Grade Level 11 Quarter 3rd

Semester 2nd Region IV-A CALABARZON

Learning Area Statistics and Probability Teaching Dates November 7, 2018

1. Illustrate a random variable.

I. OBJECTIVES 2. Classify random variable as discrete or continuous.
3. Find the possible values of a random variable.
A. Content Standards The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of random
variables and probability distributions.
B. Performance Standards The learner is able to apply an appropriate random variable for a given
real-life problem (such as in decision making and games of chance).
C. Learning Competencies/ (M11/12SP-IIIa-1) - illustrates a random variable (discrete and
Objectives continuous).
(Write the LC code for each) (M11/12SP-IIIa-2) - distinguishes between a discrete and a
continuous random variable.
M11/12SP-IIIa-3 - finds the possible values of a random variable.

IV. PROCEDURE
A. Reviewing previous Lesson
or presenting new lesson What do you call to the set of all possible outcome in an experiment?
(ELICIT)
B. Establishing a purpose for Entry Card
the lesson (ENGAGE)
List the sample space of the following experiments

1. Tossing a coin
2. Pressing the light switch on
3. Rolling a die and tossing a coin simultaneously

C. Presenting examples/ If three coins are tossed, what numbers can be assigned for the frequency of
instances of the new lesson. heads that will occur? If three cards are drawn from a deck, what number
(ENGAGE) can be assigned for the frequency of face cards that will occur? The answer
to these questions require an understanding of random variables.

D. Discussing new concepts and

practicing new skills. #1 Tossing three coins
(EXPLORE)
Let H represent the Head and T represent the tail. If we let X be the
random variable representing the number of head, show the value of
the random variable X?

Place your answer in a table

Possible Outcomes Value of the Random Variable X
(number of head)
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8

Observe the outcome of the experiment. Record all unique outcome

and present it to the class.

E. Developing Mastery Solutions.

(Lead to Formative Assessment 3) 1. Determine the sample space. Let H represent head and T represent
(EXPLAIN) tail.

The sample space for this experiment is:

S = {TTT, TTH, THT, HTT, HHT, HTH, THH, HHH}

2. Count the number of heads in each outcome in the sample space and
assign this number to this outcome.

Possible Outcomes Value of the Random Variable X

(number of head)
TTT 0
TTH 1
THT 1
HTT 1
HHT 2
HTH 2
THH 2
HHH 3

So, the possible values of the random variable X are 0, 1, 2, and 3

F. Finding practical application The major application of random variable is to the decision making, and it is
of concepts and skills in daily an important aspect in business, education, insurance, and another real-life
living (ELABORATE) situation. Many decisions are made by assigning probabilities to all possible
outcomes pertaining to the situation and then evaluating the results.

G. Making Generalizations and A random variable can be discrete or continuous.

Abstraction about the
Lesson. (ELABORATE) A discrete random variable is a variable where the set of possible outcomes is
countable.

A continuous random variable is a variable where the set of possible

outcomes is on continuous scale such as height, weight and temperature.

Example:
1. The number of customer/s in a restaurant
2. The number of books in our library
3. The number of bottled water sold in our school canteen
4. The temperature reading during lunch time
5. The sound level of our sound system (maleta)
6. The number of copies produce by the printer in the office
H. Evaluating Learning A shipment of five computers contains two slightly defective. If a retailer
(EVALUATE) receives three of these computers at random, list the elements of the sample
space S using the letters D and N for defective and non-defective computers,
respectively. To each sample point assign a value x of the random variable X
representing the number of computer purchased by the retailer which are
slightly defective

Possible Outcome Value of the random variable X

I. Additional Activities for Classify the following random variable as discrete or continuous?
Application or Remediation
(EXTEND) a. The number of defective computers produced by manufacturer
b. The weight of newborns each year in a hospital
c. The number of siblings in a family or region
d. The amount of paint utilized in a building project

See page 8 (Statistics and Probability by Belecina, Baccay and Mateo) for
