AFRO Mourns Loss of Former Leader, John H. Murphy III By Zenitha Prince
Washington Bureau Chief
John H. Murphy III is being remembered this week as
the steady hand that guided the Afro-American Newspapers
through the turbulent waters of civil rights history and a
perilous industry. The newspaper’s former president and CEO
died Oct. 16 at the Stella Maris Nursing Home in Timonium,
Md. He was 94 years old.
“He carried on the tradition of the AFRO, which was and is
a crusading newspaper, and did whatever he could to further the
cause of justice and equality,” said Moses Newson, who worked
as an AFRO reporter, city editor and then executive editor from
1957 to 1978. “He was a great guy to work for. You know how
it is with this business ... deadlines, people trying to sue the
paper ... but he was never one to jump up and down and get too
excited. He was always on an even keel.”
It was that steadiness and dedication to the advancement
of African Americans that made the AFRO a leading source of
information, advocacy and even succor throughout the riotous
years that was the apex of the civil rights movement.
“Mr. Murphy served the paper during a tumultuous time in
civil rights history,” said the AFRO’s current CEO /Publisher
John “Jake” Oliver. “From the assassination of Dr. King to the

took over as president in 1961
and became chief executive
officer in 1967. He was at
the helm as president and/or
chairman of the board for 25
years.
Despite his stature,
AFRO employees and family
members remember him as
a down-to-earth boss and
“people person,” who took an
interest in them and sought
their best interests. “He was
like a regular employee
there at the paper – although
everyone knew he was in
charge,” Newson said.

member of the AFRO’s
founding family that rejoined
the newspaper staff as director
of global markets in 2007,
said his “Uncle John” was
always “likable” and was a
dedicated newspaperman. “I
can remember when I came
back and rejoined the paper,

was from him saying he was
happy I came back,” Phillips
said. “He was dedicated to the

Waterfront Development Poised

As World-Class Attraction

the developer – except for construction purposes – has no other real interest in the community.
“The fact that we are establishing a memorial to Benjamin Banneker, in and of itself should
be a story,” said Peggy Seats, founder and CEO of the Washington Interdependence Council,
“because Blacks are the only ethnicity in the city without a monumental presence within the core
of the nation’s capital.
“But the developer isn’t interested in that,” she continued. “They have given nothing back to
the community, nothing back to our effort as a nonprofit collaborative effort of the waterfront.”
Seats said WIC is serving as a consultant to the District-based PN Hoffman real estate
conglomerate, which has assumed the lead for the master development plan that encompasses 26
acres along the Washington Channel.
Elinor Bacon, president of ER Bacon Development, a PN Hoffman partner, refuted those
claims. “We have 30 percent affordable housing requirements. We have a requirement to provide
35 percent of all goods and services to [minority] businesses and we are [mandated] to give 51
percent of all new hires to D.C. residents,” Bacon said. In addition, “We’re working very closely
with the wards 5, 6, 7 and 8 business councils as well as the Workforce Development Council
to ensure that people in the District know about the opportunities [surrounding the development]
and are in a position to take advantage of them.”
Meanwhile, a community forum attended by several hundred people, was recently held at
Arena Stage where the development was described as a mixed-use project.
PN Hoffman will team up with Madison Marquette Waterfront overseeing work that will
also include construction of 800 residential units, up to 300,000 feet of retail space, offices and
open green space. The development plan will be submitted this month and the first phase of
construction is slated to begin in 2012.
Hoffman, who plans to make the waterfront a world-class attraction, said his firm has worked
closely with the city to bring together the project, which will also include several affordable
housing units.
“Our collective concern for the success of this project is very real and we are pleased that
all sides have come together. We can now focus on the matter at hand – moving this vision
forward,” he said.
At-large Councilman Kwame Brown, who early on took the lead moving the vision forward,
was not immediately available for comment. But he said earlier that the project equates to a
major win for the District. “My priorities [have been to] work cooperatively to move the project
forward but to also preserve the community’s vision for the waterfront,” Brown said. “That
included protecting affordable housing and providing responsible oversight of the project.”
Although the project has stalled in the past, the District government has committed to
contributing nearly $200 million through a tax increment financing program.
According to the city’s planning and economic development department, 2,800 permanent
jobs will be created in addition to the 3,000 construction jobs for the city.
In terms of the Banneker memorial, U.S. Sen. Roland Burris, D-Ill., recently introduced
legislation that would reauthorize the monument but also amends the original legislation by
stipulating that both the statue and the Benjamin Banneker Institute of Math & Science are to be
erected inside of Banneker Overlook Park.

Alexander won, it was 128 days that a vacancy
would have had to [stand],” Thomas said. “So
that it would be a quicker time to get a special
election, we reduced the time …so citizens
could vote somebody in office —which I think
is conforming to the rest of the law.”
Thomas added that a special election
merely ensures that residents have consistent
rules in place to cast their votes.

More Affordable Housing

the affordable housing supply in the nation’s
capital, and we are delighted to join other
public and private entities in this powerful
partnership.”
Ward 8 Councilman Marion Barry was
not immediately available for comment.
But according to one of the District’s latest
analyses on affordable housing in the
Anacostia district, the area already benefits
from several strengths, including a diverse
housing mix coupled with a vibrant historic
business district along Martin Luther King
Avenue. At the same time, the district – where
one out of three housing choice voucher
holders in the District lives – is in need of
some 9,000 additional such units.
Recent mayoral contender, Leo Alexander, FRI SAT

Demanding Jobs Doesn’t Prepare
People to Make Them
A few weeks ago, tens
of thousands gathered at the
Lincoln Memorial for the One
Nation March on Washington.
The purpose of this
rally:  jobs and equal access
to fundamental human rights
for all Americans.  Those who
attended were eager to know
whether attendance trumped
that of Glenn Beck’s (I asked
too), and more importantly,
anticipated action that would
come as a result of their own.   into the economy, real economic transformation

when the nation continues to
dig its way out of the economic recession, when nearly one
in every 10 Americans is unemployed and when productivity
and payroll employment - indicators of private sector health
- remain down. Furthermore, in a time of a pivoting political
landscape in the District of Columbia, the situation, though
improving, continues to remain bleak.  Unemployment and
most notably, poverty rates, trump national averages by, in
some instances, nearly 4 percent.
These figures are but symptoms of a larger national and
local issue: quality education for growing youth, college-age,
unemployed and under-skilled populations.  The United States
education system ranks, not first, but 18th when compared to

sensitize government officials and others to the problems of the
black community and to have the courage of our convictions in
addressing those issues.
Anyone working in law enforcement today knows that
cigarette smuggling is a significant problem. Contraband
tobacco markets run deep and wide – operating not only in
the United States, but also around the world. What few people
know, however, is that the U.S. government is considering a
regulatory action that could cause this market to explode.
Today, the U.S. government is considering whether to ban
menthol cigarettes, which constitute nearly one-third of the
U.S. market. Any action to ban nearly one-third of the U.S.
market of a product that is currently legal is something of
concern to everyone in law enforcement.
A contraband market of illicit and unregulated cigarettes
will be inevitable – and large – if the government bans menthol
cigarettes. Illegal menthol cigarettes will find their way to
consumers.
What are the real-world ramifications of such a market? A
look at the recent history of illicit trade in cigarettes reveals
a troubling picture. In Canada, studies have shown that the
size of the contraband market there – caused by substantial
tax increases – is so substantial that it represents half of all
cigarette smoking in some provinces. It’s an amazing statistic.

Political Parties…It’s Not Who They Are; It’s Who We Wish
They Were
I recently had a very emotional conversation with a friend
who had a job with no benefits, health,  pension, etc. and was
looking for a new job. She and her family are Democrats and
she was horrified at the thought of dealing with Republicans.
Are jobs Democratic or Republican?  How did we get to
this point, where our allegiance to a political party is more
important than a decent job?
Want to start a firestorm in a roomful of Blacks? Tell them
that Martin King Sr. was a lifelong registered Republican as
was his son the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (according to
his niece Dr. Alveda C. King). As a matter of fact, that great
statesman Frederick Douglass was a Republican too. Were
they traitors? No. In those times almost all Black Americans
were Republicans. They became Republicans in appreciation
for what the party had done in freeing the slaves, etc. Blacks
mostly voted Republican from after the Civil War and through
the early part of the 20th century. In fact 32 percent of Blacks
voted for Nixon in 1960.
Democrats stood in the school house doors, started the
KKK, and passed the discriminatory Black Codes and Jim
Crow laws. It was Republican President Dwight Eisenhower
who pushed to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and sent troops
to Arkansas to desegregate schools. Surprised? Well, so was I.
How do we go from being Republicans to voting Democrats
in such large numbers? In 1960, Dr. King was arrested for
trespassing during a sit-in and held in Georgia’s Reidsville
prison. Fearing for his son’s life, Martin Luther King Sr.
appealed to Richard Nixon and presidential candidate John F.
Kennedy to secure his release. Nixon did not respond. Kennedy
immediately ordered the release. When King was freed, his
father vowed to deliver 10 million votes to the Democrats. The

But, if people are not prepared to both assume
existing, and more importantly, create future
positions, how does that leave us better off?
Increasing entrepreneurship education at the high
school, university and adult continuing education
level seems a small notion in the face of such
economic and educational hardships. But, organized
and implemented effectively, it could have an
enormous impact on the economic vitality of the
District of Columbia.     
Here’s why.  
While the U.S. government has infused capital
cannot occur until these funds reach millions of
small businesses and entrepreneurs who in turn have
the ability to employ millions of workers.  For the District this
could translate into thousands of new jobs to support just a
few of the more than 45,000 small businesses that reside here.
However, just as funds need to be available, entrepreneurs
need to be ready.  For this reason, it is critical that we inspire
early, teach often and reach historically disenfranchised
communities. District competitiveness rests on the collective

to a surge of black market sales there from low-tax states.

are running larger scale and more sophisticated diversion
schemes. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and
Explosives describes the diversion of tobacco as “a global
problem and believes illegal cigarettes are the number one
black market commodity in the world.”
We all know that cigarette smoking is dangerous and leads
to disease. The question is whether a ban on menthol will
undermine public health goals while also exerting a damaging
real-world impact on law enforcement.
If menthol cigarettes are banned, contraband versions
would effortlessly enter a sophisticated black market system
that already exists. Like in Canada now, contraband cigarettes
would be easily available on street corners or from car trunks.
The ramifications of a “black market” economy are obvious.
First, a black market does not ask young smokers for
their ID. Nobody wants underage youths to smoke. But
that attitude does not extend to those who sell smuggled
cigarettes. Counterfeit and smuggled cigarettes would be
sold on the streets and in neighborhoods, not at retail outlets
where minimum purchase age laws are enforceable. And
if unregulated sales to minors spike through street sales in
African-American communities, it would create a problem for
law enforcement – potentially even leading to prosecutions, and
to what end?

Later when John F. Kennedy signed the Civil Rights Act in
1964, Blacks in gratitude became Democrats. Thus began four
decades of Black people voting Democratic. Remember the
photo of MLK and JFK which seemed to be in every Black
home?
While there has been a historic, integral link between
the Republican Party and Blacks—Republicans started the
NAACP and launched Black colleges—they can take their
slam on the treatment of Blacks. They launched the Southern
Strategy which focused on the White male vote in the South;
went from Nixon’s Southern Strategy to Reagan’s “states
right” support ( code for anti-Black law…remember the racist
Willie Horton 1988 ads?) And the tea parties and anti Obama
e-mails, jokes, signs, billboards and worse comments generally
go unchallenged by the Republicans. Yes, the Republicans
have less than clean hands. Recently Gov. Haley Barbour,
head of the Republican Governors Association, arguing on
Virginia Gov. McDonnell’s omission of slavery from the 2010
proclamation for Confederate History Month, said the whole
thing “doesn’t matter for diddly,” a statement offensive to a lot
of people. Even the Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele
accuses his party of racism.
Our urban neighborhoods are scarred with boarded up
buildings, crumbling homes, missing supermarkets, patched
schools and a paucity of jobs. The life span of Blacks
trails Whites by 5.3 years. That the Black unemployment
rate is 700 percent higher than Whites staggers the mind and
the school dropout rate at 43 percent is reflected in the high
urban crime rate. Yet $7 billion has been spent on the “War on
Poverty”…where did that money go? Into the pockets of people
who got on the expressway to the suburban exits, that’s where,
but that’s a story for another day.

entrepreneurship education encourages the fundamental
activity of learning. It can improve critical thinking and
reasoning and gives purpose to subjects such a reading and
math - requirements for developing a sound business plan and
concept – areas where we are lagging.
Without placing a focus on entrepreneurship, it is difficult
to see how the changing dynamics of the regional economy
will be able to provide the level of economic activity needed
policymakers, educators, and community leaders join to
increase the number of local entrepreneurs, we would all be
doing each other, District residents and our country a favor.

There are other consequences. A black market will not pay
taxes. It is a matter of concern to everyone in law enforcement
if the federal government on one hand requires additional
enforcement resources by creating a black market, but then
takes away revenues with the other hand. And this will be
especially true if a contraband market, as history has shown,
creates flourishing criminal enterprises.
As a national police organization, the National Organization
of Black Law Enforcement Executives is concerned that
illegal activity associated with banning menthol cigarettes
could burden our law enforcement systems and divert needed
resources from more pressing problems. Enforcement activities
also could lead to severe inequities in law enforcement in
African-American communities.
In Washington, a scientific advisory committee of the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration is considering the menthol
issue. Its role is to issue a recommendation early next year
about whether to regulate or ban menthol cigarettes.
It is a great concern that there is no apparent effort
being made by the Food and Drug Administration to assess
the practical impact of creating a contraband market by
banning menthol cigarettes and what that means to the black
community. The unintended consequences of a ban on menthol
deserve serious consideration.

for me lately?”

personally opposed terrorism, he thought the terrorists had a
right to do what they did. What kind of support do you think
this candidate would have? Would voters say, ‘I disagree with
you about the terrorists, but what is your economic policy?’
Certain positions of candidates are so clearly contrary to the
good of the nation that the candidate’s other positions, although
good, do not matter.
“Support for abortion disqualifies a candidate,” said Father
Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life.
So before you consider voting for one who supports
abortion, please do realize that you are conveying that you
would also vote for a terrorist if he or she were right on other
issues.

AAA to Host Winter Car Checkup Later this Month

Temperatures are about to break, but your car doesn’t
have to. AAA is making sure motorists stay up to speed
and in gear this winter as it hosts its annual 40-Point Car
Care Check-up later this month in Upper Marlboro, Md.
Representatives from the auto club will be testing fluid levels,
tires, batteries, radiators and more at the Wawa gas station at
163 Crain Highway from 8 to 10 a.m. on Oct. 28. Motorists
are encouraged to have their car checked out for free in
preparation of the winter months.
Cold temperatures have been historically known to cause
damaging effects on engines, batteries and tires if not properly
maintained and can even lead to fatalities in more serious
cases. According to carinsurance.com, nearly 70 percent of
deaths in winter months are due to motor vehicle accidents
in the ice and snow. The Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA) also states that the leading cause of death
during winter storms is transportation accidents, making
winter preparation for an automobile both a life and money-
saving investment.

AAA will be advising motorists how to care for their cars
before winter strikes when it hosts its 40-Point Car Care
Check-up on Oct. 28.
“Now is the best time to get your vehicle in top operating
condition before the bitter weather that’s sure to come to our
area,” said Jeffrey Boone, an ASE master technician with
AAA Mid-Atlantic Automotive Services, in a press release.
“Delaying or failing to perform preventative maintenance early
on can lead some vehicles to the point of no return.”
AAA classifies the five areas critical to winter car
operation as brakes, fluids, traction, vision and alignment and
suspension. Each area poses as possible hazards to motorists
and opposing drivers. October and November are considered
the best months for drivers to have their vehicles prepped and
following their Oct. 28 check-up, AAA’s automotive experts
will be offering drivers advice and diagnostic reports detailing
any issues identified during the analysis. Helpful hints and
other small facts will also be provided such as maybe the
simplest one of them all: battery perseverance.
“What people don’t realize is that cold weather can really
kill a battery,” AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesman Lon Anderson
says. “It can also be damaging to other parts on your car and
can cause thousands of dollars worth of damages. The biggest
thing that we see at AAA is that cold kills weak batteries. It’s
important for motorists to not only have their batteries checked
but have their cooling fluids checked and have their car gone
over before we hit the dead winter because winter can really
cause cars to fail.”

Howard spirit. The Showtime
Marching Band started the
show off with an upbeat,
high-energy set of songs like
“No Hands’” and “Hard in the
Paint.”
The Homecoming
chairman and vice-
chairwoman Brian Cox and
Dionne Vaughn, respectively,
continued with a brief
introduction to homecoming
and its history that led to
a video with cameos from
artists like Bobby Valentino,
Marques Houston, and J.
Cole. The singers wished

All of us have somebody in our family and within our realm of
influence who have really been beaten up by addiction. These
are two young men who have [had a] meteoric rise in R&B and
soul music and then had a tremendous tumble because they
couldn’t get a hold of their addiction. So my sister and I come
together in the show for a full season, putting them on the road
to recovery because they’re gifted, they’re just misguided. And
what the viewer is going to see is that you can come back no
matter how far you have fallen.
AFRO: Why did you decide to get involved with this
project?
JB: I decided to get involved with “K-Ci and Jo-Jo Come
Clean” because I see it [addiction] everyday in the church that
I pastor and the community that I live. So many young brilliant
African-American people who are really devoured by their
addiction whether it is drugs…alcohol or whatever desire they
haven’t been able to control. I felt this would be a wonderful
way to really present that package to the world. Just because
you’re not living under a bridge or a homeless shelter doesn’t
mean you’re not dealing with an addiction.
AFRO: What are some of the challenges do you expect?
JB: The first one would be denial. People who really don’t
think it’s that much of a problem. The second is going through
the process. A lot of times the church is culpable because
people will go through something. We bring them to the altar
and lay hands on them. We think that’s the end of it when
there’s really a process to deliverance.
AFRO: What can audiences expect from this show?
JB: For every viewer that has any fraction of a heart or a
conscience, it’s going to make them laugh…cry…rejoice. And
at the end of the day it’s going to make them think. It’s going
to be a full rollercoaster ride of emotions. But when you get off
the ride…you will be sober about what it is you need to do with
your life.

Filmmaker Shares Father’s Inspiring Story with World

Even as a child, music was a critical part of Matthew
Kennedy’s life. At 4 he played his first
piano piece and starred in his own
radio program by 12 in Macon, Ga. His
exceptional musical gifts brought Kennedy
from the deeply segregated South to New
York City, where he studied at the Julliard
School and performed at the Apollo
Theater and Carnegie Hall. But his ultimate
music home was at Tennessee’s Fisk
University, where he became director of
the internationally acclaimed Fisk Jubilee
Singers.
Matthew Kennedy: One Man’s
Journey, is a documentary produced by
the musician’s daughter, Nina Kennedy,
that follows the life and death of a largely
unheard of musical prodigy. After suffering
racial discrimination, his father’s death and poverty, fate landed
Matthew Kennedy at a Rachmaninoff concert that ultimately
changed his life.
“I wanted to do this film for two reasons: First, because my
father has been practicing the piano for [80] years preparing
for his day in the sun, but it seemed he has been waiting for
someone else to ‘come down from On High’ and hand him the
recognition he felt he deserved. So after I had some success
in the film world, I decided this was something I could do
for him,” said Kennedy, also the director, in a statement.
“Secondly, American culture seems to tell young black boys

that they can only hope to become ball-players,
comedians, or gangsta’ rappers. I wanted to show
them the life of a black American concert pianist
– an image most of them haven’t seen – because
I know the effect that a role model can have. Just
look at the effect that Rachmaninoff had on my father’s life.”
The Augusta, Ga.-born musician mastered Rachmaninoff’s
signature piano style, which helped him land a coveted spot at
Julliard School of Music. But as Kennedy prepares to launch
an international career, a Juilliard professor urges him to return
to the South and inspire people of his own race. That return
brought Kennedy to Fisk University, a historically Black school
founded at the end of the Civil War to educate freed slaves.
When the Klan repeatedly burned down the wooden houses
– originally Union Army barracks – where classes took place, a
stone structure was erected that was intended to be Klan-proof.
The money for the construction of this building was raised from
the proceeds of concerts – old slave songs or “spirituals” as
they came to be known - given by a small choir of students that
became internationally known as the Fisk Jubilee Singers and
went on to perform for Queen Victoria of England.
“When he first came to Fisk University and started
performing the spirituals with the Jubilee Singers, I doubt that
he was aware at the time of the impact the spirituals would
have on his life. I know some people have difficulty with
the spirituals because the messages are … well, a bit heavy,”
said Kennedy. “But one must remember that the people who
originally sang these songs were people who had no human
rights whatsoever, who were bought and sold like chattel, who
were exploited to the point of collapse. These people had no
choice but to believe in a God who would deliver them one day,
and who would reward them in Heaven for their lives of toil
and servitude.”
As fate would have it, the Fisk Jubilee Singers needed a
pianist when Kennedy arrived in Nashville. Armed with his
Juilliard training, Matthew added his classical repertoire to the
programs of the singers. The group traveled and performed all
over the world, before adoring fans, diplomats, and royalty. They
were welcomed and embraced in the hallowed concert halls of
Europe, the Middle East, the Caribbean and South America.
In the middle of the realization of his dream of international
success, the nation is suddenly at war, and Matthew is called to
serve his country in a segregated U.S. Army.
The documentary continues with coverage of Kennedy’s
draft, return to music and life legacy, all which culminate
to create what the musician’s daughter calls “an amazing
American story.”

Georgetown Basketball Gears Up for New Season

With the early departure
of All-American center Greg
Monroe to the NBA, many
questions surround this year’s
edition of the Georgetown
Hoyas men’s basketball
team. But with two of the
best guards in the Big East
in seniors Chris Wright and
Austin Freeman, the Hoyas
still figure to be in the mix for
the conference championship.
“Coach [John Thompson
III] already said it himself:
The guards are going to have
to set the tone this year,” said
Freeman. “We’re just going
to have to let everybody feed
off of us because we have the
most experience out of the
group.”
Also in that stable
of guards is the often
overlooked junior Jason
Clark. The slender, long-
armed Clark is one of the best
three-point shooters on the
team and is depended upon to
be its best on ball defender.
Clark relishes the opportunity
to step into an expanded role
offensively.
“I’ve still got to do the
same things I was doing
before,” Clark said. “That’s
playing defense, making
plays, letting things happen
and definitely knocking down
my open shots.”
Georgetown will look
to a stable of big men to try
to replace Monroe. Much is
expected from senior Julian
Vaughn, who will step into
the center position that
Monroe vacated. He’ll have
some help from junior Henry
Sims, a Baltimore native,
and freshman forwards Nate
Lubick and Moses Ayegba.
“We’re not really trying
to replace Greg. We’re just
going to do what we have to
do to win,” said Sims.
“Nobody is expected to go
out and get 15 [points] and 10
[rebounds]. We’re expected
to go and play. If somebody
goes out and gets 15 and 10,

season schedule that includes
games against four NCAA
tournament teams from last
season, that night may have
been the last bit of fun the
Hoyas will have for a while.

Losing Slump

Football is a Nightmare It didn’t take long for

I’ve decided to task the NCAA and the
selective punishment they seem to enforce
on selected schools of choice. If you
notice, there are schools that have escaped
investigation and punishment forever. For
instance, I don’t remember Notre Dame ever
making the headlines because of NCAA
violations.
Notre Dame has the golden dome, the
golden helmets and they are the golden
boys. Notre Dame is the Dallas Cowboys of
the college ranks. If you have a few minutes,
think about this and I bet you can come up
with a laundry list of schools that have never
been punished for infractions.
You would have to be a dunce to believe
that there are only about half of the schools
under NCAA guidance that have done a
little under the table something to help the
program be successful.
I am sure we all know a stud athlete from
the neighborhood who suddenly seems to
dress better and suddenly has no need for
bus tokens once he reaches college. Since
scholarship athletes are not able to hold jobs
under NCAA rules, and there is no paycheck
for a jock that is majoring in advanced
basket weaving, I am thinking he might find
a little cash under his pillow from time to
time.
I don’t begrudge the guys making a
little cash on the side. My problem is with
the NCAA governing body. If there are
infractions at SMU, you don’t hear about it.
The NCAA ain’t going down to the Bible
Belt messing around. However if there is
something a little fishy going on at Miami
University, a sanctions committee shows up
and spends a couple of years investigating
and visiting South Beach and having a
cracked crab dinner on the expense account.
Take the case of Reggie Bush,
for example. A committee has been
investigating his tenure at USC for five
years. Reggie has been a professional for
this, his sixth season, and the committee
has spent enough time in sunny California
so they have reached a verdict. The verdict
stinks, but the NCAA is god in the college
ranks.
I have heard the pros and cons of the
BCS rankings, and from where I sit, there
are a lot more cons than pros. A recent
argument concerned the plight of Alabama.
Alabama was undefeated and ranked
No. 1 in power ranking. Steve Spurrier
led South Carolina onto the gridiron and
conducted an old fashioned butt whipping
on Alabama. This past weekend, Ohio State
had the No. 1 spot wrestled from their grasp.
Now there is speculation that maybe it
won’t be so bad if a team with one loss can
compete for the National Championship.
However, there will be undefeated teams in
other conferences who won’t get a shot at
the title.

schedule argument, because I believe if you
whip everybody who shows up you are a
champion in your own right and deserve a

While the BCS tries to figure out that
one, the NCAA has a problem that needs
solving. There is a lot of investigating of
athlete’s behavior, but some of the sins of
selective schools seem to go unnoticed.
Recently San Diego State was the victim
of crime. The only thing missing here was
a gun. A BYU running back was stuffed,
and the ball popped out. The ruling on the
field was no fumble. When the replay came
down, the ruling was upheld.
Later it was revealed that the replay
officials in the booth were a BYU employee
and alumnus. Boy, you talk about a home
field advantage.
These are the things that deserve the
attention of the NCAA, but when the NCAA
exercises its brinkmanship, it’s just another
nightmare.

they fell short in pulling off the come-from-
behind win, it was still an impressive night,
offensively, for Howard.
Tosin Elebute led Howard with a game-
high 13 kills, along with 14 digs. Her
teammates Keri Partridge, Gazelle d’Artois
and Taylor Johnson each recorded nine
digs, while Jasmine King finished with 35
assists in the game. They performed just as
well defensively, recording 16 total blocks,

sets like the second two. This just leads us

Bison Basketball Coach Ready to Spark Turnaround

Kevin Nickelberry is
staring at an uphill battle. The
new Howard Bison basketball
coach knows what’s at stake:
his integrity, his program and
its fans. Trying to match a
perennial loser to a perennial
powerhouse is no joke and it’s
a situation that Nickelberry
isn’t laughing at. The Bison
haven’t had a double-digit
winning season in eight years
and the new coach knows
that. He also knows about the
expectations, the academic
problems and the losing. But
many believe he may also
know how to fix everything.
Nickelberry took over the
Bison program earlier this
year on May 4. On Oct. 14,
the coach took some time to
answer a few of the AFRO’s
Weekly HBCU Football Power Rankings
questions.
AFRO: Coach, the
Washington, D.C., area is
overflowing with talent and
Howard is arguably at the
heart of it all. But it’s been
difficult for the school to
recruit despite a prominent
name and prestige. Why?
Nickelberry: I wish I
knew the answer. It didn’t
seem that hard when I was
here as an assistant 18 years
ago. But since I’ve been here
in May we’ve gotten two
BCS-talent big guys to come
here. We’ve been able to get
kids to commit or sign so I
really don’t know why it’s
been a problem. D.C. has
really been a big part of my
success. Howard is a national
name. My guys are going to
really hit the ground running
and we’re going to go out
and recruit some of the better

talent locally and nationally to
come [here].
AFRO: You’ve been here
since May. What’s been your
biggest challenge so far in
trying to conduct your job
and some of the issues you’ve
faced?
Nickelberry: Probably
mindset and having everyone
believe. I have somewhat
of a track history of taking
programs that haven’t been
winning and having some
success. But changing the
mindset of some of the
Howard fans and the local
people from believing that
it’s business as usual and that
we’re not going to get it done
at Howard. We will get it
done and hopefully those guys
will jump on the bandwagon
and we can change the
mindset of the players. I know
we can be a factor in the D.C.
area. Winning’s going to be
the answer [but] it’s going to
take some time to transplant
that winning mentality into
the Howard Bison nation.
AFRO: You talk about
changing the mindset and
the fans but that’s going to
be hard for a lot of people.
How frustrating has it been
for everyone in general over
these last few years and what
can they look forward to?
When you think about it,
Howard has 17,000 alumni
in Prince George’s County
alone. We have more alumni
in one county than most of
the local schools have in
all of the D.C. area. [But]
the fans have a right to be
frustrated; we haven’t won.
That’s the bottom line. I call
a spade a spade; we have not
gotten it done in basketball
and we need to change it. My
job is to change it and my
job is not to make excuses.
We will get all of these huge
alumni to support us and Burr
Gymnasium will be packed
every night and we can make
an impact. I’m excited. The
future is very bright and it’s
going to be very bright for
those players and coaches
who are able to turn around a
sleeping giant such as Howard
University.
AFRO: Coach, we all
know that Howard is a
national name. People come
from miles around just to
attend the homecomings
and be around the facility.
When you finally do get this
program turned around, how
huge would the impact be on
the area?
Nickelberry: I think it
would be unbelievable. I’m
old enough to remember
Larry Spriggs and (James)
Ratliff and when [Burr
Gymnasium] was sold out
and every Saturday and every
weekend was an unbelievable
weekend. I remember those
days. I remember when it was
packed in Burr and it was an
unbelievable atmosphere and
we were front page on the
Washington Post and people
talked about how good it was.
Media and the Internet are
more prevalent today, so it’s
going to be even [bigger than
what it used to be].

debuts this week tied at No. 10.
The football weekend gets started on Thursday night
again this week as Alcorn State hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff at
Jack Spinks Stadium on ESPNU.
