une fois tous les 122
ans pour l’ajuster d’un jour. Comme l’affirme l’élégant slogan de
Jaquet Droz, « Some watches tell time, some tell a story » (Certaines
montres donnent l’heure, d’autres racontent une histoire).

ith its four new versions of the Grande
Seconde Moon with astronomical moon,
Jaquet Droz lends a new dimension to the
stage-setting of the circles that have been
sculpting its dials for 280 years. In 2018,
this geometrical perfection is enriched with subtle evolutions in
terms of volumes and materials, transforming the personality of
this watch by means of radically different dial and case colors. In
its masculine versions, the Grande Seconde Moon adorns its split-
level dial with Grand Feu enamel : ivory colored with a white gold
case, or black with a pink gold case. For the two 39mm versions,
the stainless steel case is non-gemset for the model with an opal-
ine dial and blued steel moon disk ; and gemset when framing an
aventurine dial with an aventurine moon disk. The latter version
stands out in two ways : it is the first ever ladies’ Grande Seconde
model to feature moon phases and aventurine glass ; while its sil-
ver-toned inclusions make each iteration truly unique, thereby
also rendering each of these timepieces with their shimmering
dials truly one of a kind.
Equally mysterious while radiating an even more distinctive
character, the Grande Seconde Moon with its black Grand Feu
enamel dial proudly flaunts its moon cast in the same 22K gold
composing its lucky star at 1 o’clock, as well as its ring bearing
the dates. With this 2018 new model liable to appeal to both men
and women, poetry does not eclipse technology. Indeed, the gold
oscillating weight visible through the sapphire caseback is subtly
reminiscent of the Apollo moon landing module. Specially devel-
oped for the Grande Seconde Moon, Jaquet Droz Caliber 2660QL3
with its silicon escapement incorporates the “135 mechanism”
(for its 135-toothed wheel) internally developed to ensure a level of
precision well above the average of the other movements driving
moon-phase indications. Its discreet corrector on the caseband
will require activation only once every 122 years to make a one-day
adjustment. As the elegant Jaquet Droz slogan proclaims : “Some
watches tell time, some tell a story”.

Jérôme Lambert
Jérôme Lambert poursuit son ascension dans le groupe Richemont,
dont il a été nommé CEO en septembre, après en avoir été le numéro
deux pendant un an et le chef des opérations pour les services centraux
et régionaux l’année précédente. Il avait dirigé Jaeger-LeCoultre depuis
2002 et Montblanc à partir de 2013.
Jérôme Lambert continues his rise within the Richemont group, of
which he was appointed CEO in September, after a year serving as Chief
Operating Officer and previously as Head of Operations responsible for
central and regional services. Prior to that he had been Chief Executive
Officer at Jaeger-LeCoultre between 2002 and 2013 and at Montblanc
since 2013.
Aldo Magada
Aldo Magada a accepté cet été le poste de CEO d’Anonimo dont
l’actionnaire avait acquis la marque Vulcain au printemps et lui en avait
déjà confié les rênes pour la relancer. Cet amateur de cigares s’est forgé
une longue expérience des montres chez Richemont, Breitling, Badollet
et dernièrement à la tête de Zenith.
Aldo Magada has accepted the position of CEO of Anonimo, whose
shareholder had acquired Vulcain last Spring and had already entrusted
him with the reins in order to relaunch the brand. This cigar aficionado
has acquired a wealth of experience in the watch industry with
Richemont, Breitling, Badollet and recently at the head of Zenith.

Patrick Pruniaux
Patrick Pruniaux voit sa confiance et son rôle
renforcés au sein de Kering qui lui a confié cet été la
casquette de CEO de Girard-Perregaux. Professionnel
de l’horlogerie au profil atypique, il dirigeait depuis un
an Ulysse Nardin dont il reste le capitaine.
Kering has reinforced Patrick Pruniaux’s role and
stature within the group by appointing him as CEO
of Girard-Perregaux this summer. A watch industry
professional with an atypical profile, he has been at
the helm of Ulysse Nardin for the past year and will
continue as such alongside his new responsibilities.
François-Paul Journe
François-Paul Journe a cédé une participation
minoritaire de sa marque à Chanel, qui permet ainsi
à Montres Journe SA et à sa manufacture en plein
cœur de Genève de voir l’avenir avec sérénité. Cette
entrée dans le capital des marques indépendantes
n’est pas une première pour Chanel qui avait opéré
ainsi avec Bell & Ross et Romain Gauthier.
François-Paul Journe has sold a minority stake in his
brand to Chanel, thus enabling Montres Journe SA
and its manufacturing facility in the heart of Geneva
to look to the future with confidence. This entry
into the capital of independent brands is not a first
for Chanel, which had done so with Bell&Ross and
Romain Gauthier.

Stéphane Bianchi est le nouveau CEO de la division
horlogère de LVMH (Hublot, TAG Heuer, Zenith)
prenant les rênes de TAG Heuer avec à ses côtés
Frédéric Arnault, directeur digital et de la stratégie.
Ancien d’Arthur Andersen, il était auparavant CEO
d’Yves Rocher et de Petit Bateau, tout en étant
administrateur du groupe suisse Maus.
Stéphane Bianchi has been appointed CEO of the
LVMH Watch Division (Hublot, TAG Heuer,
Zenith), taking the reins of TAG Heuer, where he
will be backed by Strategy and Digital Director
Frédéric Arnault. Bianchi has worked for Arthur
Andersen and more recently served as CEO of Yves
Rocher and Petit Bateau, as well as sitting on the
board of the Swiss group Maus.
Deremi Ajidahun
Deremi Ajidahun devient le partenaire de GMT pour
lancer en décembre 2018 GMT Africa par le biais d’une
franchise en Afrique subsaharienne. Bien connu de
l’horlogerie en tant que détaillant et distributeur
de nombreuses marques de luxe au Nigeria, le
fondateur de Hole 19 Luxury Group est actif depuis 20
ans dans la distribution, le luxe, le sport et l’édition.
Deremi Ajidahun is partnering GMT in launching
GMT Africa in December 2018, via a franchise for
sub-Saharan Africa. Well known in the watch
industry as both retailer and distributor of numerous
luxury brands in Nigeria, the founder of the Hole 19
Luxury Group has been active for 20 years in the field
of distribution, luxury, sport and publishing.

convoitée. Mais pour réussir cet exercice en apparence
banal, les embûches sont nombreuses.

The all-steel sports timepiece, exuding a resolutely active
aura of elegance, embodies watchmaking versatility. It
encompasses some of the most sought-after and enduring
models of all time. It is instantly recognizable by its gray
exterior, its three hands teamed with a date display, as well as
its air of being an obvious choice that comes from being found
on so many different wrists. It is designed to be entirely at home
on all occasions, apart from particularly extreme examples. It
thus meets the vast majority of needs, apart from those implied
by particularly formal evening events or super-intense sports
activities. Even more surprisingly, it transitions seamlessly from
men’s to women’s wrists, whether because of its moderate size

means it’s easy to see why each brand wants to have its own. 

Mais la tâche est herculéenne : créer une montre assez simple
pour se plier à toutes les circonstances, assez solide pour faire
face à de nombreuses épreuves et surtout assez finement desi-
gnée pour traverser les âges. La démarche est si exigeante que
seules quelques-unes sont élues. Ce sont souvent de véritables
icônes, produites depuis des décennies et modifiées par petites
touches au fil du temps. Chronologiquement et en termes de
volumes de vente, la première est certainement la Datejust de
Rolex. Née en 1945, elle incarne à elle seule tout un pan de la
culture horlogère. Portée par la politique de déclinaison de la
marque, elle est disponible en plusieurs tailles, des dizaines de
couleurs de cadran et variantes de lunette. Puis une seconde
vague est arrivée dans les années 1970. Elles sont plus luxueuses,
plus coûteuses et toutes deux de la main du designer star et
stakhanoviste d’alors, Gérald Genta. La Nautilus de Patek Phi-
lippe et la Royal Oak d’Audemars Piguet ont beaucoup en com-
mun mais sont assez différentes pour avoir chacune trouvé sa
place, son registre, ses collectionneurs. 

Nonetheless, the task of creating a watch simple enough to suit
every circumstance, robust enough to withstand all manner of
trials – and above all subtly designed to find its way through
the ages – is truly Herculean. The process is in fact so daunting
that only a few prove truly successful, often becoming true icons
produced for decades and only discreetly modified as time goes
by. The first among them – both chronologically and in terms of
sales volume – is doubtless the Datejust by Rolex. Launched in
1945, it single-handedly embodies a whole swathe of watchmak-
ing history. Sustainably driven by the brand’s policy of provid-
ing numerous variations, it has been interpreted through several
sizes, along with dozens of dial colors and bezel versions. The
second wave hit during the 1970s, with two models that were
more opulent and more expensive, both created by the brilliant
and perpetually busy designer of the era, Gérald Genta. The Nau-
tilus by Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak have a
great deal in common and are yet sufficiently different to have
each found its place, its own vein and its collectors. 

Vient alors une troisième catégorie, plus dense, plus hétérogène, de marques
qui veulent leur part du segment le plus porteur de l’horlogerie. Girard-Perre-
gaux a la Laureato, qui renaît avec une nouvelle dynamique et de nombreuses
déclinaisons. A l’autre extrémité du spectre des tarifs, Maurice Lacroix pousse
fort avec son Aikon Automatic, dont le rapport finitions/prix exceptionnel
représente un argument de poids. Vacheron Constantin vient de donner un
nouvel élan à son Overseas. Enfin, Bulgari réalise un début de haute volée avec
la dernière génération d’Octo, dont la pertinence doit encore s’affirmer sur la
longue durée.
DÉTAILS
Comme souvent, en horlogerie, les détails sont essentiels. Ainsi, l’obtention
d’un équilibre parfait entre portabilité, attractivité et durabilité repose sur
deux conditions méconnues. La première est une identité stable et visible, ce
qui suppose que la montre soit totalement différente des autres familles d’une
marque. Seconde condition, une montre tout acier doit posséder un bracelet
distinctif, qui fait partie de son identité. Dans la durée, un design anecdotique
ou trop ancré dans une époque pour traverser les âges entame la pertinence de
la pièce dans son ensemble. Rien d’étonnant à ce que ces montres si populaires
soient si peu nombreuses à le rester.
CHALLENGERS
Then comes a third category that is both more crowded and more heterogenous :
that of brands wanting their share of watchmaking’s most buoyant segment.
Girard-Perregaux has its Laureato, reborn with a fresh dynamic and numerous
variations. At the other end of the price spectrum, Maurice Lacroix is making a
strong push with its Aikon Automatic, featuring an exceptional price to finishing
quality ratio that constitutes a major asset. Vacheron Constantin has just given
a new lease on life to its Overseas. Finally, Bulgari is off to a flying start with
the last-gen Octo, whose relevance will need to be confirmed over the long term.
DETAILS
As is often the case in watchmaking, everything comes down to details.
Achieving a perfect balance between wearability, attractiveness and durability
depends on two little known prerequisites. The first is a stable and visible iden-
tity, which implies that the watch must be entirely different from a brand’s
other lines. The second is that an all-steel watch must have a distinctive brace-
let that is an integral part of its identity. Over the years, a fanciful design, or
one too firmly rooted in a given era to find its way through the ages, adversely
affects the relevance of the model as a whole. It is thus hardly surprising that
so few of these highly popular watches manage to retain that degree of wide-
spread favor.

avid’s article confirms that my preference for
all-steel watches puts me firmly in the main-
stream of horological tastes. My watch choices
are intended to suit any occasion and the fictional analogy
I always use is James Bond and his Omega Seamaster, not
least because this is the very watch I wear most frequently. If
the watch doesn’t look out of place whether it’s worn with a
tuxedo in the Casino Royale or during the end-of-days battle
at Skyfall, then my reckoning is that it won’t look too bad
on me either. It’s also the perfect definition of the “sporty-
chic” in this article’s title. A quick glance through the copious
archives at WorldTempus, however, shows that sporty chic
covers a vast swathe of horological territory.

Vous venez de reprendre la direction de Panerai et d’effectuer cet
été le tour du monde des filiales, quel est votre premier constat ?
Panerai est une marque restée forte dont nous pouvons conti-
nuer à écrire l’histoire. A l’intérieur du groupe Richemont depuis
1997, elle est bien organisée, peut compter sur ses filiales, plus de
80 boutiques et un réseau de détaillants parmi les meilleurs du
monde. En s’immergeant dans une nouvelle entreprise, on béné-
ficie du feedback de centaines de personnes, des détaillants et des
journalistes comme des Paneristi. Panerai a cette chance d’avoir
ce groupe de fans dans de très nombreux pays, qui se retrouvent
et parlent de la marque de façon extrêmement passionnée. Cette
communauté formule des commentaires, très riches, qu’il faut
analyser car on ne peut bien sûr pas tout faire. Avec la vision exté-
rieure que j’apporte, nous remarquons certains points qui méritent
d’être accélérés, d’autres sur lesquels il vaut mieux réduire la voi-
lure, cela fait partie de l’évolution normale d’une marque.
Cette communauté n’attend-elle pas de Panerai
plus d’innovation ?
Cela fait partie des points à amplifier. Panerai est une marque
d’innovation qui dispose déjà de son Laboratoire d’Idées, à qui
nous allons donner un nouvel élan. Son identité italienne doit
se traduire d’abord par de la créativité, et notamment de l’inno-
vation technique, calibres et matériaux. Le côté disruptif qui a
permis à Panerai d’exister dans cette industrie doit s’affirmer,
comme ce fut le cas avec la BMG-Tech, la Carbotech ou la Bronzo,
tous ces matériaux qui ont marqué les esprits quand Panerai les
a introduits. Je tiens à perpétuer cette légende, à l’image de la
Lab-ID lancée l’an passé.
Les modèles plus fins de la Luminor Due lancés récemment
rencontrent-ils le succès espéré ?
Oui. Leur succès est lié au fait que Panerai s’adresse avec ces pro-
duits à une nouvelle clientèle, qui génère un taux d’acquisition
élevé parmi les femmes, les jeunes ou les Asiatiques, qui ne consi-
déraient pas la marque auparavant. D’ailleurs, la Luminor Due va
devenir une ligne à part entière. Panerai proposait jusqu’à présent
deux lignes, Luminor et Radiomir, dorénavant scindées en deux
pour clarifier l’offre en quatre collections : Radiomir, Luminor,
Luminor Due et Submersible (auparavant dans la ligne Luminor).
Un accent particulier sera notamment mis sur la Submersible.
You have just taken the helm of Panerai and done a world tour
of its subsidiaries : could you share your first impressions ?
Panerai remains a strong brand with a story we can continue
writing. It has been part of the Richemont group since 1997 and is
well organized, able to rely on its subsidiaries, more than 80 bou-
tiques and one of the world’s finest retail networks. In immers-
ing myself in the company, I have been lucky enough to benefit
from the feedback of hundreds of people, retailers and journal-
ists as well as Paneristi. Panerai is fortunate to have this group
of enthusiasts in many countries, who meet and talk about the
brand in an extremely passionate way. This community pro-
vides a wealth of commentary that must be analyzed, because of
course we cannot do everything. The outside vision I bring helps
us pinpoint certain areas that deserve accelerated development,
whereas others should perhaps be given less importance : this is
all part of a brand’s normal evolution.
Doesn’t this community expect more innovation from Panerai ?
That’s one of the areas to be amplified. Panerai is an innovative
brand that already has its own Ideas Laboratory and we plan to
give it fresh impetus. Its Italian identity must be conveyed first
of all through creativity, and notably through technical innova-
tion in terms of both movements and materials. The disruptive
side of its nature that put Panerai on the map of this industry
must be reinforced, as it was with the BMG-Tech, Carbotech and
Bronzo materials that had a strong impact when they were intro-
duced last year. I wish to perpetuate this legend, as exemplified
in the Lab-ID launched last year.
Have the recently launched slimmer Luminor Due models
proved as successful as expected ?
Definitely. Their success stems from the fact that they are a
means for Panerai to address a new client base, generating a high
acquisition rate among women, young people and Asian custom-
ers who had not so far taken much notice of the brand. The Lumi-
nor Due will in fact become a line in its own right. Panerai had
previously offered only two lines – Luminor and Radiomir – that
have now been split in two so as to clarify the range now compris-
ing four collections : Radiomir, Luminor, Luminor Due and Sub-
mersible (previously part of the Luminor line). Special emphasis
will be placed on the Submersible.

Quelles seront vos priorités en 2019 ?
Le volet produit sera très important comme
vous l’aurez compris. Cependant, avec une
marque iconique comme Panerai, la marge de
manœuvre est étroite car il ne faut rien casser,
l’évolution doit respecter le passé et rester subtile
pour assurer la continuité. En parallèle, il convient
de recréer de la magie autour de nos deux destina-
tions emblématiques que sont Florence et Neuchâtel. Florence et
sa boutique au contexte architectural très particulier représente
l’histoire de Panerai, nous lui dédierons des séries spéciales. A
Neuchâtel, nous allons théâtraliser la manufacture en y créant
un lounge, de l’expérience avec une pièce crash-test pour que les
clients puissent vérifier la résistance de nos montres quand elles
tombent, mais aussi mieux exploiter le Laboratoire d’Idées avec
une pièce secrète, dresser notre hall of fame avec toutes les célé-
brités qui portent nos montres, ce que Panerai n’a jamais mis en
avant. Tout ce potentiel sous-exploité de Panerai sera valorisé.
L’ADN marin de Panerai est-il toujours porteur ?
Oui, l’axe marin reste prioritaire pour le produit, comme pour
notre ambassadeur nautique, le bateau classique Eilean. Le voi-
lier va continuer à régater sur les circuits classiques des Caraïbes
et de la Méditerranée tel que le Panerai Classic Yacht Chal-
lenge, tout en allant à la rencontre du public en stationnant par
exemple à Miami, Londres ou St. Barth.
Entre les voiliers classiques en bois et les bolides high-tech
de l’America’s Cup que vous sponsorisez aussi,
faut-il effectuer un choix ?
Non, car Eilean est à Florence ce qu’une course de l’America’s Cup
est à Neuchâtel. D’ailleurs nous annonçons bientôt de nouveaux
partenariats sur des courses spectaculaires. Ces régates offrent
des plateformes d’inspiration pour de nouvelles matières et expé-
riences. Panerai va puiser dans son histoire comme la boutique
de Florence, Eilean ou la Radiomir, tout en l’enrichissant par ce
qui doit véhiculer l’avenir de la marque et la créativité autour de
nos montres.

What are your priorities for 2019 ?
The product side of things is very important, as
you will have grasped. Nonetheless, with an iconic
brand such as Panerai, there is relatively little room
for maneuver since we mustn’t destroy anything and
the evolution must be respectful of the past while
remaining subtle so as to ensure continuity. In parallel,
it’s important to rekindle the magic of our two emblem-
atic destinations : Florence and Neuchâtel. With its bou-
tique featuring a distinctive architectural context, Florence
embodies the history of Panerai and we will introduce several
special series dedicated to this location. In Neuchâtel, we are
going to add a theatrical touch to the Manufacture by creating
a lounge area, as well as offering an authentic experience with
a crash-test model enabling clients to see for themselves how
robust our watches are when they fall. We also plan to make
more of our Ideas Laboratory with a secret room and create our
own Hall of Fame with all the celebrities who wear our watches –

Naturally, when a brand succeeds in having watches nomi-
nated in three, four or five different categories, its CEO’s chances
of being called to the platform to accept a prize are significantly
higher. Such is the case for Vacheron Constantin (in the Men’s,
Men’s Complication and Artistic Crafts categories) ; Ulysse Nar-
din (in the Chronometry, Mechanical Exception, “Petite Aiguille”
and Sports categories) ; and Bvlgari (in the Ladies’ Complication,
Men’s Complication, Ladies’, Mechanical Exception and Jew-
ellery categories !). All of these three brands had already won
awards last year. On the feminine side, Chaumet also stands out
with a selection in three categories (Ladies’ Complication, Ladies’
and Artistic Crafts). The potency of Bvlgari’s appeal is particu-
larly impressive, since the entire jury has selected it on mascu-
line as well as feminine territories, in both Fine Watchmaking
and Jewellery. This year, only one other brand – Bovet – has been
nominated at once in feminine (Ladies’ category) and mascu-
line (Mechanical Exceptional category) selections. Longines and
Seiko also have two pre-selected watches and are competing in
the same two categories (Challenge and “Petite Aiguille”), as
are TAG Heuer and Zenith (Chronometry and Sports). In paral-
lel, five other brands have convinced the experts to select two of
their watches : Chanel (Ladies’ and Jewellery), Girard-Perregaux
(Men’s Complication and Mechanical Exception), H. Moser & Cie
(Men’s Complication and Men’s), Piaget (Ladies’ and Jewellery)
and Van Cleef & Arpels (Ladies’ Complication and Jewellery). All
these brands have already been honored by the GPHG jury in pre-
vious editions, apart from Bovet whose exceptional creations are

Du pur Breguet
Breguet, c’est une culture de la mécanique compliquée, certes.
Avec un fondateur, inventeur et fournisseur de tant de pièces à
multiples indications, rien de plus normal. Mais Breguet, c’est
aussi une esthétique, qui ne se remarque jamais autant que
quand elle domine les débats. Dans le cas de la Classique 5157,
les indications se résument aux heures et aux minutes. Pas
même une seconde pour brouiller les cartes. C’est donc l’éven-
tail de codes de la marque qui s’exprime ici. Avant tout autre,
c’est l’élégance qui parle. Son vocabulaire est fait de dimensions,
le diamètre d’abord. Avec 38 mm, la 5157 est faite pour rester
discrète. L’épaisseur ensuite : 5,4 mm. La discrétion se confirme,
tapie sous une manche de chemise, au plus près de la peau. Cette
élégance s’exprime dans le registre classique, habillé, et ce mes-
sage-là passe par des finitions. Le cadran a été entièrement guil-
loché par une machine ancienne, actionnée et réglée à la main.
Le motif gravé dans la plaque d’or massif et argenté est un Clou
de Paris. Les aiguilles bleuies sont de type Breguet, autre nom
donné aux aiguilles pomme. La carrure de boîte est cannelée et
taillée dans l’or rose. Après l’or gris et l’or jaune, également dis-
ponibles sur cette référence, un ton chaud habille la plus fine et
la plus simple de toutes les Breguet.

de la Dandy
Un dandy ne fait pas comme les autres. Il s’habille différemment
et ce faisant, il manifeste l’unicité de sa pensée. Et qui plus est,
il renouvelle son vestiaire. La Dandy de Chaumet non plus, ne
fait pas les choses comme les autres. Elle aussi revient de chez le
tailleur. Depuis sa création il y a quinze ans, la plus élégante des
montres masculines de la maison arbore ses formes différentes
avec une fierté et une aisance qui en disent long sur sa person-
nalité. En effet, Dandy est une montre coussin aux dimensions
qui en font un carré aux côtés assouplis. D’autre part, elle arbore
des cornes fines munies de grandes vis visibles. Son cadran a été
imaginé pour sortir complètement du lot. En effet, la
Dandy a toujours arboré des rayures verticales, ornées
d’un motif en relief, dites Bayadère. Pour sa nou-
velle saison et sa nouvelle mise, Dandy a décalé ses
rayures plus près du centre et les a surplombées
d’un long trait métallique, proche des index

A dandy does things his own way. He dresses differently, and in
doing so, flaunts a unique mindset. He also regularly updates his
wardrobe. The Dandy by Chaumet also does things differently
and is fresh back from a trip to the tailor. Since its creation 15
years ago, the most elegant men’s watch from the Maison has
appeared in different shapes with a proud sense of natural ease
that speaks volumes about its personality. Dandy is a cushion-
shaped model in a size that make it a square with softened edges.
It also features wire-type lugs bearing large visible screws. Its
dial is designed to stand out from the crowd, since the Dandy has
indeed always featured vertical ‘Bayadère’ stripes adorned

On pourrait croire que l’Arceau s’offre chaque année une cure de jouvence, tant

A l’occasion de son 280e anniversaire, Jaquet Droz introduit une première dans
sa collection Grande Seconde dont les deux cadrans décentrés des heures et
minutes, et de la grande seconde représentent le chiffre 8. La nouveauté de
la Grande Seconde Skelet-One réside dans l’emploi du saphir intégré au sein
d’une composition squelette. Avec pour but de faire entrer la lumière au cœur
de la montre. Pour y parvenir, Jaquet Droz a complètement évidé la platine et
la masse oscillante en or, et éliminé le cercle d’emboîtage. Le recours au saphir
sur les cadrans décentrés permet de contempler en transparence le mouvement
squelette JD 2663 SQ construit en couches successives. Le disque de la grande
seconde est déconcertant. Totalement translucide, il ne porte que de discrètes
indications et une très fine aiguille qui n’empêchent pas le regard de plon-
ger dans les rouages du mouvement en-dessous. De part et d’autre des deux
cadrans, comme sur tous les modèles Grande Seconde, l’espace est libre mais
sur la Skelet-One les ponts effilés et noircis viennent tracer dans le vide une

souviendront que la Polaris Memovox fut lancée en 1968. Cette montre de plongée à fonc-
tion d’alarme « voix de la mémoire » sonnait pour avertir le plongeur que le temps d’im-
mersion était terminé. Cinquante ans plus tard, la Polaris refait surface avec une nou-
velle collection de plusieurs modèles à dominante sportive et élégante, pimentée d’une
touche de vintage. Le chronographe Polaris ne s’inscrit pas dans la lignée des montres
de plongée, mais dans celle des horloges et instruments développés par Jaeger pour les
cockpits de voitures, comme l’attestent l’échelle tachymétrique et les deux compteurs

sur l’ensemble du large spectre qu’elle couvre. Une
reconnaissance qui est due indiscutablement à son
iconique design. Mais en 2018 un bon dessin ne fait
pas tout et Bulgari a remarquablement accru sa cré-
dibilité horlogère au cours de ces dernières années au point de
fédérer quasi unanimement clients, collectionneurs et profes-
sionnels de l’horlogerie qui saluent régulièrement la crédibilité
et la respectabilité horlogère de la marque associée à l’élégance
italienne. Ses cinq montres sélectionnées au GPHG 2018 (un re-
cord !) l’attestent aussi. C’est donc avec curiosité que nous nous
sommes penchés, pour la première fois dans cette rubrique, sur
une Bulgari : L’Octo Finissimo Squelette.

he Octo collection is enjoying growing success
across the broad spectrum it encompasses. This
recognition is doubtless due to its iconic design,
but in 2018 aesthetics is not the be-all and end-all.
Bulgari has in fact remarkably enhanced its watch-
making credibility over recent years, to the point of achieving
almost unanimous acclaim among customers, collectors and
watch industry professionals alike, who regularly salute the
brand’s horological respectability coupled with Italian elegance.
Witness its five watches selected at the GPHG 2018 : a record ! We
were thus particularly curious to examine a Bulgari for the first
time in this column : the Octo Finissimo Skeleton.
L’HABILLAGE :
Cette interprétation moderne de la quadrature du cercle qu’est
le boîtier Octo semble extraire une essence de styles et d’époques
variés voire antagonistes et de les marier dans une étonnante
symbiose. Certains y verront de l’Art Déco d’autres du baroque.
Le style est fort et ne laisse en tout cas pas indifférent. Mais
ce qui surprend le plus c’est le rapport entre la taille des boî-
tiers de la collection et leur épaisseur très contenue. Un constat
d’autant plus marquant avec le squelette de ce test qui est…
extraplat. Celui-ci est en or rouge microbillé et mesure 40 mm
de côté pour 5.15 mm d’épaisseur seulement. L’emboîtage par la
lunette contribue à économiser quelques dixièmes de millimètre
d’épaisseur. L’intégration du bracelet malgré sa finesse et la pla-
quette de céramique sertie au centre de la couronne attestent du
soin porté au développement et à la construction de ce boîtier.
Le mouvement étant squeletté, il dévoile ses secrets en apparais-
sant naturellement entre deux glaces saphir rondes et plates.
Des aiguilles dauphines ajourées et un chemin de fer octogonal
constituent l’affichage lisible et sobre de ce nouveau modèle. 

EXTERIOR :
This modern interpretation of squaring the circle represented
by the Octo case appears to have taken the essence of varied or
even antagonistic styles and eras and combined then in an asto-
nishingly symbiotic manner. While some will see Art Deco and
others baroque influences, the aesthetic is undeniably strong
and impactful. Perhaps the most surprising aspect is the ratio
between the size of the cases in this collection and their extre-
mely compact nature. This is all the more striking in the skele-
ton model featured in this test with its ultra-thin case in bea-
dblasted red gold measuring 40mm along the side and a mere
5.15mm thick. Casing-up via the bezel contributes to saving seve-
ral tenths of a millimeter. The smooth integration of the strap
despite this slenderness, along with the ceramic plate set in the
crown center, testify to the care lavished on the development and
construction of the case. The skeletonized movement naturally
reveals its secrets between two round flat sapphire crystals. 

 LE MOUVEMENT :

petite seconde et un indicateur de réserve de marche sur sa moi-
tié gauche. Son unique barillet entretient les oscillations du
balancier à la fréquence de 28’800 A/h durant 65 heures. D’une
épaisseur de 2.23  mm seulement celui-ci a été très généreuse-
ment ajouré. Les techniciens de Bulgari ont fait preuve de beau-
coup d’intelligence dans cet exercice. La transparence est ainsi
dominante sans pour autant que le mouvement ne semble affai-
bli structurellement par cette « impudeur ». Les formes des ouver-
tures sont délicates bien qu’aucun angle sortant ou entrant n’y
apparaisse ce qui contribue au prix attractif de la montre sans
que l’esthétique n’en souffre. L’ajourage de ce calibre s’articule
autour de douze rayons qui s’inscrivent en véritables index dans
un équilibre parfait. Leur surface est satinée circulairement et
galvanisée en anthracite probablement par un rhodium noir.

MOVEMENT :
Caliber BVL 128SK – Finissimo is a mechanical hand-wound
movement driving central hours and minutes hands as well as
small seconds and a power-reserve display on the left-hand side
of the dial. Its single barrel maintains the balance-wheel oscilla-
tions at a frequency of 28,800 vph for 65 hours. Measuring just
2.23mm, this mechanism has been generously openworked, an
exercise undertaken by the Bulgari technicians with conside-
rable intelligence. Transparency rules, yet without structurally
weakening the movement by this “show-all” approach. The
daintily shaped openings reveal no trace of interior or exterior
angles, thus contributing to the attractive price of the watch
without being detrimental to its appearance. The openworking
of this caliber is built around 12 spokes serving as veritable
hour-markers and creating a perfect balance. Their surface is
circular satin-brushed and galvanized in an anthracite shade of
gray, probably by black rhodium-coating.
LES TESTS :
La qualité des résultats chronométriques mesurés laisse à penser
que ce calibre n’a rien cédé en précision comme en fiabilité par
sa cure d’amaigrissement. Ce mouvement, squeletté ou non,
est donc promis à un avenir prometteur et durable. Malgré
une couronne de petite taille son armage se fait rapidement
et aisément. Au porter, cette montre offre un confort tel
qu’on l’oublie.

TESTS :
The quality of the chronometric results measured gives a
clear idea that this caliber has been trimmed down without
compromising its precision and reliability. Whether skeleton-
ized or not, this movement is destined for a promising and las-
ting future. Winding is quick and smooth despite its small-size
crown. This watch is so comfortable on the wrist that you tend to
forget you’re wearing it.

qu’unique. C’est ainsi qu’au terme de ce banc d’essai on réalise
mieux l’enthousiasme légitime que portent amateurs et profes-
sionnels à Bulgari et à sa collection Octo en particulier.

exposées au Musée d’Art et d’Histoire de Genève pendant l’expo du

he first international watch photo competition open
to the public at large and enabling watch enthusi-
asts to have their photos published and exhibited
– the Watch Photo Awards (WPA) – is drawing to a
close. From May to October 2018, a new theme was
suggested (such as sport, pictured here, or black for the month
of October). Mechanical-watch owners sent their photos on this
theme to the WPA jury, which chose ten each time. The public
then voted for the best among them, and each month its author
won a weekend for two in a five-star Geneva hotel. After the six-
month-long competition, the 60 selected photos are displayed in
the Musée d’art et d’histoire de Genève during the GPHG exhibi-
tion from November 1st to 11th, as well as on watch-photo-awards.com

Entre Rolex et Patek Philippe, les échelles de production
et les moyens diffèrent radicalement. Mais les deux
firmes produisent des mouvements aux performances
chronométriques similaires, avec des moyens forcément
divergents.

a chronométrie est une qualité, mais elle se mesure par
une quantité. La précision d’une montre peut être résu-
mée par son écart de marche moyen. Pour être certi-
fiée chronomètre, son mouvement doit naviguer entre
4  secondes de retard et 6 secondes d’avance par jour,
ce qui se lit de la manière suivante -4 +6 s/j. Mais de nombreuses
marques ont décidé de faire mieux, systématiquement. Et la ma-
nière dont elles s’y prennent peut être radicalement différente.
Entre une approche industrielle et de grande quantité d’un côté et
une fabrication de moyenne envergure, avec de nombreux réglages
manuels de l’autre, il y a un monde. Cette divergence est parfai-
tement illustrée par deux leaders de l’industrie, respectivement
Rolex et Patek Philippe.

Whereas Rolex and Patek Philippe adopt vastly different
approaches to production in terms of both scale and
method, the two firms produce movements with similar
chronometric performance, achieved by necessarily
distinct means.
hronometry is a quality, but one that is measured
in quantity. A watch’s timekeeping precision can
be summed up by its mean deviation in rate. To
be chronometer-certified, its movement must fall
within a range of a four-second loss or a six-second
gain per day, expressed as -4 to +6 sec/day. However, a number
of brands have decided to do systematically better than that,
and they do so in extremely distinct ways. There is a world of
difference between an industrial large-scale approach on the one
hand ; and medium-scale production with numerous manual
adjustments on the other. This divergence is perfectly illustrated
by the two industry leaders : Rolex and Patek Philippe.

est proche et bien supérieure aux minima de la certification
chronomètre. Le programme Superlative Chronometer de Rolex
garantit que 100 % de sa production règle entre -2 et +2 s/j. Le
Poinçon Patek Philippe impose de livrer des montres naviguant
entre -3 et +2 s/j. Chez le premier, des solutions industrielles très
poussées sont développées en amont afin que la montre reste
simple et que les étapes finales, assemblage et réglage, soient les
plus efficaces possible. Chez le second, l’accent mis sur les fini-
tions et une certaine idée de la tradition horlogère nécessitent
des ajustements manuels.
TRAVAIL D’ORFÈVRE
Patek Philippe est la seule marque très haut de gamme à s’enga-
ger de manière systématique sur la chronométrie. Pour atteindre
ce résultat essentiel, Patek Philippe se base sur une fabrication
de composants de haute précision, mais l’exercice atteint vite ses
limites. En effet, une machine-outil en charge d’usiner des com-
posants déteste le changement. Pour qu’elle soit à son efficacité
maximale, il faut qu’elle tourne longtemps sur la même pièce,
permettant une stabilisation de son comportement sur la durée.
On en est à ce niveau d’exigence lorsqu’il s’agit de fabriquer des
ressorts d’un quart de millimètre de large. Or par définition,
Patek Philippe produit des dizaines de calibres différents, ce qui
génère des quantités unitaires faibles. Alors la marque compense
par un réglage manuel de qualité. Les mouvements sont ajustés
pour délivrer une précision de marche conforme aux standards
de la maison, et peu importe le temps que cela prend. 

TWO SCALES
The mechanical movement production ratio between the two
firms is about 20 to 1. Nonetheless, the degree of precision they
both guarantee is similar and far exceeds the minimal require-
ments of chronometer certifications. The Superlative Chronom-
eter program by Rolex guarantees that 100% of its production is
adjusted to between -2 and +2 sec/day. The Patek Philippe Seal
stipulates that its watches must range between -3 and +2 sec/day.
The former develops extremely sophisticated industrial solutions
upstream to ensure the watch remains simple and that the final
stages of assembly and adjustment are as efficient as possible.
Meanwhile, the latter focuses on finishing and a certain vision of
watchmaking tradition implying manual adjustments.
METICULOUS CRAFTSMANSHIP
Patek Philippe is the only extremely high-end brand that sys-
tematically commits to chronometry. To achieve this essential
result, Patek Philippe works with high-precision component
production, which nonetheless soon reveals its limitations. A
machine tool responsible for machining components loathes
change. To maintain it at maximal efficiency, it must operate on
the same part for as long as possible, so as to achieve sustainable
performance stability. This is a necessity when it comes to pro-
ducing springs measuring just a quarter of a millimeter wide.
However, by definition, Patek Philippe produces dozens of dif-
ferent calibers, resulting in small quantities of each type. The
brand therefore compensates by high-quality manual adjust-
ment of the movements designed to deliver a level of rating pre-
cision meeting the lofty in-house standards, no matter how long
it takes. 

De son côté, Rolex fabrique vingt fois plus de mouvements, ventilés dans
cinq fois moins de calibres différents. Cela signifie que chaque machine qui
fabrique un composant peut le faire sur des durées infiniment plus longues
qu’ailleurs, parfois sans jamais changer de tâche. De plus, Rolex régule la tem-
pérature des machines pour que les huiles, l’air, le métal dont sont faits les
robots soient stables en toute saison et toute heure. Si le gain est de quelques
microns, le bénéfice final est considérable. L’assemblage des calibres est exé-
cuté en quelques minutes et surtout, ils sont réglés avec une facilité déconcer-
tante grâce au système Microstella. Ainsi, les mouvements Rolex quittent les
ateliers de montage à -1 + 1 s/j ! La différence de soin manuel et de volumes
produits se reflète dans le prix de vente qui, pour une montre simple en acier,
va du simple au quadruple, mais pour une chronométrie similaire.
INDUSTRIAL VIRTUES
Meanwhile, Rolex produces 20 times more movements, a volume divided
among five times less different calibers. This means that each machine that
produces a component can do so for infinitely longer time spans than else-
where, without ever changing task. Moreover, Rolex regulates the temperature
so that the oils, the air, and the metal of which the robots are made remain
stable at all times and across the seasons. While the gain may be confined to
a few microns, this approach yields considerable final benefits. The calibers
are assembled in just a few minutes and, above all, they are adjusted with
disconcerting ease via the Microstella system. This means that Rolex move-
ments leave the assembly workshops with a -1 to +1 sec/day rate variation ! The
difference in terms of manual treatment and the volumes produced is reflected
in the sales price, which can be up to four times higher for a straightforward
steel watch, albeit with similar chronometric properties.

watchmakers over the centuries and is no less
diminished today. To the examples of industrial

évoquent plus de 175 ans de tradition sellière. Pique et
pique et colégram… Bienvenue dans les coulisses.

ousser la porte des ateliers de cuir d’Hermès revient
à faire l’expérience de tous ses sens. L’odorat tout
d’abord qui s’exalte soudainement au parfum des
peaux tannées. La vue éblouie par l’arc-en-ciel de cou-
leurs qui s’étire de l’orange au jaune en passant par
le brun classique, l’étoupe, le vert, le rouge H ou des déclinaisons
de bleus… Le sens du toucher est aussi invoqué. Toujours doux, les
cuirs se révèlent aussi dans la variété de leurs textures, du robuste
Barénia au grain de l’Epsom. Seul le goût est peut-être en reste.
Car l’ouïe, elle aussi, permet d’apprécier l’exquis ballet qui se joue
dans ces ateliers de Bienne où le geste de l’artisan et la machine
se lient d’amitié pour confectionner les plus beaux bracelets de
cuir. Les mains virevoltent, chaque geste se fait habile et précis
pour travailler les cuirs de chèvre, de veau, de buffle, d’autruche ou
d’alligator selon un rituel et des techniques bien spécifiques. 

years of saddle-stitching tradition. A stitch in time…

tepping into the Hermès leather workshops is a
multi-sensory experience. First smell, with the
heady scent of tanned hides. Sight is dazzled by
the rainbow array of colors stretching from orange
and yellow to classic brown, Etoupe, Hermès red
and various shades of blue… Touch is also brought into play,
with the ever soft leathers revealing a variety of textures, from
sturdy Barenia to the subtle grain of Epsom. Perhaps only taste
is left out, since hearing also enables visitors to appreciate the
exquisite ballet performed in these Bienne-based workshops
where the artisans’ touch meets machinery in crafting the fin-
est leather straps. Hands whirl and twirl in skilled and accurate
movements, deftly fashioning goatskin, calfskin, buffalo skin,
ostrich skin and alligator leather according to a dedicated ritual
and using highly specific techniques. 

Tout commence par la sélection rigoureuse des
cuirs. Ni rides, ni veines, ni griffures ne sont
admises dans l’atelier. Vient ensuite la découpe de
deux morceaux de cuirs de même largeur qui form-
eront les deux parties du bracelet. Ces dernières sont
aplaties pour devenir aussi minces, sur leurs bords,
qu’une feuille de papier. Une petite bande de tissu est
ensuite collée entre les parties supérieure et inférieure
du bracelet pour former un tout. La chorégraphie qui per-
mettra de transformer la matière brute en un bracelet aussi élé-
gant que résistant peut alors commencer. Tout d’abord, le traçage
et le griffage qui marquent le trait et les points de couture avec
un compas. Avec un fil de lin et deux aiguilles, l’artisan crée le
fameux « piqué sellier ». Chaque détail compte et la tranche du
bracelet fait aussi l’objet d’un soin particulier. Son arête doit être
abat-carrée et poncée au papier de verre. Vient ensuite l’étape qui
consiste à façonner les deux passants qui accueilleront la partie
languette du bracelet. Pour finir, chaque bracelet est authentifié
par une lettre et frappé du logo de la maison ou du poinçon de
l’artisan. Détail ultime, invisible pour le porteur de la montre :
le point de finition du bracelet forme un H. Le bracelet, pensé et
créé comme une seconde peau, devient alors un luxe absolu.

It all starts with the rigorous selection of
leathers. Wrinkles, veins and scratches are
personae non gratae in the workshop. Then
comes the cutting of two leather segments
of the same width that will compose the
two parts of the strap. They are flattened to
achieve paper-thin outer edges. A tiny strip of
fabric is then glued between the upper and lower
parts of the strap to form a whole. The choreography serving to
transform the raw material into an elegant and robust strap can
begin. First comes the process of tracing and marking with a
compass the sewing line and the stitching points. Using flaxen
thread and two needles, the artisan creates the famous “saddle
stitch”. Every detail counts and special attention is devoted to
the edge of the strap, which is softened by rubbing and sand-
papering. Then comes the stage consisting of shaping the two
loops through which the strap tab will be threaded. Each strap
is authenticated by a letter and stamped with the House logo
or maker’s mark. One final detail will remain invisible to the
wearer of the watch : the finishing stitch on the strap forms an
H. The strap, designed and created to hug the wrist like a second
skin, thus becomes an emblem of ultimate luxury.

n juillet 2016, l’Hôtel des Horlogers du Brassus, pro-
priété d’Audemars Piguet et unique quatre-étoiles
de la Vallée de Joux, fermait ses portes. Ouvert en
1984 et rénové une vingtaine d’années plus tard,
l’hôtel et ses 27 chambres ne pouvait être ni agran-

La première pierre du nouvel Hôtel des Horlogers a été posée
le 8 juin 2018 à l’emplacement de son prédécesseur, au centre du
Brassus, en bordure de la route empruntée par les horlogers et
les nombreux visiteurs de la Vallée, et juste à côté de la Manufac-
ture Audemars Piguet. « Le projet est loin d’être simple, mais il
est important, non seulement pour Audemars Piguet mais éga-
lement pour l’ensemble de la Vallée de Joux », a déclaré Jasmine
Audemars, Présidente du Conseil d’Administration d’Audemars
Piguet, lors de la cérémonie officielle. « L’hôtel permet d’attirer
une clientèle plus large à venir découvrir la beauté de la Vallée.
Il est essentiel pour nous de répondre aux besoins des voyageurs
internationaux ainsi qu’à ceux de nos voisins locaux. »
L’ancrage du nouveau complexe hôtelier dans l’environne-
ment géographique et culturel de la Vallée de Joux est fondamen-
tal pour l’horloger. Développé par BIG, le bureau de l’architecte

uly 2016 saw the closure of the Hôtel des Horlogers
in Le Brassus, owned by Audemars PIguet and the
only four-star hotel in the Vallée de Joux. Opened
in 1984 and renovated 20 or so years later, the hotel
and its 27 rooms could neither be extended nor
modernized, and its owner therefore decided to replace it with
a new project.
The first stone of the new Hôtel des Horlogers was laid on June
8th 2018 exactly where its predecessor once stood, in the center
of Le Brassus, alongside the road taken by watchmakers and the
many visitors to the Vallée, right next to the Manufacture Aude-
mars Piguet. “Though far from simple, this project is important,
not only for Audemars Piguet but for the entire Vallée de Joux”,
said Jasmine Audemars, Chairwoman of the Audemars PIguet
Board of Directors. “The hotel is a way to attract a broader public
to this stunningly beautiful part of the world. It is essential for
us to be able to cater to the needs of international travelers and to
those of our locals”.
Anchoring the new hotel complex within the geographical
and cultural environment of the Vallée de Joux was of fundamen-
tal importance for the watchmaker. Developed by BIG, the firm
headed by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels and renowned for bold
danois Bjarke Ingels, réputé pour l’audacité de son architecture,
le projet sera réalisé par le cabinet d’architectes vaudois CCHE.
BIG avait déjà imaginé la « Maison des Fondateurs » – le musée
Audemars Piguet – un bâtiment novateur semi-enterré tout
en spirale, remarquablement intégré dans la nature locale, et
actuellement en construction de l’autre côté de la Manufacture.
Le nouvel Hôtel des Horlogers porte la patte du cabinet danois,
avec son design futuriste en forme de « Z », agencé en quatre
corps de bâtiment, et sa toiture en pente formée de cinq rampes
que les clients pourront emprunter pour quitter leur chambre, à
pied en été et directement à ski en hiver.
Chauffé au bois, tout en verre et privilégiant les matériaux
authentiques comme la pierre et le bois de la région, ce monu-
ment d’architecture moderne d’une superficie de 6’300 m2,
comportera 50 chambres – dont 10 suites junior et 2 masters
suites – trois salles de séminaires et un espace bien-être. Une
brasserie mettant l’accent sur les produits du terroir, un second
restaurant et un bar Lounge seront à disposition des résidents
de l’hôtel mais aussi de tous les Combiers. Prévue pour 2020,
l’inauguration de l’hôtel devrait contribuer à porter le nombre
de nuitées dans la Vallée de Joux à plus de 25’000 par année.

firm based in the Canton of Vaud. BIG had already designed the
“Maison des Fondateurs”, the Audemars Piguet museum. This
innovative, partially sunken spiral-shaped building, blending
remarkably smoothly into the surrounding nature, is currently
under construction on the other side of the Manufacture. The new
Hôtel des Horlogers bears the style signature of the Danish firm,
with its futuristic Z-shaped design arranged into four buildings, as
well as a sloping roof that guests will be able to use in leaving their
room, on foot in summer or in winter-time “ski-in, ski-out” mode.
Wood-fired central heating, entirely glazed and featuring
authentic materials such as stone and wood from the region,
this 6,300 sqm monument to modern architecture will comprise
50 rooms -including 10 junior suites and 2 master suites – along
with three seminar rooms and a wellness & fitness facility. A
brasserie focusing on regional produce, a second restaurant and
a lounge bar will be available to hotel guests as well as local resi-
dents. The inauguration is scheduled for 2020 and this establish-
ment should raise the number of overnight stays in the Vallée de
Joux to more than 25,000 per year.

’est ainsi plus de deux cents pièces, triées sur le
volet, qui sont présentées lors de cette nouvelle
session que bien des amateurs d’horlogerie mo-
derne ne manqueraient pour rien au monde. Car
l’engouement croissant des collectionneurs pour
l’horlogerie dite « vintage » atteint désormais des sommets. Les
chiffres parlent d’ailleurs d’eux-mêmes : alors qu’une vente à
plus d’un million de francs suisses était encore, il y a peu, excep-
tionnelle, ce genre de record est désormais atteint à chaque fois !
Est-ce un effet de mode ou une tendance plus établie ? Difficile de
statuer. Ce qui est cependant notoire et des plus réjouissant, c’est
l’intérêt de plus en plus soutenu des jeunes générations pourtant
nées dans un monde désormais foncièrement numérique. 

siasm for so-called ‘vintage’ watches is thus
reaching new peaks. The figures indeed speak for themselves :

was exceptional until recently, this type of record is now regu-
larly reached. Is it just a fad or a more established trend ? Hard
to say, but what is remarkable and extremely encouraging is
the increasingly strong interest shown by younger generations,
despite being born into a now fundamentally digital world.

toujours, les stars incontournables des enchères horlogères :
Rolex, d’abord, avec ces deux Daytona 6263 et 6265, aux pous-
soirs vissés et cadran Paul Newman, estimées entre 300’000
et 500’000 francs. Patek Philippe, ensuite, avec des modèles
d’exception comme ce chronographe mono-poussoir au boîtier
officier et datant de 1924 dont seuls quinze exemplaires sont
aujourd’hui connus, ou cette extraordinaire Nautilus 3800.
Cette dernière, avec son cadran gris ardoise et sa carrure en
platine, combinaison encore jamais vue jusque-là, pourrait
très certainement être une pièce unique voire même un pro-
totype et fera, sans nul doute, sensation. Cependant, il serait
malvenu de ne parler que de ces célébrités. Car d’autres pièces
fantastiques pourraient également provoquer bien des émois.
Ainsi, Omega, dont la cote ne cesse de monter, sera de la partie
avec trois Broad Arrow originales de 1957, à savoir une Rail-
master, une Seamaster et même une Speedmaster estimée à
près de 150’000.–. Audemars Piguet sera également à l’honneur
avec la Royal Oak Offshore personnelle de son créateur, Emma-
nuel Gueit, et vendue avec quelques croquis originaux. Enfin,
notons encore l’incroyable et seule montre bracelet à répétition
minute d’Ulysse Nardin jamais découverte ! 

This fall session will as always feature recurrent watch auction
stars. First, Rolex, with two Daytona 6263 and 6265 models fea-
turing screw-lock pushers and a Paul Newman dial, estimated at
between 300,000 and 500,000 francs. Patek Philippe, of course,
with exceptional models such as a 1824 single pusher chronograph
with officer-type case of which only 15 are currently known ; as
well as an extraordinary Nautilus 3800. The latter, with its slate
gray dial and platinum caseband – an unprecedented combina-
tion – might well prove to be a one-of-a-kind model or even a
prototype and is bound to create a sensation. It would however be
inappropriate to focus exclusively on these celebrities, since other
fantastic timepieces are likely to cause a stir. Omega, whose sta-
ture is rising steadily in auctions, will be represented with three
original 1957 Broad Arrow watches : a Railmaster, a Seamaster
and even a Speedmaster estimated at around CHF150,000. Aude-
mars Piguet will also be in the spotlight with the personal Royal
Oak Offshore of its designer, Emmanuel Gueit, sold along with a
few original sketches. In addition, the incredible Ulysse Nardin
minute repeater wristwatch – the only one from the brand disco-
vered to date – deserves a special mention. 

moine horloger extraordinaire et leur place dans ces ventes
prestigieuses est tout aussi justifiée qu’indispensable.

well-deserved presence of models by great contemporary mas-
ter watchmakers such as Denis Flageollet (De Bethune), Vian-
ney Halter, François-Paul Journe, Kari Voutilainen and Daniel
Roth. This determination to turn the spotlight on those who will
doubtless be the stars of tomorrow’s auctions is remarkable in

since these brilliant independent figures are an integral part of
an extraordinary horological heritage and supporting them is

The partnership announced this September in London’s legendary Abbey
Road Studios has set the tone for the new dynamic driving the watch indus-
try’s oldest manufacturer. Performers such as the Beatles and Pink Floyd
cut their records at the Abbey Road Studios, which have more recently wel-
comed stars such as Lady Gaga and a number of soundtracks including for
the Lord of the Rings and James Bond Skyfall movies. Together with youthful
prodigy Benjamin Clementine, who gave a private concert at the event, the
studios have created a song called Eternity, inspired by Oscar Wilde and
specially composed for Vacheron Constantin. The singer-songwriter is one
of the faces of the brand’s new communications campaign with its “One of
not many” slogan.
DUBAI WATCH WEEK à Londres
